THE BASILIAN JANUARY 2017

message from fr. panagiotis

Focusing on our Purpose in Life

This month, we will be entering a new year, and we also will be celebrating the Holy Theophany of our Lord. As we begin 2017, let us remember (or learn for the first time perhaps) what our purpose is in life by reflecting on the Feastday of Theophany.

The Feastday of Theophany is when Jesus Christ was baptized in the River Jordan by St. John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17). However, Theophany is not only when our Lord was baptized but also when God revealed Himself to humanity as Trinity. On Theophany, we learn that God is One in Three Persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All three Persons of the Godhead appeared at the same time at the baptism of Christ—immediately after the Lord was baptized, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descends on Christ and then the Father speaks.

Our Church teaches that God is not only a community of three Persons, but also a community of love. We know that God is love (1 John 4:8) and therefore the Father, Son and Holy Spirit only desire to serve and love each other. It is from their love for each other that we are created. Human beings are created from the love of God the Trinity.

Why is the revelation that God is three Persons so important and how do we learn of our purpose in life from it? Human beings are created by God in His image (Genesis 2:26). If we are made in God’s image, that means we are hard-wired to be communal beings like the Trinity. If the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are a community of love--serving each other and living for each other (and ultimately for us their creation!)--then our purpose in life is to love God and others. As St. Paul reminds us, “pursue love” (1 Corinthians 14:1) and “Let all that you do be done with love” (1 Corinthians 16:14).

This year my brothers and sisters, let us fulfill our purpose in life by pursuing love, by doing everything with love. What is love? “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up (not arrogant); does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-6). In other words, let us have more patience, kindness, and selflessness in our lives and less rudeness, selfishness, and arrogance. Easier said than done but if we take our purpose seriously of showing love in everything we do, we will have more joy, peace and love in our souls.

Let us remember that love is the criteria of whether or not we have had a successful day, month and year. How we speak to one another, making time for each other, serving each other—a kind word, a helping hand, a thoughtful gesture—all these are examples of our purpos e in life which is to love. Everything else takes a back seat to love. Loving God and loving each other--this is all that matters in life and all God cares about. If we do not have love “we are nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:2). Let us love God by connecting with Him daily through prayer, through Scripture reflection and how we treat each other. Let us love God by being active sacramentally through Communion and Confession. Let us love those in our life in the manner that St. Paul describes. If we do these things, difficult though it may be at times, we will be fulfilling our purpose in life and in doing so, we will experience great fulfillment as a result.

Happy New Year to you all!

With love in Christ,

Fr. Panagiotis

THE BASILIAN JANUARY 2017

As we close out the old year and start a new one, I want to thank all the members of the 2016 Parish Council for their dedication to this important ministry and their prayerful consideration and resolution of the many issue that came before us last year. I’m also grateful for spirit of collegiality and Christian love with which the Council approached its work. It has been an honor to serve on the Council. The returning members from last year’s Parish Council are Emily Clifford, Veronica Gatrousis, Ken Jochimsen, Kathy Kaplanis, Maria Karapanos, Lori Koulouris, Olga Osipova, and Alexandra Schoonover. We welcome new member Viviana Bandy, who was appointed in December to fill a vacancy on the Council; as well as the three new members elected last month: Sylvia Hanania, Tim

Wiesner, and Donna Vasiliou. Your 2017 Council is looking forward to a busy and spiritually fulfilling year serving St. Basil Parish. We’ll miss Doreen Bestolarides, Vasili Veziris and Greg Patterson, who are taking a break after several years of dedicated service. Thank you all for your wisdom, insight, and hard work on this ministry. We look forward to having you rejoin the council in the future.

Veronica Gatrousis

YOUTH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Hello Everyone!I am writing this right after the beautiful outpouring of love from everyone involved in the Nativity Program. I am so grateful to the teachers, children, parents, Eleni, Father Pete, and many others who shared their time and talent for the glory of our Lord. Under the leadership of Lindsay Wiezner, we had the darling children in their costumes and readers excited to take part in the telling of this miracle. There was even a Manger complete with hay! The Choir and the Kalanda singers all worked to make a beautiful day for everyone. Thank you to Vicki and Maria.

We now look forward to the New Year, beginning with the feast day of Saint Basil. I wish a healthy and happy New Year to everyone.

Sunday school instruction resumes January 8, 2017.

With Love in Christ,

Lori Koulouris

FAMILY & COMMUNITY NEWS

The list of words used to describe this “living saint” would be exhaustive. Our community is heartbroken at our great loss. Sara was a constant presence in our church life. Everything reminds us of her. The kitchen was her domain, and her essence is present whenever we enter it.

Sara was a quiet, loving, and non-judgmental lady who did not boast of her great accomplishments, kindnesses, and contributions to many worthy causes. She was a fantastic mother, loving “yiayia”, and loyal and great friend. Sara did everything with love and deep devotion to her God and the Orthodox faith.

Along with her beloved family, we -- her St. Basil family -- can only say:

We miss you so much, and we shall never forget you. May your memory be eternal!

PRAYERS FOR HEALTH and RECOVERY May our Lord grant them health and strength

Welcome to our newly-Chrismated Orthodox ChristiansJessica Emory and Sarah Mimilis. Jessica’s Chrismated name is Maria. Services were held on Saturday morning, December 24. Litsa Mandarakas sponsored Jessica and Dina Panos sponsored Sarah. God bless them all!

Deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of our beloved Kathy Piazza, This wonderful woman sang in the choir, belonged to Philoptochos, and was a Daughter of Penelope. She served our parish and community faithfully. She will be missed. May her memory be eternal!

Tragically, our St. Basil community (and beyond) has suffered another great loss at the sudden departure of our beloved Kathy Walton. Kathy was a pillar of our community. She was there for anyone who needed help. She was devoted to her church, Philoptochos, family, and friends. Like Sara Glaros and Kathy Piazza, she will be sorely missed. Our Parish is heartbroken at the loss of these dedicated servants of God. There is no doubt they are with our Lord this very day. Condolences and love to Steven and Nicholas. My her memory be eternal!

Sophia was a joy to be with. She adores older folks, and they were delighted to see her.
