Lord God, you showered heavenly gifts on the virgin Agatha. Hear the prayers of those who recall her devoted life and

who ask her to intercede for them in their necessity. Help us to imitate her virtue during our earthly life and en-

joy eternal happiness with her in heaven. Amen.

“Give ear, O Lord, to my “Give ear, O Lord, to my “Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my words, understand my words, understand my

cry: hearken to the voice cry: hearken to the voice cry: hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King of my prayer, O my King of my prayer, O my King

and my God.”and my God.”and my God.” --- Psalm v. 2,3Psalm v. 2,3Psalm v. 2,3

The question in today’s readings is a perennial one:

Whose prayer is heard? The short answer is ALL

prayer is heard. So, then comes the next question, “If

my prayer is heard, why don’t I get what I ask for?”

Good question! And possibilities are thrown out for

our meditation: While God hears everyone’s prayer,

some people (read rich) have their wealth and their

equally rich friends to lean on, but the lowly and poor

have only God...so while God is not partial to the

lowly, He realizes they only have Him, so He tends to

do things that make them see His closeness. He does

just as much for others, but they may not realize it.

The Gospel offers the possibility that there are times

in our lives when we are too “full of ourselves” to

have room for God--so it is the “empty of ego” who

feel heard. Paul says in so many words, “I just glorify

God and trust!” Our weekend meditation is on prayer

and being heard. All the readings are convinced

that God hears all prayer. They are also convinced

that we can let our “heads” get in the way. In Hebrew

there are three movements of prayer: first, the move-

ment outward to a neighbor in service to the Divine

that resides in there, second, the movement inward, to

know something of the mystery of myself so that I

might better see the “fingerprint” of God in me, and

third, the movement beyond this plane to speak with

God. Each one requires its own sort of humility.

That’s what our readings over the past few weeks

have hoped we’ll see. Let’s try to put the readings

into practice this week.

mana.

Page 3: St Agatha: Patron Saint of Breast Cancer · -Gladys Arellano -Glen Arellano -Elsa Perez “Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my words, understand my cry: hearken to the voice

dirigida hacia Dios y a Su Misericordia.

nuestras oraciones. Le pedimos a Santa Águeda

que continúe bendiciéndolos, guiándolos y sanán-

dolos.

Que tengan una semana bendita,

Hermana Karen

O ur readings today give us insights into

how God weighs our prayers; where are

our prayers coming from within us? Our

intentions, like the Pharisee, are not bad but

they tend to me centered on the Pharisee.

Prayer should be centered on God and His

mercy. We can ask ourselves where the line is

between self-acceptance, self-esteem, and self-

absorption in our prayers. Prayer calls us to

bow our heads humbly in recognition of who

we are and who God is.

As we come to the end of October, let us keep

all those who have suffered from breast cancer

in our prayers and their families. We ask St.

Agatha to continue to bless them, guide them

and heal them.

Have a blessed week,

Sr. Karen

No

Did you know that October is sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) awareness month. Every week one baby dies in Los Angeles County while sleeping. Do not bed share with your baby. Your baby should always sleep on his or her back for naps and at night. The back sleep position is the safest, with no increased risk of choking on vomit. Place your baby on a crib alone and do not use pillows, blankets, quilts, or other soft surfaces. Keep soft items away from baby’s face. Make sure anyone who takes care of your baby knows this.
