Dear Friends in Christ,Each year we happily present you with this directory of names, addresses, and phone numbers of our Registered

Parishioners. Not only does it afford you the opportunity to easily communicate with one another but it also is a resource—one that lets you know what is happening in our parish and who are the ones that are making it happen. We would like to see your names also among this latter group.

Who we are, what we have, and what we do, depends upon each one of us. We are proud of the progress we have made thus far—especially as a growing community of caring people.

Let me thank you for being a member of our parish and for your support of all that we do.

Sincerely,

Father Vincent M. Rogers, Pastor

Mission StatementWe, the parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, are a diverse family of faith who are striving to become the people of God by being open to His Word and Spirit.

We are committed to worship God by celebrating the Eucharist, by proclaiming the Word of God to our community in union with the Universal Church, by reaching out to others in service, and by providing the opportunity for our children to receive a quality Catholic education.

In this worshipping together, we come to know, love, and support each other through participation in parish ministries and in sharing our gifts and talents according to the resources God has entrusted to us.

History of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic ParishSt. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church was established by a decree of Bishop Charles H. Helmsing on July 1, 1964. He appointed Fr. Walter J. Pilecki to pastor the original 46 families who formed the parish. Lacking a building, the new community worshipped at the Melody-McGilley-Eylar Funeral Home on Vivion Road. Daily Masses were celebrated at the first rectory on North Brighton Road.

Worship continued in this way until the Rectory Chapel (the current rectory) was completed two years later. Liturgies were then held in the basement until the present church was finished and dedicated in 1974. Msgr. John Huhmann replaced Father Pilecki and served as pastor until accepting an assignment outside the Diocese in July 1977.

The parish’s third pastor, Father Linus Link, took up his duties and guided the parish for the next 16 years. During his pastorate, the Link Center was built in 1992. This building served as a religious education and multi-purpose building until September 1997 when St. Andrew’s began an Early Childhood Learning Center.

Father Thomas Wiederholt replaced the retiring Father Link in July 1993. Father Wiederholt remained pastor until June 1998.

Monsignor Joseph A. Mancuso became our fifth pastor on June 17, 1998. Monsignor built the parish school in 1999 and remained pastor until his retirement on June 30, 2010. Father Vincent M. Rogers, our current and sixth pastor, replaced Monsignor Mancuso on July 1, 2010.

St. Andrew’s School began in the fall of 1999 with Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes. St. Andrew’s School reached the 8th grade in 2008. The school’s first principal, Sister Leona Bax, who watched the school grow to its current numbers, retired in 2009. She was replaced by Mr. Wayne Winkler. Mrs. Rebecca Sachen joined us as principal beginning 2013 as Mr. Winkler moved on in his career teaching special education.

St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church has grown from its original 46 families to over 800 families. A new crucifix with relics from St. Andrew and six other saints was hand crafted by one of our parishioners. That same woodworker made our new altar which Bishop Finn consecrated on April 18, 2013. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the parish.

The students are removed from behind their desks into their own large-group environmental called “The Lounge” for activities, teachings and prayer that make their Catholic faith relevant to their everyday lives. The youth build Christ-centered relationships through multiple weekly events as well as retreats and conferences.

Totus Tuus Youth ProgramWhat is Totus Tuus? This is a week-long Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the faith in a fun, energetic setting. Non-Catholic students are also welcome to attend! It includes a day program (for K-6th grade) and an evening program (for 7th-12th grade). The goal is to impart a joy-filled experience to the students while they learn aspects of the faith so that they may be inspired to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ and to grow in holiness!!

Totus Tuus is Latin for “Totally Yours.” It was Pope John Paul II’s papal motto meaning that he desired to belong totally to Jesus. Likewise, the Totus Tuus team desires to give their ALL to the youth in this fun-filled, faith program! To volunteer or register for this event, please contact Katie Overstreet in the Parish Office ([email protected]).

Adult Faith FormationBible Study/Adult EducationOnce or twice during the year, we offer a 4-12 week study course on Scripture or Apologetics. The course provides an in-depth study of one book or area of the Bible or apologetic’s topics. This not only provides deeper knowledge of Scripture and our Catholic faith but also teaches people how to read, understand and apply God’s Word and our Catholic faith to daily life. When a course is given, information will be in the bulletin and on the web site.

Small Faith Sharing GroupsSmall Faith-Sharing Groups provide an opportunity to pray, explore the Sunday readings, share our faith based on Gospel values and discuss ways of applying the Scriptures to our daily lives. There is no written work, only reading and reflecting. Groups are developed depending on parishioners’ interest and availability. A sense of community unfolds as group members grow in their faith and their relationships with other members. We meet every Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM in the Fr. Pilecki Room in the Rectory.

CursilloWhat’s the Cursillo? Cursillo is an encounter with oneself, Christ, and our brothers and sisters. It enables Catholics to: deepen their relationship with Christ; grow in their understanding and appreciation for the Catholic faith; share their faith with family, friends, and others; and sustain a much deeper faith life for the rest of their lives. Learn more at www.cursillo.net.

RCIC ClassesThe Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) is open to all youth between the ages of 8-18, who are unbaptized, baptized Catholic, or baptized in a non-Catholic faith tradition. These classes are designed to give the youth an overview of the Catholic faith as well as to prepare them for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, and First Communion. If the youth is older than 9th grade, (s)he will also receive Confirmation prep. Whether your family is just entering the Church, returning to the practice of the Catholic faith, or were delayed in your children’s sacramental preparation, all youth are welcome to attend. Classes run from September until April. Please contact Katie Overstreet in the Parish Office.

2. ADULTRite of Christian Initiation of AdultsDan Grelinger & Barbara Funari, Coordinators, Katie Overstreet, Staff Representative

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) strives to encourage the spiritual journey of a person in a three-fold way: ecclesial/sacramental, personal, and communal. The RCIA process teaches the students an overview of the truths of the Catholic faith, entrusted by Christ to the Church, in order to prepare them for receiving Christ himself in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass. After gaining knowledge about Christ in class, the students are also encouraged to develop a personal relationship with him, to fall in love with the God who created them. Finally, the students are encouraged to have an apostolic faith – to recognize Christ in their neighbor and to be concerned about the needs of their community. Classes run from September until April. If you would like to volunteer with the program, or to register for the class, please contact Katie Overstreet in the Parish Office or at [email protected].

Marriage PreparationTo be married at St. Andrew’s, you must be a registered and active parishioner. Please contact Father Rogers at least nine (9) months prior to your anticipated marriage date for an initial interview and instructions on the marriage preparation process.

Shut-In MinistersExtraordinary ministers bring the Eucharist to the homebound and those confined to healthcare centers or nursing homes as a part of the Shut-In Ministry. If you have a love for the Eucharist and for the homebound, you are invited to join this ministry. If you know of anyone who is in need of this ministry, please contact Silvia Torres.

Marriage AnnulmentThe Church may declare a nullity of marriage when an element essential for a sacramentally binding marriage was not present. It is a process that can lead to healing and a future sacramental marriage. Annulments have no civil bearing; hence, they do not impact alimony, child-support, or the legitimacy of children. An Annulment Advocate is someone who works with a person who entered into a marriage recognized by society but that might not be sacramentally licit. They represent that person to the diocesan Tribunal which determines the sacramental validity of the union. An annulment recognizes the legal marriage but implies no moral judgment or blame regarding either of the parties. If you are divorced and seek an annulment through the Church, please contact the Parish Office to schedule an appointment with Father Rogers or the Annulment Advocate (Katie Overstreet’s e-mail: [email protected]). Those seeking an annulment, especially in preparation for marriage in the Catholic Church or joining RCIA, need to plan with an open length of time. The process can be very quick or take a very long time depending on the merits of each case.

Social Outreach MinistrySt. Andrew’s Ministry of Social Outreach acknowledges that every person is entrusted with unique gifts to be used in serving God and our neighbors. The mission of the Social Outreach Ministry is to encourage our parishioners to become involved in at least one ministry utilizing his or her God-given abilities in serving God and our neighbors. Time, energy and moral support are given to diocesan, parish, and community organizations which, among others, are:

Feed our Neighbor - Food pantries are supplied with non-perishable food for parishioners or others who call the parish for assistance. The food collected is distributed to St. Benedict’s food pantry in Pleasant Valley.

Emergency Assistance - Limited funds are budgeted each month for monetary assistance to provide partial payments of rent and utilities for those who cannot pay. Parishioners have priority but we will assist anyone we can, based on available funds.

St. Benedict’s Food Pantry - St. Andrew’s Social Outreach is committed to helping distribute food to the poor on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The food pantry is located at 6600 E 69 Hwy. Call Geri Townsend, 468-6552, if you are interested in helping.

St. Joseph Table (Primary Annual Fundraiser for St. Andrew’s)History of St. Joseph’s Day and Table - St. Joseph’s Day is a Roman Catholic feast day commemorating the life of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Joseph was known as the protector of the Holy Family.

St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated on March 19 with the Festa San Giuseppe (Feast of St. Joseph). It began in Italy, and it is a tradition that the immigrants brought with them when they came to the United States. According to legend, a terrible drought and famine plagued the people of Sicily during the Middle Ages. It virtually destroyed most of their crops, and many people in the Western part of Sicily died of starvation. The people began to pray to St. Joseph and begged for his intercession for their plight.

In return for being assisted, they promised to celebrate his feast day annually by having special altars or tables laden with their most precious possessions (food), which would be shared with all people – rich and poor – as their thanksgiving to him.

God, through St. Joseph’s intercessions, answered their prayers. The rains came, and the land, which had been browned and barren, was now lush and green again. Sicilians kept their promise to St. Joseph throughout the generations by preparing elaborate food altars, passing this tradition on to their children and to their communities.

Pro-Life Committee Edie Ferrara, Co-CoordinatorMadelyn Ross, Co-Coordinator

The St. Andrew Respect Life Committee seeks to promote a deep respect for life, from conception to natural death, through prayer and support for those in need by providing education and communication. Liturgical MinistryLiturgical celebrations are the major focus of our community life. Joining together for worship as a parish family builds and strengthens our common bond of faith. The Liturgical Ministry strives to steadily improve the quality and efficacy of our common prayer. This Ministry is composed of the Coordinators of the various liturgical ministries (Lectors, Ushers, et al.) and other parishioners who have an interest in liturgy.

Altar ServersAltar servers assist the Priest at all Masses. Servers must be in 4th grade or older and must have made their First Holy Communion.

Eucharistic AdorationSt. Andrew’s Eucharistic Adoration Society is devoted to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday from 9:30 AM-6:00 PM. We seek to promote devotion to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. All participants are encouraged to sign up for and be present for one hour of personal worship and prayer on Thursdays in church. Family Hour is 5:00-6:00 PM. The Rosary is prayed starting at 5:30, with Benediction at 5:50.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy CommunionExtraordinary ministers assist the Priest in distributing communion at the weekend and Holy Day Liturgies when needed. It is necessary that all those serving in this capacity be fully initiated into the Church (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist). The Diocese provides initial training.

GreetersGreeters help: (1) set the tone for the worship of the community by welcoming people warmly at the doors of the Church; (2) assist those who are new to the parish as well as answer questions that might arise; and, (3) hand out bulletins after Mass.

LectorsThe Lector proclaims the Word of God during the Liturgy of the Word at Mass. Training is provided for new lectors.

Music MinistryMusic is the unique language of worship and plays an important part in the Church. Music joins the assembly with Christ, who is the source and the content of the song. The ministry of music encourages the active participation of the assembly in song and seeks to develop cantors, choir members and musicians to lead and assist the congregation in sung prayer. Susan is organist, pianist and director of choirs.

Adult Choir: Individuals high school age and above are invited to join the choir on Wednesday evenings at 7:15 PM in the church for choir rehearsal. The one “requirement” is that you love to sing! Come and join us in singing praise to the Lord! All are welcome.Youth Choir: Ages 2nd grade through 8th meets the 1st Sunday of each month at 9:30 AM. They then sing the 10:30 Mass that day.

SacristansSacristans are responsible for preparations required for the celebration of the liturgy. They are in charge of the sacristy where the sacred vessels, vestments and linens are kept. Sacristans open the church, set out the bread and wine and put the liturgical vessels in place. They ensure the sacramentary and lectionary are opened to the appropriate reading. They also conduct inventory and prepare for special liturgical services such as Passion Sunday, Easter, Christmas, baptisms, marriages and funeral services.

UshersUshers help the congregation by seating people, assisting those going to Communion and taking up the Offertory collection. All men, women and youth of the parish are invited to be Ushers. The only requirement is a spirit of hospitality.

OrganizationsThe Organizations provide opportunities to share and spread the Word of God. This ministry offers Legion of Mary, Cursillo men and women groups, promotion of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Altar and Rosary SocietyThe Altar & Rosary Society periodically sponsors fund-raising projects. Proceeds are used for the purchase of altar items and seasonal decorations, altar bread (when necessary), funeral brunches, and several receptions. Altar and Rosary is also responsible for doing altar linens and keeping the altar and sacristy clean.

Coming Home CommitteeThrough the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we, the lay faithful, strive to promote unity and community through the evangelization of the Catholic faith. We are committed to fostering a culture of discipleship to all God’s children by inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and his church. Our mission is to evangelize, welcome, encourage, guide, and empower all to become intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. Committee members make a one or two-year commitment to this mission. For any questions, or to volunteer, please contact Katie Overstreet in the Parish Office.

Safe Environment ProgramsThe safety of our children comes first. The VIRTUS training class, also known as “Protecting God’s Children,” is a diocesan program that EVERYONE who will be working with youth in any capacity, is mandated to attend. This program teaches professionals as well as school, parish, and minor volunteers about child abuse prevention by recognizing warning signs of predators, safe and unsafe situations, and boundary violations. It also presents information about mandatory reporting and other issues. After completing the one-time class, each volunteer must then complete a background check form (adults only), sign an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Code of Conduct form (adults and minors), as well as a volunteer application. All 4 steps must be completed in order to work with children in our diocese.

“To maintain a joyful family requires much from both the parents and the children. Each member of the family has to become, in a special way, the servant of the others.” —Pope John Paul II

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish School is accredited by the Missouri Chapter of the National Federation of Non-Public School State Accrediting Association and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. We provide an exceptional Catholic education to the children of the Northland neighborhoods of Kansas City.

It is our Mission to provide the spiritual and academic formation for the development of each unique individual while recognizing the parent as the primary educator. St. Andrew’s emphasizes traditional subjects—Math, Language, Arts, Science, Social Studies as well as Music, Art, PE, and Computers. We are committed to instilling values that reflect the teaching of the Catholic Church thereby preparing them to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Religion is taught not only as a subject area but also as an integral part of each school day.

The state-of-the-art preschool opened in 1997 and our parish grade school opened in 1999. We now have classes from preschool through 8th grade.

St. Andrew’s School is funded through the financial commitment of the entire parish community. We simply ask that you be a registered, tithing member of the parish. Families not associated with the parish may make arrangements for tuition through the parish business office.
