    Proposed gym extensionat the Romsey Recreation CentreCouncil is proposing to convert the existing squash courts at Romsey Recreation Centre into additional gym space.

    Residents and users of the centre are invited to complete a survey to determine the level of need for additional fi tness facilities and the impact of the proposal on current user groups.

    The survey is available online at mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay or in person at the Romsey Service Centre, Romsey Recreation Centre and Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre.

    The survey closes on Sunday 13 July 2014. Feedback received will be considered by Council at a Council meeting later this year and all participants notifi ed of the outcome.

    Police pursuit deathA man was killed when a car rolled over during a police pursuit in Macedon on Saturday morning. Police were called to the railway station around 5am following reports of an attempted theft. The suspects drove away but crashed on the corner of Blackwood and Forbes roads. A male occupant died at the scene. A 27-year-old Sunbury woman was arrested and sent to Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard. Two other males fled the scene and were later arrested. The Major Collision Investigation Group and Professional Standards Command are investigating.

    Budget survives stop motionA motion by east ward councillor Joe Morabito to overturn the adoption of Macedon Ranges councils 2014-15 budget was defeated at the councils meeting last week. Cr Morabito was not present at the meeting.

    Trivia fills important roleA Lancefield primary school trivia night attracted 170 people and raised $5000 for the schools literacy development program. And a Woodend kindergarten trivia night raised $7100 for a shade sail for the sandpit.

    An 80-year-old footbridge at Woodend railway station which has been described as a death trap by residents closed yesterday for $100,000 of urgent safety repairs.

    The wooden bridge connects the eastern car park, ticket office and platform one to the western car park and platform two.

    Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder announced the funding to Star Weekly on Friday.

    This iconic bridge has great sentimental value for locals and customers, but age and weather have taken their toll, Mr Mulder said.

    Works include replacing all timber stairs, adding new handrails, steel support brackets and bolts, replacing timber landings, applying anti-slip treatment to new stairs and landings, replacing rotten timber beams, and painting.

    Last July, Woodends Barry Mann slipped and dislocated his shoulder while walking down the stairs.

    Its a death trap on a frosty day its very slippery, the boards are unstable, too. Its dangerous, he said.

    Margaret Crowe, also of Woodend, slipped and fell on the bridge two weeks ago. She reported the fall to V/Line.

    Im concerned that less fit and able-bodied people, particularly elderly people, could have a really nasty fall, she said.

    V/Line chief executive Theo Taifalos said work on the bridge was critical to ensure the safety of customers and staff.

    Old infrastructure is part of the railway environment so Im always looking for safe solutions which keep the community happy.

    Labor candidate for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas said the condition of the footbridge

    had been raised countless times over the past six months.

    I am pleased to learn that some maintenance work has now been scheduled, but I wonder why weve had to wait so long for the work to commence.

    She said 150 people had signed a petition calling for the upgrade.

    Coaches are replacing trains during the July school holidays for work on the Regional Rail Link project.

    An alternative pedestrian crossing located at the northern end of the Woodend station platforms will be available while the bridge works are completed. The bridge is due to reopen on Saturday, July 12.

    Woodend Station pedestrian bridge Monday 30 June Friday 11 July

    Due to vital repair works, the pedestrian bridge at Woodend Station will be closed from Monday 30 June until Friday 11 July.

    Alternative access between platform one and platform two is available via the pedestrian crossing at the northern end of the station.

    Please allow an extra few minutes if you are walking from the western car park (near platform two) and follow the way-nding signage.
