Restaurants are selected based on where we are at meal time. We try to find a place with a good reputation or interesting history or décor. On some trips why can’t we order from the full menu? There are two primary reasons some trips include a buffet or limited menu. The first is when the schedule is tight and there isn’t enough time for a large group to be served from the full menu. The second is when the restaurant cannot accommodate a bus at meal time unless the menu is limited, or they have a buffet. On rare occasions when it isn’t possible to arrange a restaurant meal, a boxed lunch is served. What if I want to exceed the per person food allowance? When ordering from the full menu, you can have whatever you want. If your tab exceeds the food allowance, pay the trip leader the difference plus 25% for tax and tip. This is an individual or per couple transaction. It does not mean surveying the table to see if others have a remaining food allowance and deciding to use it for yourself. No kidding, this has happened! What if I want an alcoholic beverage? Skoal! The wait staff should write drink orders separately from the combined SSLL food order. Membership and Waiver Form (Also available on the SSLL Web site - Membership tab.) You can renew your 2018 membership at any time using the attached Membership and Waiver form. If you have already joined or renewed for 2018, you do not have to submit new forms. This is a new form that combines the Membership and Liability Waiver paperwork. These two events occur simultaneously once a year, so it makes sense to include them on the same form. Each member must submit a separate Membership and Liability Waiver. Registration Form (Also available on the SSLL Web site – Courses and Trips tab.) This must be completed for all class and trip registrations and payments. To facilitate computer entry, registrations with complete paperwork are processed first.

SSLL January 2018 Newsletter

Happy New Year! After a couple weeks off, SSLL life is returning to normal. With all the cold of winter it’s nice to think ahead to warm weather trips and classes.

Deadline

Calling all theatre lovers: The deadline for the Shaw Festival registration is FEBRUARY 2nd. The $210 per person deposit must be received by SSLL by then, because tickets must be ordered on February 2nd to assure availability.

Montreal: Final payment due March 1st, 2018 Lion King: Full with a waiting list. Alaska 2019: 60% Full Ark Encounter 2019: Please let us know if you are interested in this trip. Nepal 2019: Please let us know if you are interested in this wonderful opportunity. See attached flyer .

We hear you! Office volunteers summarized the 2017 class and trip evaluations. This section of the newsletter will be used to answer questions and explain why decisions are made. This month’s topic concerns meals and restaurants.

How are restaurants selected?

Please pay your tab early so the bus can leave on time.

SSLL is adopting calendar year accounting, so membership will run from January 1st through December 31st, 2018. We have revised the paperwork for membership and registration. New forms are included with this newsletter. If you need printed copies, call the office and leave a message. We will mail them to you.

This trip is designed for older participants with a limited amount of walking. You will travel throughout the country on first class buses, stay at quality hotels, see amazing temples and cultures, as well as wild jungle animals and amazing snow-capped mountains. Why January? Deposit of $210 Due by Feb 2, 2018

Grand Hotel: Check into the lavish Grand Hotel, where the lives of ten hotel guests collide over one unforgettable night. Love. Betrayal. Jealousy. Murder. And the glamour of Berlin in the Roaring Twenties. Soaring with songs and dance, it’s the mesmerizing musical about what happens when our deepest,

most desperate passions are unleashed. Winner of five Tony Awards.

O’Flaherty V.C.: Young Dennis O’Flaherty has been sent back from the front to recruit more Irishmen to the war. The only problem? He neglected to tell his Irish Nationalist mother he’s fighting for the English. Packed with family feuding and witty repartee, this Bernard Shaw one-act skewers every illusion about why we fight.

The Hound of the Baskerville: It’s the return of the murder mystery to The Shaw. Sir Baskerville has been scared to death — literally. Now deductive genius Sherlock Holmes is on the case to find the murderer … with twist after twist to keep you guessing. Darkly fun, deliciously sly, and just the right amount of suspense: this is a whodunit you won’t want to miss.

Henry V: A troop of Canadian soldiers is hunkered down in a dugout during WWI with some copies of Shakespeare’s Henry V for company. As they enter the death-haunted, morally ambiguous world of the play, the play enters theirs. This imaginative spin on Shakespeare is a powerful exploration of what it means — and costs — to fight for king and country.
