Pastor’s Corner Dear Friends, This Sunday, Catholic Christians celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus. In the account of this event by St. Luke, we encounter not only John the Baptist baptizing Jesus, but we encounter the Blessed Trinity. The Holy Spirit appears as a dove, and God the Father appears as a “voice” from heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I
am well pleased” (Luke 3: 22). For those of us who are Christians, this feast day also leads us to reflect on our own baptisms, the event that made us reborn in the life of the Spirit, the day the Holy Spirit entered into us and brought us many gifts. But many of us fail to recognize the significance of this rebirth. Today might be a good time to ask ourselves some questions. What was the date of our baptism? What was the name of our baptism church? In what city was this church? Who were our godparents? How do we celebrate this day each year? Believe it or not, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is right around the corner again! On the weekend of January 16-17, we’ll see the bishop’s film. On the weekend of January 23-24, we’ll hear a short talk by Seminarian Michael Coveyou and have our first in-pew solicitation. The weekend of January 30-31, we’ll have our second in-pew solicitation.

MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah de-scribes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).

St. Mary's Young Families Group The St. Mary's Young Families group meets the last Sunday of each month in the school library on the 2nd floor of the Tileston Center directly across from the Upper Room. Our target audience is any fami-ly with at least one child 0-5 (your older children are also welcome, of course). We have even had people join us before their first is born. Whoever you are, you are welcome to join us!
Columbarium and Memorial Garden
We are pleased to report that since our introductory meeting in June, 55 families have reserved niches in the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary Columbarium and Memorial Garden.
As stated in the presentation meetings, we need a minimum of 120 niches sold to begin construction of the gardens.
During this holiday season, please give prayerful consideration to becoming a part of this historic project. Adoration Effective this week The Basilica Shrine of St. Mary will now have Adoration on Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm till 8 pm and Fridays after Mass until 1:00 pm. Year of Mercy Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has announced the Church throughout the world will observe an Extraordinary Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy.
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.
For the next seven weeks, we will highlight a Corporal Work of Mer-cy. After each work of mercy there will be suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives. Feed the hungry: There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources. • Did you have delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas din-
ner? Donate to a food drive so everyone can have something to eat.
• Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry.
• The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.
• Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, pur-chasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.

North Carolina Mass and March for Life Join faithful from across the Diocese for the North Carolina Mass and March for Life on Friday, January 22, 2016, in Washington D.C. This year, in the Diocese of Raleigh, over 30 buses from parishes and schools are expected to make the trip. The day begins with Mass with Bishops Michael Burbidge of the Raleigh Diocese and Bishop Peter Jugis of the Charlotte Diocese and many North Carolina priests and deacons at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 11:30 a.m. The march on the mall follows with hundreds of thousands of people from across the United States. The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016 The Christmas season closes with today’s Feast. We observe John the Baptist in awe of his cousin, Jesus Who comes to him to be baptized. Just a few weeks ago we sang Carols around the Crib and listened to the story of the Magi. Jesus’ coming is all about mission – he has come to tell us about His Father’s kingdom and how we are called to be with Him forever. And how do we get there? By seeing God present all around us in the people and the daily events of our lives. The months of November and December were busy ones for the Outreach. Thanks to help from our Parishioners and friends, over 100 families received Thanksgiving Dinner and they were very grateful. A few weeks later more families, 39, were given gifts and Dinner to celebrate Christmas. So many volunteers gave of their time to purchase food and gifts with money others donated from the Giving Tree. Others organized the gifts that were donated from the Tree and also the Tree at the Cotton Exchange so that everyone on our list was taken care of. Additional volunteers put together more than 200 hygiene boxes that were then hand-delivered to the residents of Hadden Hall, the John Walker Apartments and the Full Gospel Rescue Mission. We had such an incredible response that those who stayed at the Salvation Army and Good Shepherd, also received a beautifully wrapped box filled with very useful items on Christmas Eve. You can feel the wonderful spirit of love and caring during the Christmas Season and today we are encouraged to continue living in that Spirit. Our own baptism calls us to serve our brothers and sisters, whatever their needs. Each weekend as we walk through St. Mary Basilica’s Holy Door during this Year of Mercy, and sign ourselves with Holy Water, may we recall our own Baptism and let us recommit ourselves to service. Bishop Untener’s words on the last page of the little blue book… “We are workers, not master builders, ministers not messiahs. Special Need for the Week: Clothing for young children, ages 6-12. Our beautiful quilt was won by a woman who lives in California, Syl-via Cox, who is a quilter herself. She was thrilled to learn she won it. The funds we gathered from the sale of tickets will go towards pur-chasing microwaves. RCIA We do not meet this week. Next Saturday we begin learning about the Sacraments – those signs that give us abundant life and help us on our journey.

Will Return Next Week St. Mary Athletics
What an athletic year it has been! Our Cross-country team and Volleyball teams started their season dealing with the elements...heat and hu-midity....one team outside while the other dealt with it inside. Both teams weathered the ele-ments and were a credit to our school. Our Cross
-country team has made a mark in the Middle School Cross-country program by placing our young athletes in the top of their races each week, while our Volleyball team made the semi- finals of conference play for the 4th year in a row. There were small bumps along the way for our young girls and boys, but they were able to come together and work hard to support each other as a team. When I attended the Cross-country races, I saw parents and fellow students cheering and encour-aging the athletes. When I sat with our Volleyball team during practic-es and matches, I saw and heard positive encouragement throughout the gym. This led to many close matches which the girls pulled off and won. Our Girls' Tennis team was small in number, but they took to the court and played like champions. Other schools complimented our young ladies and enjoyed playing with such sportsmanlike play-ers. Thank you to the coaches and volunteer parents who gave the athletes both leadership and direction. Our athletes make St. Mary proud. The first half of our Basketball season is coming to an end, and both teams show promise for the remainder of the season. In addition to playing league contests, I scheduled non-league contests for both teams to give our young athletes physical and mental challenges. They, too, had some bumps to deal with during these contests, but with positive leadership and dedicated coaching, the resilient young athletes were able to succeed. The coaches and administrators of several schools we have recently played sent emails with compliments to our young athletes regarding their sportsmanship and perseverance. Our athletes extended a hand to help an opponent and showed support when someone was injured. These student athletes represent the values of St. Mary School so well. This year we will host the semifinals and finals. What a thrill it would be for our athletes to rise to the top and play in the finals! When the final buzzer sounds, these children would like to say that they are a championship team and raise their trophy for all to see. They know that to reach that goal, they need to work hard as individuals and work together as a team. Come watch our teams in January. The schedule is posted on the ath-letic calendar that you can reach through the school's main webpage. Again, we need parent help at each home game to make these events work. Yearbook We have a new (color!) yearbook company this year and a Publica-tions class in the middle school which lets the kids take part in putting together our yearbook. We are very excited about creating a very spe-cial yearbook this year.
Great photographs make a great yearbook. I know there are a lot of awesome photographs being taken. I'm fortunate enough to see some of them via Facebook and email. The more great pictures we have, the better yearbook we can produce- and the better chances of us repre-senting as many children as we possibly can in the yearbook (our goal).
