The funding provided to St. Claire HealthCare under this grant program is welcome news and will be put to good use in helping to fight the opioid epidemic,” said Senator McConnell. “Northeast Kentucky continues to confront the opioid epidemic, with many counties experiencing alarmingly high drug-overdose rates. St. Claire HealthCare will use this funding to expand its current medication-assisted treatment services and implement these services in other rural health clinics.” “St. Claire HealthCare is very appreciative of any assistance to help fight opioid use disorders,” said Donald H. Lloyd, II, St. Claire HealthCare President and CEO. “The growing and unprecedented opioid epidemic is a critical issue for public health and medical care throughout the country. As providers of health care, we owe it to our patients and the communities we serve to be the gatekeepers of pain medicine prescriptions and to facilitate access to treatment for addictions.” “St. Claire HealthCare is thrilled to receive this award, as it allows us to increase the number of access points where Northeastern Kentuckians with an opioid use disorder can receive evidence-based care,” said David A. Gross, St. Claire’s administrative director for education and research, who will administer the project. “Our region continues to feel the effects of the opioid epidemic, but we firmly believe that expanding medication-assisted treatment services at our Frenchburg Family Medicine clinic and implementing MAT at our Olive Hill, Owingsville, and Sandy Hook sites will aid in the recovery of those battling opioid addiction. Senator McConnell’s support was instrumental to St. Claire being selected for this funding and we look forward to continued collaborations with his office in our future efforts to combat the opioid epidemic.”

EDie software delivers patient information when, where, and how it’s needed to save lives.St. Claire HealthCare emergency room physicians now have new, state-of-the-art software that helps them obtain their patient’s past medical history from other health care systems which allow them to make faster, more informed treatment decisions. The software called EDie, Emergency Department Information Exchange, was developed by Salt Lake City-based Collective Medical Technologies and is being provided at no cost to St. Claire HealthCare by the Kentucky Hospital Association thanks to a $250,000 grant from the Anthem Foundation.

“Until now, when a patient came into our Emergency Room, we didn’t have the time or data access needed for a thorough medical history review if medical care had taken place in medical facilities outside of St. Claire HealthCare’s health system,” said Philip C. Overall, St. Claire Emergency Services Medical Director. “We often had to make treatment decisions in the moment based on limited information.”

EDie collects data from thousands of hospitals, urgent treatment clinics, outpatient clinics, and health plans. It then packages needed data for emergency situations and delivers critical information to the emergency physician in real time, the instant it’s needed. In one concise report, St. Claire emergency providers can see patient history, visit summaries, medical providers, security events, and even care recommendations like preferred language and drug allergies.

Dr. Overall says EDie consolidates information from multiple sources that would take hours to obtain otherwise, and lets emergency physicians make faster, more informed clinical decisions.

“Information is a powerful tool in medicine, especially in emergency medicine, when life and death decisions must be made quickly,” said Dr. Overall.

The Kentucky Hospital Association is making EDie software available to hospitals across the commonwealth.

“One particularly powerful application of this technology is in fighting Kentucky’s opioid epidemic,” explained KHA President Nancy Galvagni. “Emergency room hopping’ is a serious obstacle in helping people suffering from addiction, and this software can tell a treating physician if the patient has a history of ER visits for pain treatment. EDie can be the difference between enabling addiction and treating it.”

The Anthem Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky, awarded the Kentucky Hospital Association this $250,000 grant as part of the organization’s efforts to create a more effective health care system.

“At Anthem, our mission is to simplify health care and improve lives and communities. Breaking down information silos is a critical component of achieving that goal,” said Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky President Kennan Wethington. “We’re incredibly proud of this exciting partnership because it will put EDie technology in the hands of more physicians as more and more forward-thinking hospitals choose to participate.”

Rebecca Downs – LPNFor a lot people the hospital represents something bad, that either you or someone you know is sick and in need of medical intervention. This was true for one of our patients at St. Claire Family Medicine in Owingsville, where a regular office visit turned into a gateway for a hospital admission. After the patient learned that he needed to be seen in the Emergency Department for additional testing, he was wrapped in fear and totally resistant to the idea and unfamiliarity of it all. But, in this moment Rebecca Downs, who the patient identifies as HIS nurse, stepped up to the plate. Not only did she work diligently to calm his fears and convince him of the importance but she actually drove to Morehead and accompanied him during his ER visit. Rebecca’s actions demonstrated her commitment and compassion which are the core values of our organization.

SCH Staff Receive Recognition with Spirit of St. Claire AwardSubmitted by McKenna SpenceCongratulations to Rebecca Downs, LPN (left), and Stacey Triplett, RT, ROC, ARDMS (right), who recently received the Spirit of St. Claire Award. Thank you for all that you do and for representing what we consider to be the Spirit of St. Claire.

Stacy Triplett – RT, ROC, ARDMSGetting an ultrasound can cause anxiety, especially for children, as you must remain still throughout the exam. Even more for our patients with congenital amoralities who are receiving ultrasounds on the heart. Stacey not only consistently performs quality examinations but she works diligently to treat patients with dignity and respect while also calming fears and keeping them relaxed for the duration of the exam.Patients, family members, and providers alike have commended Stacey on her commitment to consistent quality exams and excellent customer service. One provider even noted that she feels Stacey is one of the best in the state in regards to pediatric echoes. We recognize Stacey as a glowing example of commitment and quality which are the foundation of what we do.

Have you witnessed a staff member or volunteer going above and beyond to care for our patients and visitors? You can nominate them for a Spirit of St. Claire Award by completing the online nomination form at schstaff.org or by emailing [email protected].

Celebrating Our

St. Claire HealthCare recently received the Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) Quality Award in the

100 to 250 Beds Category at the KHA Awards Luncheon on May 10, as part of the 90th Annual KHA

Convention in Lexington.

The KHA Quality Award is presented to honor hospital leadership and innovation in quality, safety, and

commitment to patient care. Hospitals presented with this honor demonstrate a dedication to patient safety

as well as persistence to going above and beyond what is expected for providing quality care.

At this year’s convention, St. Claire HealthCare submitted an innovative change project titled,

"Implementing a Patient-Centered Care Model to Reduce Opioid Usage." The project highlighted St. Claire

HealthCare’s implementation of a shared vision by physicians and leaders alike to impact the opioid crisis

and to improve patient outcomes. To compliment this St. Claire HealthCare physicians Will Melahn, MD,

Jacob Perry, MD, John Sanders, MD, and Phillip Overall, MD, presented as a panel at KHA's annual

convention.

“I am so proud of our medical staff for tackling this long-term issue affecting our community, patients,

families, providers, and staff,” says Linda Fultz, St. Claire HealthCare Vice President of Quality and

Resource Management. “Their decision to begin and continue this journey is one example of what we can

achieve together through quality improvement initiatives and adopting clinical best practice.”

Congratulations to Shea Lambirth, MD (left), Eric DeAtly (center), Polly Carroll, PCA (right), and Keisha Owens, RN (not pictured), who recently received the Spirit of St. Claire Award. Thank you for all you do and for representing what we consider to be the Spirit of St. Claire.

Shea Lambirth, MD - For many of our patients, the financial implications associated with their care may cause them to forgo recommended treatment and decline to pick up prescriptions because of the price tags. This was almost the case for one of our patients who began crying when he learned his medications were more than he could afford. In an act of great compassion, Shea Lambirth, MD, went to the pharmacy and paid the entirety of his bill. With shock, awe, and teary eyes the nursing staff nominated Dr. Lambirth for the Spirit of St. Claire Award for her compassion and deep connection to our mission.

Eric DeAtly, Facilities Management - Following a routine discharge from the hospital, one of our patients found that their car wouldn't start. Without hesitation, Eric DeAtly, a member of our facilities team, grabbed a pair of jumper cables and worked diligently to ensure that this patient would get to their home in a timely manner. At the same time, Eric was asked by a different individual if he could assist in getting their immobile father into the vehicle. In true Eric fashion, he didn’t hesitate to carefully lift the patient into their personal vehicle. Thank you for being a glowing example of compassion and commitment.

Polly Carroll, PCA & Keisha Owens RN, 3N - During a routine discharge, Polly Carroll, PCA, was in a patient's room when their ride arrived. She felt uneasy about the safety of the situation as the driver appeared to be under the influence. Polly discreetly let her charge nurse, Keisha Owens, RN, know that she was not comfortable with the situation. Keisha immediately intervened and moved the situation up the chain of command. Once all the appropriate parties were notified, the patient was updated that our goal was to keep her as safe as possible and we would be providing a safer transport through case management. During a very sensitive situation for everyone involved, these two handled the issue with tact and with grace while showing a strong commitment to safety and compassion toward their patient.

Have you witnessed a staff member or volunteer going above and beyond to care for our patients and visitors?

Volunteers Receive Service Award from President Donald J. TrumpSeveral SCH volunteers were recently honored during the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) summer picnic including five who received a very special distinction from the Corporation for National & Community Service. Luther Adams, Bonnie Bennett, Brenda Bennett, Donna Eggett, and Leanna Staggs were presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Each of these individuals received gold distinction which requires a minimum of 500 volunteer hours during the fiscal year.

The President’s Service Award was established in 2003 to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action too.

Each recipient received a lapel pin, personalized certificate of achievement, and a signed letter from the President of the United States Donald J. Trump. In part, the letter read, “One of our Nation’s greatest strengths remains the compassion of our everyday citizens, who give so willingly of themselves and their lives for the benefit of others. Each generation of hardworking and kindhearted volunteers helps to write a new chapter of American greatness, and our Nation is proud for your commitment to this honorable tradition.”

During the RSVP summer picnic, Years of Volunteer Service Pins were awarded to Ron Fiel (10 years), Siu Lim (10 years), and Mary Camille Dummer (5 years). Veteran volunteers Luther Adams and Ronnie Brooks also were presented with award pins in recognition of their service.

Please join us in thanking all of our wonderful volunteers for the countless random acts of kindness to our patients, families, and staff members. The compassion our volunteers show to the people of our region is truly an inspiration.

Interested in joining St. Claire HealthCare's amazing team of volunteers? Contact Regina Thompson at 606.783.6517 or [email protected] to learn more.
