MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

October 16th, 2016, 29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Today’s theme is perseverance — Moses keeping his hands upraised throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching, and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, we, too, must persevere in the roles to which we are called.

DEPENDING ON GOD “Getting by with a little help from our friends” is not an idea that began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of “getting by with a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend’s scriptures. No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered—even

though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord. Copyright © J. S. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, October 16th, 2016 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time [Jesus] told them a parable about the

necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. - Luke 18:1

Anna prayed many days before her birthday for a new bike. At night, before bed, she was so tired she could hardly keep her eyes open. Still she prayed. But Anna’s parents could not afford a new bike. Instead, Anna got some new shoes she needed for school. Did God not listen to Anna’s prayer? God did hear her prayer, as he does all our prayers. We do not know when or how God will respond to our prayers. We know God loves us and wants the best for us. So don’t stop praying —even when you are tired.

Reflections on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: Trusting in and relying upon God gives us strength to persevere during trials, and live as more faithful disciples of Jesus. Many people in our world think they are self-sufficient and do not need God. As believers in Jesus, however, we are called to trust and rely upon Him. We know God is our strength and salvation, and the more we rely on Him, the more we will receive the strength we need to face life’s challenges. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the reading from Exodus, the Israelites, led by Joshua, defeat Amalek in battle with the help of Moses. The Second letter of Timothy reminds us to study sacred Scripture so that we may be equipped for every good work. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the persistent widow, helping us to see that God gives us what we need when we place trust in Him.

AAARRANGEDRRANGEDRRANGED... This story of the friendship between a young

Orthodox Jewish woman and a Muslim woman living in New York was released in 2007 but is even more timely today. A film of warmth and humor, it also raises interesting questions about the nature of love and cultural imperatives. We will screen about a third of the movie each evening, followed by discussion. For further information please contact Mark or Shelley Calde at 310-641-1157.

The month of the Holy Rosary is October and this entire month is

dedicated to the Rosary. The feast day of the Holy Rosary in particular is October 7th. The feast of the Rosary is held on October 7th in memory of the glorious and triumphant victory at the battle of Lepanto. That battle was the most convincing military victory that proved without a doubt the great power of the Rosary. The month of October is a good time to commit to praying the Rosary everyday. The Rosary will bring great peace and holiness to your life. It is a powerful instrument for conversion. The Rosary is the best method of honoring Mary.
