2s 2nd Hand Uniform Donation

Families of Year 12 students might consider donating uniform to the second hand shop now that it is no longer required. Obviously many

families will have younger students to hand uniform items down to, but if not, money raised through the sale of uniform supports the

work of chaplaincy at the school and supports students in need. We urgently need dresses, skirts, jumpers and spray jackets for the

shop. If you have any items for donation they can be left in a box in the Year 12 Common Room or left at the General Office.

SECOND HAND TEXT BOOK SALE:

The Second Hand Textbook Sale will be held on Friday 6 December from 8am to 11am and 4pm to 5pm in Melba

– there is no credit card facilities.

Please see your Compass News for the Second Hand Text Book list which provides information for Sellers & Buyers and

Year 7 to 9 – Monday 2 December or Tuesday 3 December between 9am and 3pm

** A “SELLERS SHEET” (see Compass News) MUST ACCOMPANY ANY BOOKS SUBMITTED FOR SALE **

Whole School Assembly

On Tuesday of this week, we had our final Whole School Assembly for the year. Thank you to Curt

Webb and Edwin Cornish, who did the compering and to David Woods who also volunteered to assist.

Emily Preston did a fine job of leading us in the National Anthem and Sam Davies performed the Last

Post and the Reveille with distinction. The theme of the assembly was Remembrance Day. Yester-

day, we had services in our Houses and participated in the local Blackburn RSL Service which is why

we held the whole school assembly on Tuesday. Thank you to Blackburn RSL for their assistance with

our House assemblies.

We also celebrated more great achievements of some of our students – congratulations to Yvette Har-

ris who was awarded Best Speaker in the Annual Parliamentary Debate against Mullauna College earli-

er in the year which was organised by Dee Ryall, our local member and former student.

Congratulations also to Kim Luu of Year 8 and Nicole To of Year 7 who received Distinction Certificates

for the University of New South Wales Mathematics Competition. The music and mathematics talents

of some of our students were also recognised with Michael Lo, Darren Lee and Allan Pennings receiv-

ing their prizes for the winning Maths Rap which was part of the Numeracy Week celebrations.

EYE WATCH NEWS The number one place for Hollows News

Congratulations Hollows Readers Well done to Hollows House who won the Gold Medal in the annual Reading Olympics which was a Mentor

Group reading competition organised by the library staff. Also congratulations to H3 who read the most

pages over the 3 days. Thanks to Ms Weber and Jo Henry for the lovely framed certificate which we will

display.

Around the mentors A reminder that Year 10 and 11 students will be continu-

ing exams next week. They are only required at school

during exam times but must wear full school uniform.

Our Year 7-9 students will undertake mentor groups as

usual.

From November 25 all students will be undertaking our

‘step up’ program where students will start their classes

for next year.

Hollows House held a Remembrance Day service on Monday which was extremely moving and thought

provoking. A highlight was the visit from Jim Marshall of the Blackburn RSL who was accompanied by two

veterans -one from the Vietnam war and one from the Afghanistan conflict. Thanks to Jim Marshall of

Blackburn RSL for organising the veterans to attend and for helping us to understand the importance of

the day. Thanks goes to Cahill Ross who played the ‘last post’ on trumpet and to Abbey Foulcher and Ellie

Parratt who sang the anthem. Thanks also to Holly McCarthy, Lucy Fist, Sam Burns, Nick White and Zac

Coleman Bock for being involved in the service. The students did the House and school proud with their

contributions.

Camp Reminders

Central Australia Tour A tour of Central Australia will be offered to students in Years 10-11 in 2014. The camp will oc-

cur during the last week of term 2. It will be a 8-day

Highlights of the Red Centre tour and cost $1400. The tour will include famous places in Central Australia such

as Kata Tjuta (Olgas), Uluru, Alice Springs, Kings Can-yon and MacDonnell Ranges. Students will fly in and out of Alice Springs to avoid a lengthy bus tour.

This tour is only offered every second year so if you are

interested then I suggest you take up the opportunity. See your House Secretary to pick up an information sheet.

The cost will be $1,400.

A $200 deposit is required to confirm a place by Wednesday, 27th November. A minimum of 35 students need to be interested (and deposits paid) for this tour to proceed

Year 8 Camp 2014 There has been some concern that not all students would have the opportunity to attend a resi-dential camp at Year 8 in 2014. Due to this concern arrangements for Year 8 camp have been

changed so that ALL students have the opportunity to attend camp.

To accommodate the whole year level 2 x 3-day will be offered at the Philip Island Adventure Re-sort in the week beginning 12 May 2014. One group will be away Mon-Wed and the other Wed-Fri. Costs and payments will be made in 2014 although a $50 deposit for camp will be included with

school fees for 2014.

Full arrangements for the camp will be published later this year.

The Reading Olympics – an annual reading event

All students recently took part in a mentor group activity called The Reading Olympics. The activity is designed to highlight the importance of reading every

day, and the place that reading has in our daily lives.

We aimed at having everyone read for one hour, so three twenty minute mentor sessions were devoted to the activity. The silence around the school was notable as students and teachers became absorbed in their books and enjoyed the

unique opportunity to lose themselves in a good story.

To give the activity a competitive edge, a gold, silver or bronze medal was on offer to the House that could read the most pages of their books. Results were recorded by mentor teachers and passed on to me to do the final count.

Congratulations to Hollows House for winning the gold medal in The Reading

Olympics for 2013. The excitement on Ms Purcell’s face is obvious at she holds up the prize at House assembly. Hollows students read a massive 4671 pages.

Melba House won the silver medal by reading an amazing 3678 pages. Many thanks to Betty for accepting the award on behalf of her mentor group. This was closely followed by Freeman House who read 2536 pages. Well done to everyone

that took part in the activity.

Remembrance Day Service

Student leaders from all houses attended the Blackburn RSL Remembrance Day Ceremony on Mon-

day, 11th November. Along with representatives from federal and state government and local primary

schools, the students laid a wreath and Remembrance poppies at the memorial in Morton Park in

Blackburn. Following the ceremony the students enjoyed refreshments at the RSL Club Rooms where

they had an opportunity to meet and chat with members.

The students did a wonderful job representing Blackburn

High School and found the experience valuable.

Dear Parents,

It has been decided that this year, for the first time, we will hold our Junior/Intermediate Ensembles Concert on-site at Blackburn High School, in the new Gymnasium/Performance Centre. Because of the new arrangements, it

would be appreciated if you could take a few moments to read this notice to ensure everyone is familiar with how the concert will proceed. The program order is overleaf to inform you when your son / daughter will be required.

Please come along and make it a great night for our marvellous musicians. Admission: $10 Per Adult

$5 Concessions – seniors and tertiary students Children under 18 no charge

This is our final major concert for the year. Our experience as parents of performers and staff tells us that getting organized is always challenging, trying to ensure that the family have something to eat and still get to the

concert on time. Performers in the first half of the concert should arrive no later than 6.45 pm. Performers who are in the second half of the concert should arrive by 7.15 pm, making the available time even more limited.

IMPORTANT NOTE In a change from what usually happens at concerts, please note that

Friends of Music will be selling sausages before the concert only, from 6.30 pm, and not during interval. Drinks and snacks only will be available at the interval, but no sausages at this stage. We hope this

will suit families attending and we will be able to enjoy some social mingling with other parents around the BBQ prior to the concert.

All money raised from this event will go towards the Music Chair replace-ment fund.

On arrival, all instrumentalists are to put their instrument case in the Music Block. If not required to remain in the Music Block at this time, students can then proceed either to the BBQ or to the Gymnasium. Performers are re-

quired to sit at the eastern end of the auditorium (closest to the Music Block) when they are watching the concert, and should move to the Music Block only when asked to by their ensemble director.

The Music Block will operate as our “backstage” area. It is important that only performers, music staff and Friends of Music helpers come into the Mu-

sic Block during the evening. Please assist staff in the smooth running of the concert by delivering your child to one of the doors of the music block.
