PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 PASTOR’S CORNER 1

My brother was ordained nine-teen years a er me. The main difference of his theological studies was a much greater emphasis on the Holy Trinity and the Holy Spirit. Scripture portrays the Holy Spirit playing a key role in the birth of the world, of Jesus and of the church. Years ago Dr. Floyd Judd prac-

ced medicine in rural Oklahoma. Many people in his area were poor and so he o en had to drive to their ramshackled homes to treat someone who was sick or injured. One day Dr. Judd became sick. He checked into a hospital. There he learned he had terminal cancer. His thoughts immediately turned to his young children. He decided to record a set of tapes that his chil-dren could listen to when they reached their teenage years. One of the tapes included the following: “Are you willing to get out of a warm bed on a cold night and drive 20 miles to see a sick person knowing that they can’t pay you and that they could wait un l morning to be treated? If you can answer yes to that ques on, you are ready to study medicine.” The Dr. Judd story has a striking resemblance to the story of Jesus in todays Gospel. Jesus too was close to death. His thoughts too turned to his dis-ciples. There was much more he

wanted to teach them. Jesus said, “I have much more to tell you but you cannot learn it now.” (John 16:12) And so he arranged to teach his disciples a er he was gone. He promised them the Holy Spirit say-ing, “When he comes, the Spirit of Truth, he will guide you to all truth.” Todays reading are intended to prepare us for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. We are familiar with the Fa-ther’s role in the divine plan. We are familiar with God the Son’s role. But we are a li le hazy about the role of the Holy Spirit. This is how the Bible describes the significant role of the Holy Spirit in the divine plan: Firstly, the Holy Spirit par-

cipated in the crea on of the world. The book of Genesis says that just before crea on “The pow-er (or the spirit) of God was moving over the waters. We can say that the Holy Spirit in a sense was preparing for the birth of the world. The second major event in which the spirit played a significant role in the birth of Jesus. Recall how the angel Gabriel re-sponded to Mary’s ques ons when Mary asked how she would con-ceive Jesus. The angel said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35)

In other words, the Holy Spirit hov-ered over Mary preparing her for the birth of Jesus. Just like the spirit hovered over the waters pre-paring them for the birth of the world. The third significant event occurs on Pentecost. The Acts of the Apostles de-scribes the Sprit as hovering over the disciples like wind. “Then, sud-denly fire descended upon them, and they were transformed into being fearless witnesses of Jesus.” And so the Bible portrays the Holy Spirit as playing a significant role in the birth of the Church on Pentecost. The Bible portrays the Holy Spir-it as being closely connected with the gi of Divine Life. Therefore the Spirits role in crea ng the word of life that unites every Chris an to Jesus, to one another and to the Holy Trinity itself. In the words of the Creed, the Spirit is called the “Giver of Life.” And so our prayer might be: Lord send us the Holy Spirit who will enable us to turn the hard and easy to our ad vantage so that everything that happens to us may bear us along the road to your kingdom.

HOMILY FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE GIVER OF LIFE

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Share in the Power This Sunday is two weeks before Pentecost, but already the readings prepare us for that feast. The first reading from Acts shows us the conversion of the Samaritans, thanks to Philip's preaching and curing the sick. He did this through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit makes Jesus present today, not just in the sacraments, but through us, his disciples. Jesus knew that a er his Resurrec on appearances, he would not be visible as a man. Instead, he would live in all of his followers through the power of the Holy Spirit. That's why he tells the disciples that the Spirit will be with them and in them. So confirma on, the laying on of hands (Acts 8:17), reminds us that when God lives in us, we share in the power of the Holy Spirit. In the second reading, Pe-ter gives us prac cal advice. First, he tells us to be ready to explain our hope in the Lord. That hope comes from our faith in the Resurrec on. When you hear that peo-ple saw and talked to Jesus a er he rose from the dead, then hear that anyone who follows Jesus will share in that resurrec on, you begin to have real hope. Next, Peter tells us to avoid sin, not because we won't be for-given again, but to show that we can live a life free from sin, selfishness, and hatred. Freedom from sin allows us to give a good example of how to live. Abandoning selfishness allows us to love others without coun ng the cost. When we are free from hatred, we are able to forgive others as we have been forgiven. As we live in Jesus and he in us, our happiness will a ract people to God. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. 4 YOUTH MINISTRY SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Avoiding gossip Our natural inclina on is to discuss concerns and problems with the people in our lives, but it can be easy for these discussions to slip into gossip. When gossip gets out of hand, it can damage reputa ons and create division and fear, without any discussion of how to resolve the problem. Teaching your children to avoid gossip and focus on truth starts at home—as always, parents lead by example. Try not to gossip about rumors or other people, and teach your children to seek solu ons when there is a problem rather than just talking about it. For a copy of the VIRTUS© ar cle “How Do I Avoid the Gossip Swirl?” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

When we give to the poor, God in-deed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and through us into the hearts of those who are poor.
