REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 AUGUST 7, 2016

My Brothers and Sisters,

On Tuesday, July 26th I was sitting at my desk preparing to put to paper my thoughts on our scripture readings for this 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time. It was then that a close family member came in and asked if I had heard about the elderly priest who had been killed in France by terrorists while celebrating morning Mass. His name was the Rev. Jacques Hamel. I was stunned and deeply saddened and I must admit, I began to cry. Our Catholic Church had another martyr.

When the tears stopped, another and extremely difficult feeling came over me. It was if I had stepped back in time to the days when I was Romi, the Roman Centurion, a soldier. I was angry, filled with a desire for revenge. My thought was, “hurt my family (my brother in Christ) I will hurt you.” Then the anger and thoughts of revenge passed

and I began to think that perhaps out of this terrible act we might ask ourselves how should we respond?

Almost 15 years ago responding to the events of September 11, 2001 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published a Pas-toral message entitled “Living with Faith and Hope.” In that message the Bishops had this to say: “Our faith teaches us about good and evil, free will and responsibility! Jesus’ life, teaching, death and resurrection show us the meaning of love and justice in a broken world. Sacred Scripture and traditional ethical principles define what it means to make peace. They provide moral guidance on how the world should respond justly to terrorism in order to reestablish peace and order.”

The Bishops went on “it is wrong to use religion as a cover for political, economic or ideological causes. It compounds the wrong when extremists of any religious tradition distort (my emphasis) their professed faith in order to justify violence and hatred. People of all faiths must be united in the conviction that terrorism in the name of religion profanes religion. Above all, we need to turn to God and to one an-other in hope. Hope assures us that, with God’s grace, we will see our way through what now seems such a daunting challenge. For peacemakers, hope is the indispensable virtue.”

On the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11, Archbishop Timothy Dolan wrote that in recalling the events of 9/11, we remember how our nation re-sponded. “We turned to prayer, and then turned to one another to offer help and support. Hands were folded in prayer and opened in service…” Now as then we need to always reject hatred and resist terrorism. Our greatest resource in times such as these is faith.

In closing I would like to quote the words of Archbishop Dominque Lebrun of Rouen, Archbishop of Fr . Hamel’s diocese as he left Poland and the World Youth Day celebration to return home. The message was for the young people there, but is appropriate for all of us. “The Catholic Church has only prayer and brotherhood among men as its weapons…I leave here hundreds of young who are truly the future of humanity. I ask them not give in to the violence, and to become apostles of the civilization of love.”

In True Peace and Love, Faithful

VINCENTIANCORNERNon-perishable food items such as peanut butter, cereal, soup, in addition to all canned meats, fruits, vegetables and beans are a welcome addition to the food bags we deliver to our clients throughout the city of Riverside. Why not start a family tradi-tion to bring an item to Mass with you each week and have your family or children bring it to the altar with the other gifts during offertory? If you would prefer not to place it on the al-tar, the items may be placed in the metal bins at the rear and side doors of the church. Please do not deposit perishable items in these bins. All perishable items may be taken to the OLPH food bank at the corner of Streeter and Central. The food bank is open 9-11:30am Monday through Friday and will en-sure that perishable items are distributed before they spoil. Thank you for your prayers and your generous support of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

YearofMercy:PilgrimageofPrayerTHELABYRINTHPRAYERWALKAUGUST13,2016DuringtheYearofMercy,weareofferingtheop-portunitytowalktheLabyrinthaspartofyourpilgrimageofprayer. The Labyrinth is modeled from the one in the nave of the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is an eleven circuit labyrinth from our mystical past. The labyrinth has three paths, the going in represents the Path of Letting Go, the Center is the second called the Path of Enlight-enment and also a meditation on Creation, the third is the way out, the Path of Union. The labyrinth repre-sents our life's journey to God and it is through our life that we come to know God. An ancient archetype, the labyrinth has found re-newed use in today's world and many who walk it ind it to be a very good tool for meditation. Marianne Heames will be available during the walk times for a short presentation and to offer guidance for those who would like it.

JUBILEEYEAROFMERCYAugust7,2016—NineteenthSundayinOrdinaryTime Last Sunday’s “Parable of the rich fool” delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing—now: “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to ind. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also illed with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus’ warn-ing not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside “the Master’s house” will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus’ own mercy in the compassion of Jesus’ modern-day disciples?

No debemos tener miedo.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
