Today’s Readings First Reading — The glory of the L shows through Israel, a light to all nations, that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6). Psalm — Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Second Reading — All those who call upon the name of the Lord are called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:1-3). Gospel — John the Baptist testifies: The one who comes after me, on whom the Spirit comes down and remains, is the Son of God (John 1:29-34). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna-tional Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Called to Be Holy

With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relationship with Jesus. Israel’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also rec-ognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Readings for the Week Monday: 1 Sm 15:16-23; Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday: 1 Sm 16:1-13; Ps 89:20-22, 27-28; Mk 2:23-28 Wednesday: 1 Sm 17:32-33, 37, 40-51; Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10; Mk 3:1-6, or any of a number of readings for the Day of Prayer Thursday: 1 Sm 18:6-9; 19:1-7; Ps 56:2-3, 9-13; Mk 3:7-12 Friday: 1 Sm 24:3-21; Ps 57:2-4, 6, 11; Mk 3:13-19 Saturday: Acts 22:3-16 or Acts 9:1-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Mk 16:15-18 Sunday: Is 8:23 — 9:3; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; 1 Cor 1:10-13, 17; Mt 4:12-23 [12-17]

Altar Server/Parent Meeting/Party

Sunday, January 19 Noon - 2:00 p.m.

in the Chapel/Narthex

All current altar servers are invited!

Parents, please plan to remain for the first half

hour for a quick meeting. After that, we will have

games and a pizza party to show our appreciation for all that our servers do

for the parish!

Eucharistic Ministers Workshop Wednesday, January 22, 7:00 p.m.

in the Church and Narthex

All Eucharistic Ministers should plan to attend this discussion led by Dr. Kimberly M. Lymore, M.Div. This seminar will cover the basics, as well as local

guidelines, and a reminder of the importance of this ministry we all share.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Is it important for Christians to be represented in a census? Mary and Joseph certainly believed so. Think of the great distance they traveled, in Mary’s delicate condition, so that they could be counted by the Ro-man government. We will find it much easier to be counted this com-

ing year. Census 2020 will be available online, so anyone with a computer, tablet, or mobile phone can participate from the comfort of their own home or office. The Lan-sing Public Library will also have computers and staff available to help anyone who needs assistance. Let’s plan now to make sure we are all represented in the 2020 Cen-sus.

Thanks to some very generous donors, there is again a 2-for-1 matching gift program for schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago. For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020, the school will receive TWO DOLLARS IN MATCHING FUNDS. The donations are capped at $50,000 per school. So if you donate $1,000 and designate St. Ann School Lan-sing, your donation will have a net cost of $250 (remember you get $750 back on your state taxes), and your donation will provide a total of $3,000 to St. Ann’s to use for student scholarships.

Donors making your gift in January or February, you will be able to claim your tax credit on your 2020 tax return. YOU CAN DESIGNATE ST. ANN SCHOOL AS THE RECIPIENT OF YOUR FUNDING! This is a wonderful opportunity to help our school and support the mission of providing a quality Catholic education to students in our community who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

The Strack & VanTil Apples for the Students Program will help us earn Apple Computers and iPads, not to mention hundreds of other items! To earn these FREE awards we simply have to collect as many Strack & VanTil register receipts as possible from September 1 - March 2. Ask your friends and relatives to shop at Strack & VanTil and save every receipt. Send the receipts in to St. Ann’s as often as possi-ble. We will count the value of the regis-ter tapes collected and redeem them for great and helpful items. Give them to a St. Ann Student, look for the yellow col-lection bag in the Narthex, or turn them in at either office. Thank you!

THE NEXT GENERATION OF BOX TOPS

Box Tops is changing to fit today's families. The new and im-proved Box Tops mobile app uses state-of-the-art technology to scan your store receipt, find participating products and in-stantly add Box Tops to our school's earnings online.

MORE CONVENIENT: Redeem anywhere, anytime within 14 days of purchase

REAL TIME: Our St. Ann earnings are automatically updated online

EASY TO USE: No more clipping or sending Box Tops to school (once all remaining Box Tops printed on packaging have been redeemed, they will no longer be printing them)

EXTRA CASH: Access special bonus offers on top of your Box Tops earnings

Still have Box Tops clips at home? Send them in now so our coordinator can submit them by the spring deadline. All unexpired Box Tops are still valid and will count toward our St. Ann School earnings. Traditional Box Tops clips are being phased out of production, but may continue to be found on many products throughout the store for some time. You can still clip and give them to a St. Ann student or place in the collection box in the Narthex 411 Center.
