Wales Squash and Racketball Vision
Excellent Coaching Every Time for Everyone – The vision for coaching in Wales. In line with the vision of Excellent Coaching Every Time for Everyone, the following Framework contains four headline objectives that by March 2018 we will have: • more appropriately qualified and skilled coaches • a more diverse workforce • a culture of self-improvement • a better-supported workforce Contributing to sustained and increased participation and improved performances in sport. To achieve this vision it is important that individuals from underrepresented groups in our community are supported when it comes to engagement in sport. A successful coaching system will have inclusive and equitable processes overtly within.

Eight Components
Through eight components the UK Coaching Framework guides the development of
coaching across Wales.
Every component plays a vital part in the development of an excellent coaching
system and there are clear interdependencies across all of the components. A coaching
system that is excellent is one where all eight components are fully addressed and
where the areas interact in a coherent way. These should not be seen as prescriptive or
restrictive, but as a reference point that can be used to meet the needs of partners.
These components which have been refined as a result of experience and feedback are
outlined below:
1. Participant Modeling
2. Coach Modeling
3. Coaching Strategy
4. Workforce Planning
5. Workforce Management
6. Coach Education and Development
7. Profile and Recognition
8. Research

Participant Modeling
Set out and implement a clear, comprehensive and inclusive model for the long-
term development of sports participants
It is important to identify the areas where squash is played. This information will allow for the targeting of coaches where required.
The diagram below outlines all aspects of squash from casual playing as a lifestyle choice through to the highest elite level.
Within this framework it is possible to create pathways for participants and thus coaching pathways to support their development.

Coach Modeling
To deliver excellent coaching practice to children, players and athletes at all stages of their development, you need to understand who is participating and why.
Using this model, it is possible to identify the levels and numbers of coaches needed at each stage of the pathway The performance pathway can be broken down into 3 main areas:
World class programme - 8 Coaches - High Performance
High performance - 8 Coaches
Talent identification – 45 club, APC and Talent ID squads
Community, grass roots and schools participation
U11 Talent ID Squads

WSRB Regional Community Development Officers (RDOs)
Objective of increasing the number of squash coaches in Wales by employing a number of RDOs to work within clubs with junior sections, provide informal CPD opportunities to existing coaches and recruit new coaches to leave a legacy within each club. RDOs have been employed and given the remit to each work with 5 Clubs (1 focus club and 4 Satellite clubs). See appendix 1 for breakdown. Main objectives for the project for 2014/2018 are:
Increase the number of Wales Squash and Racketball qualified Leader coaches.
Support the growing number of UKCC qualified coaches at all levels
Recognise the need for and facilitate Leaders courses through the medium of Welsh Each RDO will endeavour to:
Provide one coach mentoring workshop per month (through the medium of Welsh on request)
Recruit one female squash coach per club.
Provide high level coaching within clubs in the first instance, if required Set out and implement inclusive squash specific coaching strategies at national regional and local level National
Shadow Mentoring at National Squads Regional
Shadow Mentoring at Excellence squads and 11 & Under Talent ID squads Local
Schools programme – continual deployment of coaches into schools for fun taster sessions with exit routes into junior sections based in Leisure centres/health clubs, other community facilities and Squash Clubs.
Junior clubs
Club Charter
The Wales Squash and Racketball Club Charter is integral to the Coaching Action Plan. Clubs working towards the Charter will need to achieve the following minimum coaching requirements:
Bronze – A club must have a minimum of one Wales Squash and Racketball Level 2 licensed coach and all coaches must be registered. Coaches must attend a Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop, complete a Personal Disclosure form, Code of Conduct & Code of Ethics and undergo an enhanced CRB check. Silver – As bronze, plus must have a minimum of two Level 1 registered coaches, two licensed Level 2 coaches and one female registered coach. All Wales Squash and Racketball licensed coaches working at the club must attend UKCC coach reorientation.
WALES SQUASH AND RACKETBALL COACHING PLAN
Wales Squash and Racketball Coaching Plan – May 2016 Page 10
Gold – As silver, plus must have three Level 1 registered coaches, three licensed Level 2 coaches and one licensed Level 3 coach. In addition there must be one registered and one licensed female coach. RDOs will work with the clubs to achieve charter status, ensuring that the relevant level coaches are deployed.
Coach Needs Analysis – Target Numbers
These targets have been developed after analysing the present numbers and target levels for the squad structure and club charter status.
In addition we need to maintain a healthy input of candidates into the leaders award as this is the main pool from which UKCC candidate coaches will emerge.
Coaches at Level 2 and above are also needed as Regional Development Officers and Community Coach Activators. From these it will be possible to identify the shortfalls in suitably qualified coaches and formulate an ongoing strategy to meet the targets.
Focus Maintain a constant stream of coaches at entry level (Leaders award). Current strategies for this include
student bursaries to help assist those in further education
promote courses in primary schools alongside the schools participation programme
WALES SQUASH AND RACKETBALL COACHING PLAN
Wales Squash and Racketball Coaching Plan – May 2016 Page 11
encourage elite players to assist with coaching as part of their development
Identify potential new higher level coaches and help with funding and support to ensure they can progress through UKCC levels. Methods of funding include:
Community Chest Grants
Development Grants
Bursary
Private sponsorship
Frontline Coaching
Recruit (using RDOs) and retain qualified coaches in each of the three regions of Wales, with the skills to coach inclusively at each phase of the participant pathway.
Current Coach Education Figures
UKCC coaching figures are healthy, especially in the South and West. A focus on recruiting more candidates at UKCC Level 1 and Level 2 in the North is now a priority.
Leaders and Teachers – the course has been revised and updated and although numbers have not hit the targets for the last two years, it is anticipated that the schools programme and new initiatives for 6th form/university students will provide a large pool of potential point-of-entry candidates.

The Leaders targets have been increased in light of several factors.
UKCC courses have now been delivered in Wales for 5 years and a new generation of coaches are out in the regions delivering coaching to all ages and abilities. In order to retain these coaches and further develop their coaching skills attention should now be focussed on CPD and coach mentoring and continued deployment.
The initial transfer of coaches from the former Squash Wales qualifications to UKCC is virtually complete for existing active coaches so most candidates are now new to coaching squash.
The much greater cost of the UKCC courses (as opposed to SQW Welsh courses) has meant that funding is essential. Clubs are actively encouraged to apply for grants and bursaries (assisted by the RDOs) as part of their chartership, however applying for and receiving of them takes time and this often means that candidates delay going on courses.
WALES SQUASH AND RACKETBALL COACHING PLAN
Wales Squash and Racketball Coaching Plan – May 2016 Page 12
Careful monitoring and standardising of tutors/assessors is needed to maintain standards and address any issues arising from modifications to the courses – UKCC’s transfer to the QCF will mean reorientation for all L1 and 2 tutors
There has been a UKCC level 4 pilot course delivered with 1 Learner .
Wales Squash and Racketball is introducing a pilot racketball programme see appendix 2 – in the first instance existing UKCC coaches will be upskilled. However once established there may be an opportunity to run racketball coaching courses.
Additional areas of work to increase coaches
Under Represented Groups
We need to do a survey of current ethnic groups participating within the current Club framework and collect information on origin of membership. The last 12 months has seen several candidates from minority groups taking up places on courses. Consideration should be given to those who speak Welsh as a first language, the ability to deliver courses in Welsh is an important goal – Wales Squash and Racketball can deliver Leaders courses in Welsh. Disabled players/coaches also need to be recognised and an inclusive policy developed.
Women and Girls Each Community Coach is tasked with encouraging the recruitment of at least one female coach per club. This will result in additional female coaches.
Student Education Student Bursaries to be used for Leaders Award and UKCC Level 1 coaching courses as part the RDOs remit (see appendix 1) – students sign up to 10 hours voluntary junior section coaching at a local club.
Maximise the role of coaching in the education sector using the Wales Squash and Racketball Leaders Award Programme as an introduction.
Schools
With the success of Wales Squash and Racketball “Schools Mini Squash Programme” more teachers/educators are being made aware of the courses available – the use of Mini Squash as a learning tool should encourage schools to enrol staff on courses. Sixth form: students may be able to use the Leaders course as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate.
WALES SQUASH AND RACKETBALL COACHING PLAN
Wales Squash and Racketball Coaching Plan – May 2016 Page 13
Further Education
As previously mentioned, Student Bursaries are being used to finance students who wish to participate in Leaders Award courses. In addition it is hoped to establish direct links with faculties within further education establishments to actively promote the courses. The ability to tutor courses in Welsh will make them a very attractive proposition for many colleges – we now have available a Leaders course delivered completely through the medium of Welsh.
Support for Coaches
Establish accessible and effective education, delivery systems and resources to underpin the long-term development of coaches and the coach education workforce in the context of the UK Coaching Certificate and effective CPD programmes, using these as an incentive to increase the number of licensed coaches.
Coach Education Administrator The creation of this post has meant that there is now a strong concentrated focus on coaching and coach education within squash in Wales. Recruitment and retention of good quality coaches is a key part of the role and quality resources and CPD are crucial to retaining these coaches.
CPD Over the last 4 years many coaches have qualified/re-qualified as UKCC coaches. The focus is now moving to supporting these existing coaches with relevant CPD opportunities and mentoring support (see appendix 3) as well as maintaining a healthy stream of new coaches into the system.
Workforce To deliver the increased number of coach education courses a network of tutors and assessors are needed. The following chart indicates the number required:

Tutors and assessors need regular CPD in order to maintain standardisation across the courses. This will include feedback sessions with CES and other tutors, shadow mentoring and regular refresher courses.
To meet the needs of all potential coach candidates in Wales, the facility to deliver courses through the medium of Welsh is deemed to be important, although in the short term producing bi-lingual candidate packs for UKCC courses is not feasible. However Leaders Courses delivered in Welsh can be offered.
Coach Registration and License
Coach registration is available to all coaches and Wales Squash and Racketball actively encourages coaches to maintain registration with a useful benefits package including insurance. A successful DBS check is no longer a pre-requisite to achieving a UKCC coaching qualification. However as part of the registration system all coaches are DBS checked, insured and receive regular updates on courses available.
Only registered/licensed coaches are promoted through Wales Squash and Racketball and clubs are encouraged to insist on their coaches being registered/licensed. From September 2010 Wales Squash and Racketball aims to utilise only coaches who are licensed in their coaching programmes. Information about licensed coaches will be displayed in their associated clubs

Establish appropriate systems to identify, train, qualify and support quality coaches for specific sport populations (eg high performance athletes, talent identified athletes, children). As part of their role, Regional Development Officers will be responsible for recruiting new coaches.
Once qualified, coaches are mentored and encouraged to progress through the levels or expand their knowledge in areas of particular interest, such as coaching of disabled players or grassroots development. If registered they will be fully supported by Wales Squash and Racketball.
In the future a special area of the website will be dedicated to coaches, coach education and coach support. This will include links to resource information and guides to possible funding as well as up to date bulletins on courses along with useful contacts.
CPD will continue with regular mentoring – an audit of the current coach force will identify any areas that need to be addressed, regular monitoring of satellite qualifications (safeguarding, first aid) will ensure a professional and up to date workforce.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Implement an ongoing research and development programme into participant and coach pathways, coaching quality and expertise and coaching resources in line with the UK Coaching Framework priorities. The creation of a Coach Education Officer has given a focus to Coach Education in Wales. SQW short, mid and long term strategies to raise the standards of coaching through education and CPD will be established and implemented. The Coaching Plan is central to this and will be constantly reviewed and updated. Squash as both a lifestyle choice and a performance sport needs coaches – in turn the coaches need support. Qualifications, CPD and resources are constantly evolving and the NGB is committed to producing and delivering up to date programmes in each of these areas. The current audit of coaches/clubs will provide data for analysis and help establish an accurate picture of coaching and where new areas need to be developed. Steps have been taken to accommodate those whose first language is Welsh. More publications are to be made bilingual and courses tutored through the medium of Welsh, starting with the Leaders course. The first Leaders course was delivered in 2009.This proved to be successful, consideration will now be given to taking minisquash into the many Welsh primary schools throughout the country.
