Niamh Murray, Knocklyon Parish Choir, and Joe Johnston's Recorder School, performing with Knocklyon Concert Band

at last year's Christmas Concert. (Nice hats guys!!!)

WHAT IS A CONCERT BAND? A concert bcincl is usually comprised of between 30 and 40 musicians divided into three distinct sections, - woodwind, brass and percussion. Woodwind instruments include flute, clarinet and saxophone. The Brass section includes trumpet, trombone, euphonium and tuba, while Percuss-ion includes instruments such as bass drum, side drum, xylophone and cymbals.

Now that the Knocklyon Concert Band has passed . its first anniversary it seems appropriate to recap on its ach ievements to date and outl ine its p lans for the future. The band started in January 1998 with 77 mem-bers, 47 in the full brass band and 30 in the recorder section. The band is under the baton of Robert Chester as Musical Director while Joe Johnston heads up the recorder section.

As you can imagine the first year in existence for such a mammoth undertaking can be a difficult one. The first obstacle faced was, as ever, money. The parents of members purchased most of the smaller instruments at a cost of £300 - £400 each, but some of the larger ones (which can cost in the region of £1000 each) were purchased by the band. (We are still miss-

ing some of the larger, more expensive items having had to cut our cloth to suit our purse.) The next task was to take a group of musically inclined young people and fo rm them into a cohesive unit. The first few months were taken up with musical tuition and later band practice where the different instruments were brought together for the first time. A total of over 1500 hours of tuition, backed up with over 6000 hours of practice, took the band to its first performance in front of an audience of family members in late May and eventual ly to its public debut in December '98 in Firhouse Community College. For the Christmas Con-cert the band were joined by The Parish Choir, the Recorder School and Niamh Murray.

The successful conclusion to its first year will act as a springboard for the next stage of the band's develop-ment. The plans for the coming year include:

Competing in the Junior Band Championships.

Individual members taking musical exams.

Extension of the existing range of musical instruments, Timpany, French Horns, Xylophones etc.

Establishment of a junior concert band to feed new talent into the senior band over time.

Al ready a small n u m b e r of paren ts have come together to form a fundraising group to make all of this possible. The parents involved are Declan Murray, Aubrey Styles and Tim Mooney, and they will be approaching local businesses in the coming weeks to elicit their support for sponsorship for the purchase of new instruments. The Knocklyon Concert Band enjoys c o n s i d e r a b l e pub l ic goodwi l l a f t e r its w o n d e r f u l achievements in only twelve months. The aim of the parents is to capi ta l ise on this as well as offer ing people and business concerns the opportunity to con-tribute to a wealth of musical talent which is rapidly growing in our midst . Membersh ip of the Patrons Society costs £100 per year. All sponsors and patrons will be fully accredited at any future concerts or other performances of the band.

If you feel you can help in any way please contact the P.R.O. Aubrey Styles at 10 Templeroan Meadows (4934408).

L.-R.: Maureen Cahalin, Betty Fitzpatrick and Padraig Cullinane enjoying the Anniversary celebrations

Almost 180 par ishioners "boogied" the night away on Saturday 30th January while celebra-ting the 10th birthday of our Community Centre.

The excellent four course meal was provided by caterers and the live music came from "Kick the Can". We heard that a good night was had by all and those who were lucky went home with a spot prize.

Spring is upon us already, hopefully the beautiful crisp sunny day we had on February 1st is a sign of things to come. Like the children who are coming out to play again in the brighter, milder afternoons, so KAPE has got its first (0-6 yrs) parenting course of the year up and running.

We hope to run an evening parenting course, focusing on the 7-12 age group around Easter time. If you are inter-ested in participating, please ring Ann on 4939424, or Mary on 4942130.

If you would like a taste of what's involved in a parenting course, or if you have already taken a course and would like a refresher, or a chance to simply share your experi-ences with other parents, here is a date for your diary;

PARENTING WORKSHOP on Listening to your Child

Wednesday 3rd March, 10 a.m. - 12 noon lona Room. Creche Provided.

JACK BEGLEY We would like to thank all who sympathised with us on Jack's recent sudden passing.

A special thanks to Fr David for all his kindness, help and guidance, Fr Staunton and all the priests. Our thanks also to Dr Peter Roth, Jean Roth and John Murphy who have shown tremendous care and support from the very beginning, all our neighbours and fr iends who came to the house and helped so wonderfully and everyone who attended the removal and funeral mass. Thanks to Tony Heavey and Kevin Colleran who organised traffic control for the funeral.

We would also like to thank the Folk Group (past and present), all who sang or read, especially Ruth Kelly, Lisa Kelly and John Whelan. Their contribution to the Funeral Mass made it a very special celebration of Jack's life - it meant a lot to us as a family and will always be a cherished memory.

All the Mass cards, flowers and letters have been a great comfort to us and the continued love and support we are receiving will help us through this very sad and difficult time. We hope Jack's spirit and love of life will live on in us and in the community.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.

COLAISTE EANNA STUDENTS TO REPRESENT IRELAND

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! The Colaiste Eanna students senior basketball team are once again representing Ireland at the International Schools' Federation Basket-ball Tournament. This year the tournament is being held in Jerusalem from 5th to 12th May. The tournament is a bi-annual event and this is the third time in succession that Colaiste Eanna has the honour of representing Ireland. Four of the team are from Knocklyon, Ciaran Ahearne (Knockaire), Mark Coleman (Knocklyon Green), Karl Traynor (Knockfield Manor) and Daniel Bates (Glenvara).

Needless to say, participating in such an event requires a lot of money, £9000 to be exact. The Department of Sport is contributing £2000 and the balance must be raised by the school through the Parents' Basketball Fundraising Committee which has been specially set up for the purpose.

The Committee has organised one major fundraising venture which it hopes will help raise the necessary cash. A race night has been arranged for Shelbourne Park on the 14th April 1999. You can help in any of the following ways: • Sponsor a race for £500 or join in sponsorship with someone else. • Nominate a dog for £20. • Take out an advertisement in the race programme - full page

£100, half page £50.

If you are in business and are in a position to give support or if you can help in any way, the school would love to hear from you. You can contact the school at 4931767 or Michael Coleman at 4935295.

V r w CONNECT ^^Jr E Promotes Awareness of

i Alcohol and Drug Problems

• "WAKE UP"! These words are not just a summons from sleep or daydream. More importantly they can be a challenge to face a reality we have been ignoring or denying.

In one of his evergreen songs, Sinatra sings "Use your mentality! Wake up to reality"! The need to do this in the area of drug and alcohol abuse is acute.

The call to wake up to the reality of widespread and dangerous addictions falls largely on deaf ears. The problem can be on our doorstep or even inside our threshold while we remain gloriously unaware. Denial? Maybe! Ignorance? Probably! But an ignorance we owe ourse lves , our f ami l i e s , our c o m m u n i t y to overcome. We need, as the current phrase goes, to "get real"!

Parents forced to face the reality of addiction in a young son or daughter have mostly said at an earlier stage what so many other parents are currently saying and believing: "I know my son (my daughter)! I know he (she) would never ...!

• ADDICTS ALL!? Addiction is a widespread phenomenon. Universal perhaps! In one way or another we are all addicted to something. To pubs or to persons! To golf or to gossip! To sex or to shopping! To computers or to Coronation Street! All addictions are dangerous: they disturb priorities and distort life. But addictions to drug or alcohol are utterly destructive; they are terminal of life and of quality of life.

All addictions -are opposed to the First Command- • ment, placing as they do false gods before the only true God.

The following 4 pages are intended to connect YOU with the background to, and Programme for Drug/Alcohol Awareness Week 1999, and encourage your continued interest in this subject.

• LENT Lent is here! Let our slogan be "Wake Up, Face Up to your addiction"! This year, let that be the way we "repent of our sins"! For addictions are original sin, alive and kicking! Conquering them is Conversion!

Addictions by their nature are deep rooted and not easily dislodged. So there are no quick-fix solutions.

Much more than good resolutions are required. The Community needs to mobilise, so as • to learn how to identify signs of incipient addictions

and abuse • to understand how to communicate with those affected • to take practical steps towards appropriate confron-

tation • to know where to go for support and therapy.

• CONNECT Connect is our local Knocklyon group, set up two years ago to promote and facilitate awareness and support. "Wake Up Week" is planned and organised by Connect to further this aim.

Connect is asking you for time and energy and commitment, and at the Public Meeting on February 24th will spell out ways in which you can become involved.

The adults, who have seen the full findings of the 6th Class survey - summary of which is published in these pages, with the full report to be made available later -have been shocked at how much our pre-teen children know and the degree of their experience. There is no room for complacency or postponement, as children obviously are at risk from a very young age.

Yes, indeed, it's high time for us all to wake up, face up and get moving!

Fr. David

Members of the Connect Committee recently carried out a survey on Drugs and Alcohol awareness among the 6th class pupils (11/12 year olds)

in St. Colmcil le's School. Listed below are some of the results. (Full survey results will be available at the Open Meeting on Wednesday February 24th.)

Out of 160 pupils, who took part in the survey: • 67 said they had smoked (at least once)

• 126 said they had taken alcohol (at least once) • 68 said they had been bullied

• 13 said they had been offered drugs • 68 said they considered drugs were easily available in the area

^ Is there cause for concern in our parish?

A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE RUTLAND CENTRE

We welcome enormously the initiative and support of the Connect Committee in organising this Awareness Week.

Alcohol and drug use is on the increase especially amongst young people and more and more people are becoming addicted. At least 10% of those who drink and take drugs become addicted - this is no different in your Parish!

The problem is especially worrying in regard to young people who are now taking drugs and alcohol at a much earlier age. Few know the real consequences of such use and most are unaware of how quickly addiction happens. We are in an age where people want to live with the least amount of pain, and the greatest amount of pleasure - the extent to which we use alcohol and drugs to achieve this can quickly lead to addiction.

Addiction affects the individual's physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health and consequently has a serious effect on family life. This Awareness Week affords all of you an opportunity to learn more so that with increased awareness you can contribute to the health and well being of yourself, your family and your community.

It costs nothing to learn but costs a lot to pick up the pieces of broken lives through addiction - awareness can help to pre-vent the problem from getting worse. Come to the events of the week and discover that awareness can be your best friend!

Maura Russell M.A. C.Q.S.W., Director, Rutland Centre Ltd.

HOW THE J . L. 0 . CAN HELP One of the resources available to this community, in dealing with young people who may have a problem with Alcohol/Drugs is the Juvenile Liaison Officer (J.L.O.). Below Liam Nicholson explains his role.

"As a member of An Garda Siochana attached to Tallaght Garda Station, part of my job consists of dealing with people under 18 years of age who commit a crime or an offence which could see them being brought to Court. If they are suitable, they may be included in the Juvenile Diversion Programme, instead of going to Court. This has many advantages but the most obvious one is that the young person does not get a criminal conviction. It is then my aim to try and keep these people out of trouble.

Another aspect of my role is to go to schools, clubs and any where that I can have an impact on young people. I have spoken to parents with a view to helping them understand what is happening in their areas. This, I feel, helps them guide their children because they know more about what is going on and the possible dangers in their own community.

With regard to the Knocklyon area, I know that there is a problem in relation to underage drinking. This is happening in the green areas, the School and Church area, and generally anywhere young people are gathering. It seems to be that those involved are getting younger and younger. This inevitably leads to trouble. Also there are a lot of young people smoking Cannabis. I feel that they don ' t understand exactly what the consequences are.

Because of this situation I welcome the initiative of the Knocklyon Drug Awareness Group (Connect) in trying to highlight the dangers of drug abuse. The more information people have about the consequences of Drug & Alcohol abuse, the better they are prepared to cope with problems that might arise. I would urge people to attend the series of talks that are organised f rom 21st February so as to inform yourselves of what exactly is happening and how you can help your children.

The work I do is confidential and if any parent is having trouble with a teenager and feels that I might be able to help in some way, you may contact me, by leaving a message, at Tallaght Garda Station, Tel. No. 451 1333 or Rathfarnham Garda Station, 493 1211."

Liam Nicholson, J.L.O.

S C H O O L N E W S JUNIOR I SENIOR

Dear Parents, All parents should have met their child's teacher by now. Collaboration between parents and teachers is essential if all aspects of the children's development - physical, emotional, intellectual, moral, social and spiritual are to be properly looked after. There is a need for careful monitoring and regular contact, mutual respect, appreciation and support. Your children should be happy in school, otherwise effective learning will not take place. Please feel free to call should you be concerned in any way.

• S p o r t s The Second Class Indoor Soccer League is now into its 7th week and

teams are battling hard for the Top 4 play off positions. Things are tight at the top and hopefully Arsenal, Ireland and Lions will be catching up in the remaining weeks. Get well soon to Dublin's Shauna Cannon who suffered an ankle injury some time back and will be hoping that her team survive without her until she's recovered.

Unfortunately we learnt that the Basketball Coaching Scheme at the Arena has not selected us for this term's programme but we're optimistic about being back on court after Easter for Term 3.

• C o m p u t e r C lasses Beginners and Second Phase classes are now in progress and will

continue for five weeks. A new series of courses will begin immediately after Easter. Be sure and register on time to avoid disappointment. All details from 4947422/4947084.

• NEW ENTRANTS TO JUNIOR INFANTS SEPTEMBER '99

Parents should have confirmed by now that their child is on our register. A letter will be sent by the end of March if a place is being offered.

THE FRIDAY' BEAVER GROUP at their Christmas Carol Service

St. Colmcille's Parents' Association The Committee was delighted at the response to our Open Night, held last month. Parents were invited to meet the Principals of local Post-Primary Schools in an effort to help them choose a secondary school for their children. We hope that all who attended found the event informative and worthwhile and we would like to say a big thank you to all the Principals/Representatives involved.

In December the Committee presented a set of goalposts to the Senior School and we hope that many a happy P.E. session is spent practising goal-scoring skills!

Details of forthcoming lectures not yet finalised - keep checking schoolbags for further information.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR SCHEME (KNOCKLYON GIRLS SHOW THEIR SKILLS)

Many of our young transition year students have been busy with their

various ideas for the above scheme, and four girls from Our Lady's

School, Templeogue will go forward to the Dublin Final.

Deirdre Gavin (Knockaire), and Elizabeth Nolan (Dargle Wood), have

been spending their leisure time making wooden clocks. The various

designs are cut out of MDF wood using fretsaws. The battery parts and

numerals are bought in a specialised shop. The girls paint the clocks

themselves and to date their families and friends are the proud owners of

some of their attractive designs.

Meanwhile, Jane O'Neill from The Rookery, with a classmate Danielle '

Swaine, came up with the idea of growing shamrocks. Their packaged kit

comes with the materials required and illustrated instructions. The end

product reveals a fluffy little character with specs and shamrock hair. This

clever idea produces little faces of different shapes and come under the

title Sham-Rogues! Well done girls and good luck in the Dublin Final at the

end of February.

Readers are reminded that this year marks the SILVER JUBILEE

of the establishment of our Parish of St. Colmcille's.

We are currently planning a special Souvenir Edition of the "Knocklyon News"

to mark this momentous occasion. We would especially welcome old photos,

depicting local scenes or community events over the parish's history for inclusion in this

Souvenir Edition. Personal accounts of times past are also very welcome. All photos will be treated with great

care and returned after publication. Please address your photos or articles to "Knocklyon News", Carmelite Presbytery,

Idrone Avenue, Dublin 16. We look forward to hearing from you.
