Veterans Day

Every year on November 11th, we celebrate Veterans Day. We thank God for those men and women who have served in our United States of America Armed Forces, especially those who have faced combat and war. Obviously, they have sacrificed a great deal in order for us to celebrate our freedom and we thank them for their strength and courage. We also pray for those who are presently serving our country that they may avoid violence and conflict.

Here is an inspiring prayer from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (U.S.C.C.B.) for those who have given their life to serve our country:

Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of all life and author of peace,

as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces. Give them courage, hope and strength.

May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing.

Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever. Amen.

2nd Collection for Victims of Natural Disasters A number of weeks ago we had a 2nd Collection for Catholic Charities USA to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Archdiocese of Chicago are now inviting us to support those affected by Hurricane Maria and the earthquakes in Mexico. We will have a 2nd Collection next weekend, November 11th & 12th, to offer assis-tance to those in need. Please be generous as your means allow. St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School News

There has been a great deal of exciting news coming from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Catholic School lately. Last weekend, our 6th Grade Girls Volleyball Team won the St. Joseph’s Fall Classic in dramatic fashion over St. Dennis in three sets. Congrats to our 6th Grade girls on bringing home the trophy!

On Friday, October 27th, our 8th Grade students offered a beautiful tribute to Catholic Saints. Each student dressed up to represent their chosen Confirmation Saint and posed beside their “stained glass window” creations. They also offered wonderful presentations of their chosen Saints to the students, teachers and guests.

Finally, last week Fr. Kurt Boras from St. Patrick Church, Mr. Robert Priest, our St. Als/St. Pats School Principal and I had a meeting with representa-tives from the Archdiocese of Chicago in regards to our school finances. Because of the generosity of parishioners, school parents and outside benefactors towards our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Celtic Fund, we can confidently plan for the upcom-ing 2018/19 School Year. We will still need to continue on with our successful fundraising, especially in supporting the Celtic Fund. The Celtic Fund is an ongo-ing account for charitable donations that will assist the school in its operations, tui-tion assistance and future development. If you would like to donate to the Celtic Fund, please contact St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School at (630) 783-2220.

Welcome Guests and Visitors . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liber-ating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s sav-ing presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing). Worship reverently enough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.”

The greatest among you must be your servant. -- Matthew 23:11

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Not My Problem Paul was not bragging when he talked about the toil and drudgery he endured while proclaiming the gospel. He makes a point of his working so as not to burden anyone. He worked to support himself, rather than asking the new Christians to support him--just the opposite of what the scribes and Pharisees were doing, according to the gospel. Jesus accused them of laying heavy burdens on people, without helping them to bear those bur-dens. So what kind of burdens did the Pharisees impose? The Pharisees and scribes were very familiar with the laws of their Jewish religion. Almost every detail of dai-ly life was covered by some law. And they could be very persuasive about strictly keeping those laws. Origi-nally those laws and regulations were meant to set the Hebrews apart from other peoples, to be a sign of holi-ness. For example, the Ten Commandments are based on loving God above all else (first three command-ments) and loving your neighbor (last seven.) But over the years, rabbis added more and more details to the laws, until it was almost impossible to keep them all straight. But what if someone needed help on a Sabbath? If you broke a Sabbath rule, even for a good reason, you could not go to the Pharisees to get an exemption. They would say, "Not my problem." Remember the times Jesus cured the sick on the Sabbath, and how they condemned him for working on the day of rest. Jesus, however, came to remind us that holiness is more important than scrupulosity. If we truly live the ideal of loving God with our whole being and loving our neighbor, we will find that love is much easier to bear than the fear of doing something wrong. Jesus also gave us his Holy Spirit to help guide us in the path of holiness. And through his death on the cross, Jesus gave us forgiveness if we do commit a sin. All we have to do is con-fess the sin to experience that forgiveness. So keeping the law of love is no problem. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

THE GREATEST AMONG US

Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great.

Like the Pharisees in today's Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps?

The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life

in service to the world. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

NO RE SESSIONS ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5 CONFIRMATION RITE OF ACCEPTANCE

FIRST RECONCILATION PARENT MEETING

FAMILY SESSIONS We have nearly completed our Fall Family Sessions on the “Domestic Church” with our 1st - 5th Graders. We only have the Wednesday 1st - 2nd Grade group on November 8th. Using our theme for this year, Liv-ing As Disciples, we looked at the role of our homes, as domestic churches, in being the first place where our children hear about God, and where our faith in Jesus is lived out... as disciples. Each of us should ask our-selves, where are we now as a domestic church in living out our faith, and how can we continue to grow in our family faith? A great resource is the Formed.org website. All parishioners have a free subscription to this “Netflix for Catholics”. Just go to the site, and register using your email address and the Parish Code: CFMQWD (all CAPS). Having recently celebrated All Saints Day, your family might enjoy the many movies and documen-taries and audio programs on the lives of the saints, including…

Sunday Nov. 12th 9:00 - RE Wednesday Class 11:00 - RE Sunday Class & School Having completed their interviews, our 8th Grade candidates will declare their desire to enter into this final year of preparation, and the parish com-munity accepts, welcomes, and prays over them.

Tuesday, 11/14 at 7:00 P.M. in the Church Hall All parents of children preparing for the sacrament (RE, St. Al’s/St. Pat’s, Everest Academy) are expected to attend to discuss the preparation and celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Garden Thank You

Now that the cold weather has set in, our gar-den has been put to rest for the season. A big thank-you and much appreciation and gratitude goes out to our parishioners who put forth so much time and energy to build, plant, water, pick and transport the vegetables to the Lem-ont Food Pantry this past summer: Tim Mathi-as and family who built the raised beds and do-nated the soil, the O’Hara Family for watering the plants, and to Carol Faron and Mary & Greg Umentum who planted and spent count-less hours tending to the garden. Many thanks to Don & Barb Betley, Carol Faron and the Umentums for donating the plants, which yield-ed quite a harvest. Many area residents were able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

If you are expecting a baby, family and friends have showered you with gifts and you have no doubt furnished and dec-orated a nursery. In the same way your Catholic community, through the sacrament of Baptism, welcomes and offers spiritual strength and encouragement as your child begins a life-long journey of faith. Our Baptismal Preparation program, Journey of Faith: Birth, Baptism, Belonging, is a seminar that will help you better understand the sacrament of Baptism. The seminar can be taken while awaiting the birth of your child or shortly after the baby is born. The seminar will meet on a Saturday of alternate months from 9:00 am to Noon in the Religious Ed-ucation Building. The last Seminar date for 2017 is: November 11th. If you have not attended a baptismal prepara-tion class at St. Alphonsus in the last three years you must participate in a Baptism seminar. Call the Parish Office at 630-257-2414 to schedule the baptism seminar along with your baptismal date.

WHO ARE THESE KNIGHTS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Members of The Knights of Columbus Council #1599 in Lemont meet regu-larly on the 1st Tuesday of each month at the VFW Post to continue organiz-ing efforts to help those in need.

Members, be there on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Annually, we raise funds for important causes like the Special Religious Development Program (SPRED) and Special Recreation Program (SRA). We also do other things like: • Donating to Lemont Parishes toward the costs of

special needs. • Selling raffle tickets August through November

to raise funds to benefit the Illinois Vocations Support Program (Our Priests of Tomorrow).

• Providing funds for children to attend Scout Camps.

• Providing winter coats for kids. • Providing rosaries for St. Patrick’s and St. Al-

phonsus’ parish members. • Assisting Kops-N-Kids by offering secure park-

ing for bikes belonging to children who meet for a day of fun with police at the Lemont Park Dis-trict each year.

• Walking for Right-To-Life on Lemont streets every October on Respect Life Sunday which ends with prayer and benediction for Respect for Life at St. Alphonsus.

• Building a vegetable garden area behind St. Al-phonsus’ office for Lemont food pantries.

Parishioners, it is through your purchases and dona-tions that these Lemont Knights of Columbus mem-bers can continue helping those in need. Thank you!

Lemont Parishes Public Rosary To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Fatima apparitions and striving to live out the messages our Blessed Mother gave at Fatima, a large group of parishioners from the Lemont Catholic parishes, led by Deacon Dan Rittenhouse, gathered to pray the rosary in Mary’s honor. As darkness fell, lit candles illuminated the group, as they prayed along State Street near the life-sized statue of Mary in front of St. Alphon-sus Church. Thank you to all who came out to give witness to the important role our Blessed Mother has in our lives.

SPRED NEEDS

There are many ways we can grow in our faith. The SPRED (special reli-gious development) program is one way. It is a faith development program for people with developmental and in-tellectual challenges.

The St. Alphonsus SPRED group is in need of cate-chists. This group works with adults (22 and older) who have special needs. We build a small faith community of faith that grows together in the Lord! We are also working to begin the SPRED program once again at St. Patrick’s for the 17 – 21 age group. We have two friends waiting to become involved again. However, we need adult volunteers. We now have two adult volunteers and just need six more men and women. No experience is necessary.

Is it something that you would like to be involved in? One SPRED volunteer recalls: “SPRED is the time of sharing myself with others on a level that just does not occur anywhere else in my life. SPRED has changed the way I view my faith.” A volunteer is one who enjoys meeting new people, wants to form friend-ships, and serve the Church.

To find out more about this ministry please come to a SPRED informational meeting on Monday, November 13th, 7:00 pm, at St. Pat’s religious ed building, rm 8. We would also like to know the families of children, teens, young adults, and adults with special needs. Please open your hearts and discover SPRED by at-tending the meeting. Attending the meeting is not a commitment. Listen, ask questions and make your own decision. If you have any questions, please call Carol at 630-257-2414. We need your help!

On Saturday, Nov. 11th at 12:00 p.m., St. Alphonsus Parish will celebrate a prayer service at our World War II Memorial Garden outside of church which was beautifully restored by Eagle Scout Adam Popper. We will have a flag ceremony and special blessing of this honored space. Please join us as we give thanks to those who gave their lives for our free-dom.
