Brief Report of International Day of Yoga-2017 activities at
SDUAHER, Kolar
I. Conference – A day Long conference

Theme: ‘Need for Integration of Yoga in Health Care’
Date: 28th June 2017 Time: 8-30 AM to 4-30 PM
Venue: Silver Jubilee Auditorium, Kolar, Karnataka.

Yoga received International recognition at the 69th United Nations General
Assembly declaring 21st June as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) in 2015. Since then
IDY was celebrated by Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research
Kolar (SDUAHER) every year. To mark the 3rd International Day of Yoga, a conference
on ‘Need for Integration of Yoga in Health Care’ was organized jointly by Department
of Integrative Medicine, SDUAHER and Department of General Medicine, Sri Devaraj
Urs Medical College (SDUMC) Kolar on 28th June 2017 at the University Auditorium,
SDUAHER, Kolar, Karnataka, INDIA.
Yoga is being practiced by the human diaspora since time immemorial in its
diverse hues and forms. Contemporary scientific literatures are replete with evidences
to evince the role of yoga on the wholesome benefits on human mind and body.
As the plethora of evidence based studies are staggering to unravel the
unequivocal benefits of yoga in either alleviating certain illnesses or as an adjunct
therapeutic modality for chronic diseases, we consider that it is the time to delve into
this ever emerging issue and take a leadership role in spreading awareness.

Accordingly, we had organized a daylong conference on 28th June 2017 with the
theme “NEED FOR INTEGRATION OF YOGA IN HEALTH CARE” where
distinguished experts from relevant academic fields deliberated on the intricate
relationship between Yoga and modern system of medicine in the context of health care
of the current era.
Chief Guest Dr.B.N.Gangadhar, Director NIMHANS, Bengaluru, Karnataka
inaugurated the conference by watering Tulasi Plant. The same was attended by
Dr.C.V.Raghuveer, Vice Chancellor, SDUAHER, Dr.A.V.M.Kutty, Registrar,
SDUAHER, Dr.Mohan Kumar.K., Med. Supt. & Medical Director, RLJH & RC,
Dr.M.L.Harendra Kumar, Dean Faculty of Medicine & Principal, SDUMC,
Dr. Prabhakar.K, Prof. and Head, Department of General Medicine and Dr.Nitin J.Patil,
Program Coordinator, and I/C Dept. of Integrative Medicine, students, staff from
nearby medical, nursing and allied health sciences colleges, delegates from all over
India attended the function.
Dr.Prabhakar.K,. Prof. and Head Department of General Medicine, Sri Devaraj
Urs Medical College, Kolar in his welcome speech briefed the need for integration of in
health care and the role of Yoga in managing newly emerged non-communicable
diseases (such as diabetes, stress & hypertension, CAD, obesity etc) and yoga is need
of the hour. Dr. Nitin Patil presented the report on various activities [Competition -
Essay, poster, Guest Talk – Dr.Hiranya Gowda, Yoga Rally, Mass Yoga,] conducted by
the University to celebrate the International Day of Yoga-2017. Dr.Anantha
Bhattacharya, Dept. of Community Medicine introduced the chief guest
Dr.B.N.Gangadhar.
Dr. B.N.Gangadhar, Director NIMHANS, Bengaluru explained on topic ‘Need
for Integration of Yoga in Health Care’ He said, the important role of Sudharshana
Kriya in managing various diseases. He said that India records highest rate of heart
diseases which is the leading cause of mortality. Unhealthy lifestyle, urbanization,

globalization, processed food and lack of health education are responsible for the same.
He emphasized the need to inculcate Yogic lifestyle. He presented recent advancement
in the field of Yoga and Mental Health.
During the inaugural session, Dr. Nitin Patil, Programme Coordinator, and I/c
Dept. of Integrative Medicine spoke on “Yoga in Health Care”. He said Yoga has
emerged as one of the evidence based Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(CAM- bringing conventional and complementary approaches together in a
coordinated way), a multidimensional, holistic approach, proved beneficial in both
prevention and treating many chronic ailments. National institute of health (NIH) of
United States has initiated National Centre for Complementary and Integrative
Medicine (NCCIM) to work towards the same.
Dr.Prabha Adhikari, Professor and Head, Dept .of Medicine, Yenepoya, Medical
College, Mangalore, spoke on topic ‘Yoga in Geriatric Practice – Lesson learn from my
experiments’ in her speech she expressed the therapeutic importance of yoga in treating
geriatric patients, age related disorders like depression, anxiety, insomnia and fear.
Advantages of various group activities and yoga in elderly people, effect of yoga
diaphragmatic breathing, diet rich in vitamin C on oxidative stress. Presented the
research outcome of yoga and diaphragmatic breathing which improves glycemic
parameter, BMI and quality of life. In the recent past many older adults are turning to
complementary and integrative health approaches, often as a reflection of a healthy
self-empowered approach to well-being. 75% of US adults have used some form of
complementary or alternative medicine (CAM).
Dr.Sreeranjani Jaideep, Clinical Registrar, M.S.Ramaiah Indic Center for
Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine spoke about Integration of Ayurveda in healthcare
and quoted few of her research work in the field of Ayurveda and Conventional
Medicine and reiterated integrative medicine is the need of hour.

In the afternoon session, Dr.Prabhakar K,. Professor and Head, Dept., of General
Medicine, briefed about ‘Yogic management of Non communicable Disease’ and shared
his personal experience of integrating Yoga in clinical practices.
In last session, Dr.K.N.V.Prasad, Prof and HOD of Pediatrics, SDUMC, Kolar,
Karnataka, spoke on “Integration of Yoga in Child Health”. He briefed on origin and
evolution of Yoga. Adopting Yoga in schools and its benefits on children’s, also
demonstrated benefits in school going kids such as stress, anxiety, depression. Both
short term and long-term studies have confirmed the useful role of yoga in adolescents.
And spoke about Yoga should be implemented to prevent diseases instead of treating.
Also said consideration factors to choose yoga class for kids.
A Panel discussion was conducted on theme of the conference under the
chairmanship of Dr.V.Lakshamaiah, Prof. of Medicine while addressing to the audience
questions, Dr.V.Lakshamaiah., emphasized about need of incorporating Yoga in
Diabetic care as complimentary therapy. Dr.Prabhakar.K. said that India has high
prevalence of type 2 diabetics in the world and is the leading cause of death and
disability. Holistic approach is the need of hour for better management of Type 2
Diabetes Mellitus. Dr.S.R.Prasad, Director, PG Studies, SDUMC, Kolar, while
answering to the questions of audience, described about Yoga as way of life which
brings the positive lifestyle changes. He also said that Yoga is inexpensive, feasible
therapy which can be accommodated in the present conventional medicine. Dr.Nitin
Patil recalled SAMANVAYA–2013 conference, India has a potential to become global
leader in evidence based integrative medicine, as it already has both established
AYSUH systems of medicine and conventional medicine and emphasized the ample of
opportunity in A-AYUSH (Integrative Medicine) research as it’s a gray area need to be
explored.
Dr.Sreenivas.S.V., Associate Prof. of Medicine presented vote of thanks and the
conference ended with Shanti Mantra.
