Our first Catholic School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 3, at 6:00 p.m., in the library. Please consider putting your name forward to be a council member.

Participation on the council is not only rewarding in itself, but provides a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and the teaching staff. In an effort to remove barriers for attendance at evening meetings, the school will provide free babysitting and dinner to all council members. A nomination form is included in this newsletter. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, September 14, 2017. Each nominee will be contacted by telephone to confirm receipt of the nomination form. School Council meeting dates will be indicated on the monthly calendars (usually three to four meetings per year) and are open to any parent or guardian who wishes to attend. A full list of council members will be published on our school website, after elections have taken place.

September 2017 Volume 9, Issue 1

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am delighted that you have chosen to be a part of our school community this year. I hope you will join me, the staff, and all members of our community in working together to make this year the very best.

No matter where I’ve been, I’ve learned that the needs of students are essentially the same: they need a meaningful curriculum delivered by passionate, dedicated teachers, and supported by involved parents and families.

I look forward to getting to know each student as the year progresses. I thank all parents for their commitment to their son or daughter’s education and for their support of our Catholic school.

I have an open door policy with all partners in education. I am available and willing to listen if you have concerns, now or during the year. Come and see for yourself all the good things that are happening at St. Anne Catholic School!

I hope to see everyone at our Open House on Tuesday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. Please do not hesitate to

contact us at 705-969-2101 if you have any questions.

This year, let us resolve:

...to experience life at its fullest even when it brings the cross rather than the resurrection.

...to say yes to each moment by being fully present to what we are about.

...to be gentle with ourselves as we discover our imperfections.

...to be equally gentle with students, staff, friends, and families as we become aware of their weaknesses.

May we know God’s peace in our lives.

Welcome Back! by Mr. Mathieu

Catholic School Council by Mr. Mathieu

Mr. Mathieu has been leading school communities in the Sudbury area in his role as principal since February 2002. He feels privileged to be a member of a special team of staff, students, and parents who work and have fun together.

Getting the School Year Off to a Good Start!

by Mr. Mathieu

Getting the new school year off to a good start can influence children's atti-tude, confi-dence and per-formance, both socially and academically. The transition from summer holidays to September is often difficult for both children and par-ents, because holidays are carefree, while back-to-school means a more structured environment. First, parents are encour-

aged to start a school sleeping schedule for the child. The safety of the

child, going to and coming from school, should be a priority. It is im-portant that both the parent and child know and understand the rules that govern children's behav-

iour on and off the school premises. Children must be encouraged by their parents to follow the rules. If they are not clear, speak to the classroom teacher.

October 5

School pictures will be tak-en on Thursday, October 5 by Edge Imaging. It is very important that students make a special effort to be present on this day to avoid delays in receiving school pictures. A reminder will be sent to parents the week prior to Picture Day.

Think about a few basics ahead of time, such as bringing a hair brush to school with you for quick touch-ups and limiting expo-sure to the sun a few days before Picture Day. Other things to keep in mind in-clude checking your hair and shirt collar at camera time, practicing your smile, remembering good posture, and relaxing and smiling at the camera as if it’s your best friend. Say cheese!

All medication must be handed in to the main office for proper storage. To ensure every-one’s safety, students are not permitted to have medication in their possession. If your son or daughter is required to take medica-tion during the school day, the school re-quires a release form to be signed by a par-ent or guardian. If your son or daughter re-quires an Epi-pen, a waiver must be signed granting school personnel permission to ad-minister the injection. Students with severe allergies should wear a medic alert bracelet or necklace clearly identifying his or her aller-gy. We promote a nut free environment.

By Ontario law, students must wear a helmet when they ride a bicycle. Students may bring bicycles at their own risk. The school is not responsible for damage or theft. Skate-

boards, roller blades, and scooters are not permitted on school property.

Grade seven and eight students must pur-chase a combination lock for their locker. The combination will be given to the homeroom teacher and the principal.

The Code of Conduct can be found on our school website. You can also find a copy in the introductory pages of the school agenda. Please review this important documentation at home with your son or daughter. All com-munity members will work together to develop spiritually, intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally by aspiring to the highest possible standards of Catholic behaviour, in living out the gospel values, and by fostering a Catholic culture of respect, responsibility and concern for the common good.

Our motto, “Inspire the Mind and Nurture the Soul,” helps us keep an open heart for everyone.

St. Anne Catholic School

All parents and guardians received a package of forms that need to be returned to the school by

Friday, September 8, 2017. Here is a brief explanation of each form:

Student Information Sheet – This form is necessary to help us keep up to date information on your son or daughter. It is vital that this information be kept current. Should there be any changes to the information provided (i.e. work phone numbers) during the course of the school year, please contact the office at your earliest convenience.

Information Release Form – To protect the privacy of students, your consent is required for your son or

daughter’s name or photograph to be published or displayed.

Agenda / Science North Membership Form All students in grades 1 to 8 are required to purchase a school agenda. This is an excellent tool for home and school communication. It also includes the St. Anne Code of Conduct. The cost of the agenda is $7.00. St. Anne Catholic School will once again be purchasing a Science North Membership at a cost of $5.00 per student. Through our fundraising efforts, the school will cover $2.00, reducing your cost to $3.00 per child.

Parent Volunteer Sign Up – Parent volunteers are an integral part of our school community. If you are interested in volunteering, please indicate the areas you are interested in on the form and return it to the school.

School Bus Discipline Policy Guidelines Form – Please review the Bus Policy Guidelines with your son or daughter. Student safety is our primary concern. A student who disregards bus safety rules may have their privileges suspended. Even if your child is a walker, he or she may ride the bus on school field trips.

We’re on the Web st-anne.scdsb.edu.on.ca

Our Breakfast Club program will re-sume the week of September 18th. This program, funded by a num-ber of local agencies, ensures that all of our St. Anne Angels start their day with some healthy nourishment, and we know that helps our students learn. Each morning, teacher volun-teers prepare baskets with a selection of fruit, vegetables, yogurt, cheese, eggs, cereal, and other healthy snacks. We thank our generous teach-ers, ECEs and EAs, and stu-dent Guardian Angels for making our Breakfast Club program a success, and an important part of each day at St. Anne Catholic School.

Student lunches often require a spoon or fork, and usually, the school has these items on hand. However, you should know that the school does not purchase plastic cutlery for stu-dent lunches — plastic utensils and other disposables in the school are generally left over from class or school functions, or have been purchased

St. Anne: Parents and Staff Working Together! by Ms. Comisso

with Breakfast Club funds. While we will always help students to enjoy their lunch in any way we can, we ad-vise you to pack utensils if needed, since you cannot rely on plastic uten-sils always being available at the school.

I am asking that parents help us in ensuring a safe and pleasant morning for all, by driving through our parking lot and dropping your children off with a ‘kiss and ride’ approach. Between 8:35 and 8:50 am, please drive through our main parking lot (near our front entrance), and drop your children off at the sidewalk. They will be greeted there by a staff member, and will make their own way into the school and their classroom.

One of our goals this year is to have all students in their classrooms by 8:50, and we would really appreciate your efforts in seeing that your child/children are here by that time.

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve—even among those students who are struggling in school. Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future. The early elementary years – from kindergarten through third grade – are particularly important ones in children's schooling. Parents and teachers know that children acquire new skills and knowledge rapidly during these years. Moreover, the outcomes of early elementary education, particularly whether or not a child can read proficiently by third grade, are a powerful predictor of later school and life outcomes.

October 2017 Volume 9, Issue 2

There are many advantages to paying school fees online, and we strongly encourage all our families to do so. Manually receiving fees for hundreds of students every day, which involves counting cash, processing cheques, entering records, and preparing deposits is no easy task and wastes a lot of our resources in the office.

Some of the many benefits of paying online include: more streamlined and efficient method of payment collection, reduced administration effort in time, personnel, and phone calls, better security for the school with less cash on the premises, better security for students as they don’t need to carry cash, convenience for parents who can pay online 24/7, no more worrying about when your cheque will be cashed, no more bounced cheques, and more time for teachers in the classroom with students instead of spending large amounts of time collecting and counting money.

Important features of paying online include that parents can pay by debit or credit card, the

system displays all expenses available for payment online, payments are automatically recorded and receipts are automatically provided, and parents always receive an e-mail when there is a new item to purchase. No more lost notes, no more lost money in the bottom of your child’s school bag.

A big misconception some parents have shared with us is that a credit card is required to pay fees online. That is absolutely not the case. Parents who pay online have the choice to use a credit card or have the money taken directly out of their bank account, just like you would with using a debit card. All you need is your transit, branch, and account numbers. Your bank can provide this information. New this month, you can also pay with your VISA and MASTERCARD debit cards.

We strongly encourage you to set up online banking to pay for school fees. If you need assistance, please call the school and we will be pleased to walk you through it.

Why Is It Important To Do Homework?

Let’s Talk.

Homework does serve an important educational pur-pose and it’s helpful for parents to en-courage a healthy atti-tude to home-work from an early age.

Going to school all day is enough for some children, so coming home and hav-ing to do more work isn’t much fun. However as much as they hate home-work, it is an important

part of their education and learning. It can be hard work talking children into

sitting down and dutifully doing any homework they’ve been set, but in the long run it’s definitely worth persisting with it. At the beginning of the school year, ask about your

child's teacher’s home-work routine. You need to know what kind of home-work will be set and the expectations of your input.

Addressing the signs of bullying early, before the behaviour and its impact get worse, is important to creating a safe and caring school and community. As a parent, you can help to prevent bullying by teaching your children how to:

be caring of others

get along

deal with angry feelings

be assertive without being aggressive in standing up for themselves

Children need to understand how important it is to report bullying. Parents can help by en-couraging children to talk about what is hap-

pening at school, in their neighbourhoods, on the bus, etc. As well, it is important to teach children the difference between telling and tattling.

Tattling is reporting to an adult about someone else's behaviour in order to get them in trouble.

Telling is reporting to a responsible adult about someone else's behaviour in order to help someone – themselves or some-one else. When something goes wrong at school, children need to know where they can turn for guidance and support, and what action to expect. Listen carefully to your children and report bullying to the school.

Faith and Life

CompassionHow can our language be healing?Do you remember the saying, “Sticks and stones may break our bones,but words will never hurt us”? The fact that we all remember spokenwords that have hurt us proves that this saying is far from the truth.In fact, Robert Fulghum has a more accurate saying: “Sticks and stonesmay break our bones, but words will break our hearts.” Spoken wordsof kindness are often forgotten, but words of hurt are branded uponour hearts in a way that can remain with us forever.

The Bible tells us to speak words of kindness to each other. InEphesians 4:29, St. Paul says, “Do not let even one bad word comefrom your mouth, but only good words that will encourage . . .” Weshould never underestimate the power of our words. When talking toour children, we should use only positive language. Additionally, letthem see us only speaking kindly about oth-ers. It’s true that we teach who we are. Weneed to teach our children that we are likeJesus. We can’t let our words break hearts;we need to let them heal!

How can we communicate compassionatelywith our children?

• Use encouraging language

• Recognize our children’s full potential, andencourage them to reach it

• Make our homes a supportive, safe, andloving place

Within our families, how can we infuseour relationships with more compassion?What steps can we take to make our communication more pleasing to God?

Resp onsib ilities of Students

Students will exercise self-discipline in their respect for self, staff, fellow students, school

property and the property of others. They will take full responsibility for their own actions and

strive to live up to the expectations of the Catholic Code of Conduct and all other

board/school/class expectations, policies and procedures. They will work towards achieving a

virtuous lifestyle, high standards of personal conduct and academic performance, active

participation in leadership and service initiatives, concern for the environment, and

compassion for those in need.

Students fulfill these responsibilities by:

• coming to school prepared, on time, ready to learn, and properly attired;

• striving for excellence in personal conduct and academic performance;

• cultivating opportunities to develop talents and strengthen personal leadership skills;

• demonstrating courteous behaviour to all;

• contributing to an inclusive school culture by advocating that no student be excluded;

• defending the rights of fellow students by reporting and/or safely intervening when the

rights of others are threatened or violated;

• cultivating a virtuous life through a commitment to gospel values and service to others;

• participating respectfully in the faith life and liturgical practices of the school community

(sacraments, retreats, religion curriculum, etc);

• participating in school programs related to wise stewardship of resources (e.g. reduce,

reuse, recycle);

• accepting school discipline as a tool for personal growth, and as an extension of the

responsibilities that would be exercised by a kind, firm and judicious parent;

Policy Statement

In light of its Mission Statement, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is committed to

the implementation in every school of a Catholic Code of Conduct that clearly reflects the

need to provide a safe, caring, inclusive and healthy Catholic school community. All

community members will work together to develop spiritually, intellectually, physically,

socially, and emotionally by aspiring to the highest possible standards of Catholic behaviour,

in living out the gospel values, and by fostering a Catholic culture of respect, responsibility

and concern for the common good.

• refraining from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others;

and

• acknowledging that school safety is a shared responsibility that depends on student

commitment and involvement.

Bullyin g Defin itio n

Bullying is typically a form of repeated, persistent, and aggressive behaviour directed at a

person or group that is meant to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or

harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying happens where

there is a real or perceived power imbalance. Ministry of Education PPM No.144

Policy Man date

All schools must have a Safe Schools Action Team (or other committee concerned with safe

schools) to promote school safety and prevent bullying.

“Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger, abounding in kindness.” (Psalm 145:8)

Policy Statement

In recognizing that “bullying adversely affects the student’s ability to learn, adversely affects

healthy relationships and school climate, and adversely affects the school’s ability to educate

its students” (PPM No. 144, Ministry of Education, p 3), SCDSB prohibits bullying in all its

forms, as a serious offence against the dignity of persons created in God’s image, and as an

affront to the integrity of Catholic learning communities. Thus, the board is committed to a

comprehensive whole-school approach to bullying prevention and response.

Progressive Discip lin e Defin ition

Progressive Discipline is a step-by-step process of supporting positive behaviours and

responding to and resolving a wide range of infractions and conflicts with appropriate

interventions and consequences. It helps to facilitate the renewal of relationships, and

to ensure new beginnings for designated students within a nurturing learning environment.

Progressive discipline exists at all times for all students. Progressive discipline includes

classroom management strategies and school-wide programs that teach pro-social

skills, provides support for vulnerable students, promotes virtue

Policy Statem en t

SCDSB supports the comprehensive and consistent use of a progressive discipline

approach, and shall reflect the model of Christian discipleship, in its implementation of the

Catholic Code of Conduct.

Page 18: St. Anne Catholic School Council Meeting · PDF fileThe sidewalk petition went to the Greater Sudbury City Council and was deferred ... Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pray for us. St. Anne,

When challenging behaviours occur, interventions are initiated to re-direct the student’s

behaviours and encourage him/her to make amends. Consequences to help the student

appreciate the seriousness of his/her actions are part of this educative process, along with

on-going supports to ensure that negative behaviours are replaced with positive ones. At

times, suspension or expulsion may be necessary as a just consequence and to protect the

safety of others. A student on suspension or expulsion will have an opportunity to continue

learning in an alternate setting. Upon return to a regular day school, the student will be

welcomed back with on-going support and monitoring.

Suspensio ns

A principal may consider whether to suspend a pupil if he or she believes that the pupil has

engaged in any of the following activities while at school, at a school-related activity, or in

other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on the school climate:

1. Uttering a threat to inflict serious bodily harm on another person;

2. Possessing alcohol, illegal and/or restricted drugs;

3. Being under the influence of alcohol, illegal and/or restricted drugs;

4. Swearing at a teacher or at another person in a position of authority;

5. Committing an act of vandalism that causes extensive damage to school property at the

pupil’s school or to property located on the premises of the pupil’s school;

6. Bullying;

7. Any act considered by the principal to be injurious to the moral tone of the school;

8. Any act considered by the principal to be injurious to the physical or mental well-being of

members of the school community; or

9. Any act considered by the principal to be contrary to the Catholic Code of Conduct.

A pupil may be suspended only once for an infraction and may be suspended for a minimum

of one (1) school day and a maximum of twenty (20) school days.

Expulsion s

A principal may consider recommending an expulsion of a pupil if he or she believes that the

pupil has engaged in any of the following activities while at school, at a school-related activity

or in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on the school

climate:

1. Possessing a weapon, including possessing a firearm;

2. Using a weapon to cause or to threaten bodily harm to another person;

3. Committing physical assault on another person that causes bodily harm requiring

treatment by a medical practitioner;

4. Committing sexual assault;

5. Activities engaged in by the pupil on or off school property that cause the pupil's continuing

presence in the school to create an unacceptable risk to the physical or mental well-being

of other person(s) in the school or Board;

Page 19: St. Anne Catholic School Council Meeting · PDF fileThe sidewalk petition went to the Greater Sudbury City Council and was deferred ... Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pray for us. St. Anne,

6. Trafficking in weapons, illegal and/or restricted drugs;

7. Committing robbery; giving alcohol to a minor;

8. An act considered by the principal to be significantly injurious to the moral tone of the

school and/or to the physical or mental well-being of others;

9. A pattern of behaviour that is so inappropriate that the pupil's continued presence is

injurious to the effective learning and/or working environment of others;

10. Activities engaged in by the pupil on or off school property that have caused extensive

damage to the property of the Board or to goods that are/were on Board property;

11. The pupil has demonstrated through a pattern of behaviour that s/he has not prospered

by the instruction available to him or her and that s/he is persistently resistant to making

changes in behaviour which would enable him or her to prosper; or

12. Any act considered by the principal to be a serious violation of the Catholic Code of

Conduct.

Mitig atin g Facto rs:

The following factors must be taken into account if they would mitigate the seriousness of the

activity for which suspension or expulsion is considered:

1. The pupil’s ability to control his/her behaviour;

2. The pupil’s ability to understand the foreseeable consequences of his/her behaviour;

3. Whether the pupil’s on-going presence creates an unacceptable risk to the safety of any

person;

4. The pupil’s history and age; and IEP considerations, if applicable;

5. Whether a progressive discipline approach has been used with the pupil;

6. Whether the activity was related to harassment;

7. How the suspension/expulsion would affect the pupil’s on-going education.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board aims to maintain a positive and safe environment in their schools for all students, staff, parents, and visitors. Any violence or harassment of any kind will be taken very seriously. Because of this, when a student's behaviour poses a serious threat to his or her safety or the safety of others, a Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) will be activated.

The protocol for the VTRA was developed by partners within the Greater City of Sudbury and is activated by the principal of each school when a student commits an act that may present a risk for their safety or the safety of others. A trained team with members from the school board, police, and community partners evaluates the importance of risks of behavior and puts measures in place to prevent any threatening acts. The partners will share information, advice and support, and plans will be developed to minimize the risk. In sharing personal information, each individual's right to privacy will be balanced with the need to ensure the safety of all.
