The ULSTEIN ABD approach accelerates the normal fl eet development and renewal process by improving the quality of the decision making process and reducing the time from business idea generation to fl eet investment realisation. The ULSTEIN ABD process includes, but is not necessarily limited to, a process by which the customer and an Ulstein team work interactively together in three sessions. These interactive workshops improve the quality of the business development process. Much complex information is effectively analysed and customer executives make their decisions interactively, assisted by the ULSTEIN ABD facilitator. The resulting report is a superior way of presenting relevant information to a Board of Directors, fi nancial institutions and/or investors. Information being produced helps the communication process internally in the company and among relevant suppliers.

The X-BOW®

The unique and proven characteristics of the X-BOW® offer signifi cantly higher transit speed in adverse weather conditions, as well as enhanced fuel economics. The bow shape ensures soft entry into waves, thus reducing speed loss, pitch- and heave accelerations, as well as eliminating slamming and vibration problems associated with conventional bow fl are.

The X-BOW® incorporates a forward superstructure and accommodation with superior noise and vibration levels. The forward superstructure in conjunction with reduced acceleration levels, greatly increases the cargo payload for the vessel and reduces the risk of loss or damage of cargo.

10

The X-BOW®

Page 11: SSV product catalogue Edition 2 - 2009 low res

What is it? – Principal Characteristics:– A novel hull shape, with a redistributed fore ship volume

and substantially reduced flare.– Raised fore ship, normally incorporating accommodation

and navigation bridge.– Patented internationally by Ulstein.

What does it offer?– Higher transit speed and reduced fuel consumption.– Reduced vessel movements and vibration, improving crew

comfort, cargo- and vessel safety.

Reduced wave resistance and air drag providing for:– Increased transit speed in heavy weather, and/or– Reduced fuel consumption

Reduced vessel movements providing for:– Improved work environment– Enhanced cargo safety

Negligible slamming providing for:– Reduced need for voluntary speed reduction– Reduced risk of hull damage and structural fatigue– Reduced whipping (higher order/multi- node hull vibrations)– Potentially reduced hull maintenance costs– Potentially prolonged usable vessel life

The X-BOW® is not more complex or time consuming to build, and our experience means a slightly reduced construction cost. The hull comprises moderately curved surfaces that are simple to construct, and the shell effect allows for reducing the steel weight.

The X-BOW® allows for reduced powering or higher transit speed or a combination of the two:

Typically for a given average transit speed, the X-BOW® allows for reduced powering, hence reduced fuel consumption in the range of 10-15 % over a year`s operation.

For a given powering, the X-BOW® provides for higher average transit speed, hence increased annual transport capacity in the range of 5-10%.

The operational character of the X-BOW® is unique compared to the multitude of alternative performance increasing measures, as it enables the operator to reap the benefit that yields the highest return at any given moment, given operational considerations and prevailing market conditions.

CONTAINER CARRIERS

The ULSTEIN EUROFEEDER is developed for fl exible work in regional and international shortsea container feeder trades, whilst also offering optional features, making the design uniquely adapted for specialized trades, i.e. reefer containers and high-and-heavy containers.

The holds are high-cube optimized, with allowance for wide body (Euro type) containers. The majority of holds accept reefer containers.

The deck arrangement allows for oversize containers (45 ft. and 49 ft.), with multiple rows also allowing for wide body containers.

The base vessel features a direct coupled slow speed, two stroke HFO engine. The vessel may optionally be fi tted with a diesel-electric propulsion system, which would particularly suit intermittent reefer trades, during which speed could be moderately compromised for a high reefer intake.

All vessel types can also be developed with a conventional bow solution.

DRY CARGO BOX-BULK CARRIERS

The ULSTEIN SPEEDLOADER is the future workhorse of coastal and regional shortsea vessels, characterised by signifi cant versatility and high productivity. The design features a single box hold that may be subdivided by one or two movable transverse bulkheads.

Vessel- and hold dimensions are carefully selected to allow the vessel to double as a container carrier as well as be well prepared for cargo owners varying transported lot sizes. The X-BOW® provides for an enlarged and protected area for deck cargoes and less speed loss in heavy weather.

Typical cargoes would be any bulk, break bulk, steel, aluminium, timber and project cargoes including high and heavy. The container fi tted variant would match the performance of pure container carriers, and exceed the performance of most smaller multi purpose carriers.

Cargo versatility would signifi cantly ensure unsurpassed revenue generating capability in the comparable size range.

All vessel types can also be developed with a conventional bow solution.

GENERAL DRY CARGO CARRIERS

The ULSTEIN FLEXILOADER is developed for fl exible work in international shortsea trades specialized on project cargo including high and heavy cargoes (wide and long). These vessels are characterised by high versatility and productivity, not least due to the unsurpassed enclosed cargo space when comparing with most multi purpose carriers.

The design features two large open box holds subdivided by intermediate movable decks and/or bulkheads, and optional aft ramp. The RORO variant would offer a continuous cargo deck through virtually the full vessel length. Hold- and vessel dimensions are carefully selected to allow the vessel to double as a container carrier or a specialised offshore supply vessel. Typical cargoes would be bulk, windmills, cable reels and project cargoes including high and heavy.

A unique feature of the vessel is the possibility to operate partially as open top, thus offering unique capabilities for oversize cargoes. All vessel types can also be developed with a conventional bow solution.

RORO CARRIERS

The ULSTEIN WAVEMASTER is developed for car carrier (PCTC) operations suitable for both shortsea and world wide operations. The basic family can be extended at both ends of the size range from small combination RORO carriers to heavy ROROs of 250 m in length.

The X-BOW® applied in all designs offers increased average transit speed in adverse weather conditions, ensuring better fuel economy, lower air pollution and decreased risk of damage of sensitive cargo.

Cargo areas in all standard designs of the family are subdivided and dimensioned according to the requirements of the leading European carriers. Internal RORO arrangements are based on the effi cient cascade system, served by a combination of movable and fi xed ramps. Cargo fl exibility is enhanced by a number of liftable decks and two heavy decks. Non standard arrangements, deck heights and loads can be provided as options.

All vessel types can also be developed with a conventional bow solution.

Ulstein Marine Services (UMS) is part of a larger initiative within Ulstein to expand services to become an integrated provider of a broad range of ship services, including design, engineering, construction and operation. UMS will create competitive advantages for customers by establishing a new performance model in the marine service industry. Ulstein believe that this model will change how the industry views ship management. UMS is focusing on the total value of the vessel, managing cost control, revenue growth and risk. Ulstein sees a ship as a floating business unit complete with its own on board management supported by a global network. This approach may challenge the traditional model of ship management, but Ulstein sees this as the right way forward.

Ulstein will restore the captain’s and the officers` role again. By empowering and training the captain and his officers to act like a business team, UMS removes a layer of management, enabling on board personnel the freedom to make better decisions, faster. Officers and crew will be subject to performance expectations and Key Performance Indicators.

Headquartered in Oslo, NorwayUMS is headquartered in Oslo with a crewing and operations centre in Manila, and five additional fleet support offices under establishment in Houston, Rio de Janeiro, Rotterdam, Dubai and Singapore. These offices will work with service chain management, coordinating purchasing, accounting operations, technical support and crewing. UMS will turn traditional ship management on its head. Our shore based offices support network will serve the ships, not vice versa.

Bringing it all togetherUMS will be linked by ULSTEIN KEY, a software system which enables a unique fleet wide overview and control of operations for critical and selected processes. ULSTEIN KEY, which is built on a Teomaki designed-platform, will also include risk management tools, track KPIs and enable improved performance management of ships.
