Pastor Dear Friends: In our Diocese, the Feast of The Ascension of the Lord is transferred and celebrated on a Sunday. Therefore we shall
not celebrate Ascension on Thursday May 25th; we shall celebrate it next Sunday May 28th, 2017. The Seventh Sunday of
Easter will not be celebrated. The Feast of The Ascension of the Lord commemorates Christ’s return to heaven forty
days after his Resurrection (the “forty days” correspond to the biblical symbolism of the number forty: a period of time sufficient
for the attainment of the desired purpose.) It is a holy day of obligation in the universal Church. The Ascension is the final
event of Jesus’ visible ministry on earth and may be regarded as the day on which Jesus, in his glorified body, took his seat
at the right hand of God. The Ascension may also be interpreted as an expression of the enduring relationship between
Jesus and the community he left behind. It was through the Ascension that the supremacy of Jesus over creation was
revealed; it was the Ascension, too, which made possible the sending of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Just as the Resurrec-
tion expressed the reality of the triumph of Jesus over death, revealing Jesus as the Risen Christ, so the Ascension assures
believers that Jesus is eternally present with God. After the Ascension, Jesus was no longer present among his
followers in a physical sense; paradoxically, the ascended Jesus is forever present in the world.
In the Scriptures, many ancient holy figures were said to be taken up to heaven, especially Enoch (Genesis 5:24) and Elijah
(2Kings 2:1-14). Later, other great figures joined them in being raised to heaven, such as Baruch, Ezra, and Moses. In the
Greek and Roman world, heroes as well as emperors renowned for their great deeds were taken to the heavens and
exalted as deities. Thus, ascension to the heavens came to be expected of holy and great persons; it indicated divine
approval of them as well as their accession to heavenly power. Jesus was raised not only to life but also to heaven (Luke
24:50-51; Acts 1:2-12). This act by God acclaims the victory of Jesus over his enemies as well as his enthronement at the
right hand of God (Acts 2:33-36; Hebrews 1:3-4). The Ascension of Jesus was first interpreted as God’s action on his
behalf, bestowing honor that cancelled the shame of the cross. Later it indicated Jesus’ accession to heavenly rule as Lord,
seated at God’s right hand. Finally, as the understanding of Jesus as a divine figure matured, Jesus was said to ascend of his
own power to the glory he originally had. Since the ancients imagined God in the “heavens,” seated on a throne, when
Jesus is brought into God’s presence, he must “ascend” to where God is. Christ in his human nature passes to the state of
glory with his Father and the Holy Spirit: The risen One enters the heavenly intimacy of God. This is signified by “the
cloud” (Acts 1:9), a biblical sign of the divine presence. The truth is that the real nature of the Ascension must of its very
nature always remain a mystery. It tries to put into words what is beyond words, to relate an experience that happened
only this one time and never to anyone else.
On this day, Jesus concludes his ministry, and the mission and ministry of the Church begins. He commissions his disciples
to establish his kingdom and pledges its fulfillment. And we are all called to this great hope. Jesus moves from earth
where his presence was a matter of fact to a presence with us that is a matter of faith. The Gospels of both
Luke and John give the impression that the resurrection, the ascension, and the giving of the Spirit on Pentecost all took
place on the same day. It wasn’t until more than three hundred years later that the Church began to celebrate the Feast of
the Ascension forty days after Easter, perhaps in part because of the importance of each feast. Ascension is not a
commemoration of a departure; it is a celebration of the living and lasting presence of him who at his birth
was called “Emmanuel” - “God with us.” The liturgy of the Ascension calls us to be bold witnesses to the passion,
death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus - witnesses, in other words, of Gospel joy to the world. We can’t just keep
looking up to heaven: We have a mission from Jesus. After the Ascension, there is a bit of earth with God in heaven and a
bit of heaven with us on earth. But we have work to do. We must stand on our own spiritual feet and do it. In that work,
we don’t walk alone, the Holy Spirit is with us. The Ascension is not an ending of Jesus’ presence on earth, but a constant
testimonial to the fact that Jesus lives. In the face of all the current difficulties of the Church, we who believe in Christ’s
Ascension must not just passively sit and wait. We must have an urgency in our waiting, an urgency which leads to active
commitment on our part to work for our hoped-for future. Let us remember the words of the Preface for the Ascension
Mass: Christ has passed beyond our sight, not to abandon us but to be our hope, and where he has gone, we hope
to follow. Something to think about: “The person who wants to do good knocks at the door; the person who loves finds the door open.”
May God bless your Easter Season with good things! Fr. Masabakhwa, R.

Beautification Project: St. Patrick has spent a significant amount of Bud Skalla’s
donation on much needed infrastructure and long-term
planning items. It’s time to turn our attention to
sprucing up the outside, showcasing the natural beauty
endowed by God and recognizing Mr. Skalla for his most
generous contribution. To that end, the parish council
would like to form a committee of parish volunteers to
plan/organize this beautification project which will
include the area in front of the church, the area that
was formerly the school, as well as a memorial for
Bud Skalla to be incorporated somewhere on the
premises. If you are interested in being a part of this
committee, please contact Chair-person, Pat Kocour, at
402-290-7093 or Michele in the parish office 712-642-
