PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

From Fr. Mike

PASTOR’S CORNER 1

I wish all of you a wonder-ful and blessed Christmas. There are many different ways of looking at what we are celebra ng. It is the birthday celebra-

on of Jesus our Savior. It is a reminder to us that Jesus is coming again. Through the years diverse cultures and tradi ons have a ached different meanings to this wonderful day. One of those tradi ons is that of Santa Claus, known also as St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, or St. Nick. St. Nicholas came from Myra. He was sainted Fourth Century Bishop in Asia Minor (Turkey). Santa's common portrayal in red robes with ermine trip and a floppy mi-ter reflects his historic origins as a bishop of the church. Would you ever have guessed that the red pointed hat that hangs over Santa’s ear was routed in the miter of a bish-op? Over the years, the myths a ributed to St. Nicholas

took on some of the charac-teris cs of Wodin, the Ger-manic God. Hence, he ac-quired reindeers, elves and headquarters in the North Pole. As patron of children, St. Nicholas is said to have brought them gi s on his feast. His feast is really cele-brated on December 6, how-ever, in many countries throughout the world this gi giving duty was transferred to Christmas day because Christ-mas day was the preferred

me for gi giving. Santa is not only enjoyed by Children, but especially by adults who delight in recalling the innocence of their own childhood. As adults we re-joice in discovering the real meaning of Christmas.

The right ques on to ask in not, “Is there really a Santa Claus?” but rather, “Does Santa Claus reveal a reality beyond himself?” Does he reveal to us a God who loves all of us as his li le children? If there is such a God, that is very good news! If this God really does love li le children so much so that he himself became a li le child at the very first Christmas, this is astonishingly good news! The story of Santa is not simply a harmless tale that slipped from paganism into the Christmas mid-winter fes-

val—it is at the heart of our Christmas celebra on. As Santa Claus gives gi s to children, so God gives gi s to us. God cared so much that he gave us the very best gi —his own son. This is our story. This is our faith. Where would we be without it?

Merry Christmas, Fr. Mike

4 YOUTH FORMATION

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did You Know? Help kids understand boundaries during the holi-days Christmas is a me for families, and extended aunts, uncles, and cousins gather to celebrate the season together. Your children should be comfort-able around their family members, but they should also know the limits of their comfort zones, and what to do if someone crosses a line – too many hugs and kisses, or inappropriate ckling. Your children should be comfortable saying “NO” when-ever things cross their lines, and they should know that you’ll back them up. For a copy of the VIR-TUS® ar cle “Know the Warning Signs: Just Where Is the Boundary Line?” email: [email protected].
