Dear Parishioners, Happy Feast of the Holy Family!

I love this Feast Day so much. We pray that the Holy Family will not only serve as a model for our own individual families, but also for our Parish Family!!! I am progressing nicely. I am trying to get used to using a cane now!!! The therapy is a little arduous, but I keep working hard to try to increase stamina. Thank you for your prayers. They are working! Please know that all of your priests wish you and your families a very Happy and Blessed New Year!! Devotedly yours, Father Gabe

Reflection on Today’s Readings: Focus: May the word of God dwell in our families. In our families, we are called to live out the great commandments of loving God and loving our neighbor. The family is God’s holy ground in which we strengthen each individual born in His image and likeness. May all in families, always strive to live lives of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and forgiveness as children of God. Liturgy of the Word: Sirach’s message in the first reading is for children to honor their parents. In the second reading, Paul talks about family life in the Lord. Today’s Gospel tells about how, after three days, Jesus is found in the Temple.

Ministry in Community …

Teaching kids to be safe around unfamiliar animals - We’ve all had the experience of someone else’s dog approaching us. Uncertainty about the dog’s intent can be

frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice on teaching their children to read a dog’s body language and to identify signs that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parents teach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog. For more information, check out Dog Bite Prevention and Safety at www.aspca.org. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

FACT OF LIFE Bishops Start Prayer Campaign Against Abortion The nation’s Catholic bishops have started a new campaign for pro-lifers to pray to end abortion and for religious freedom to be respected since it is currently under attack by the Obama administration. The bishops are emphasizing that this is not just another program but part of a movement for life and religious liberty and invitation to prayer and penance. The five-part strategy or call to prayer was approved by the bishops in November and is set to begin after Christmas. The overall focus is to invite Catholics to pray for rebuilding a culture favorable to life and religious liberty. In addition a second Fortnight for Freedom is planned for June and July. Campaign components include monthly Eucharistic holy hours in cathedrals and parishes, daily family rosary, special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses, fasting and abstinence on Fridays, and the second observance of a Fortnight for Freedom. The bishops say the call to prayer is prompted by the rapid social movements and policy changes currently un-derway, such as the mandate by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that coerces employers, including heads of religious agencies, to pay for sterilizations, abortion-inducing drugs and contraceptives. “The pastoral strategy is essentially a call and encouragement to prayer and sacrifice—it’s meant to be simple,” said Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, chairman of the bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. “It’s not meant to be another program but rather part of a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty, which engages the New Evangelization and can be incorporated into the Year of Faith. Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty are not only foundational to Catholic social teaching but also fundamental to the good of society,” he said. LifeNews.com Dec 6, 2012

Matters of Faith - The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), often called “Vatican II,” was a worldwide meeting of bishops and the pope. Out of that gathering came The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which states that “every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others.” (7)

Jesus told His disciples that they must east His flesh and drink His blood. (John 6:53-56)

At the Last Supper, Christ instituted the Mass when He said. “This is my Body,” and “This is my Blood: (Matthew 26:26-28)

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus’ followers recognized Him in the breaking of the bread (Luke 24:13-35)

The Apostles celebrated an early form of the Mass with the very first Christians. (Acts 2:42)

The Book of Revelation is a vision of how the Mass on earth is part of the worship that goes on in heaven forever.

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, hu-mility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another…

Colossians 3:12-13

Kind, humble, gentle, patient—wouldn’t it be great if everyone in your family would be like that all the time? Maybe they are, but are you? Are you will-ing to forgive and be patient with parents, brothers, and sisters? God’s help is available to you just as it was to Mary and Joseph as they made a home for Jesus. Ask God to help you be a holy member of your own family. Lord, thank you for the gift of my family. Help me to be a loving part of it.
