Sunday It is an opportunity to respond to the needy parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese. We need those who have pledged in the past, to do so immediately. In order

to meet this years assessment, we would appreciate people who haven’t given in the past to par cipate.

PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 SUPPORT TOGETHER IN MISSION 1

FIRST READING (GEN Chap 22) This chapter shows how complete was Abrahams obedience to God. SECOND READING (ROMAN 8:31-34) Since God is on our side, we can face anything GOSPEL (MK 9:2-10) The Transfiguration. On Mount Tabor three Apos-tles of Jesus get a glimpse of the Glory of Jesus as the Son of God. HOMILY The movie, “Dead Man Walking” tells the story of a nun, (Sr. Helen Prejean) as she accompa-nies a man, (Robert) during the months leading up to his execution in Louisiana. Noticing how Robert tries to win the confidence of one of the wardens, who was a kind of fatherly figure. Sr. Prejean Reflected: Robert never really had a father. (His father spent 27 of his 53 years in prison) It makes me think of my own father. It has to be one of life’s most pre-cious feeling to know that your Dad is proud of you. I was my Daddy’s scholar, his scribe who kept a travel diary on family vacations. He always had a special tone in his voice when he introduced me to his friends and colleagues: “And this is my little daughter, Helen” In the presence of strangers I would fall silent, standing close against him, my hand holding on tightly to his. Afterwards I would squeeze his hand tighter than ever and once more was filled with chatter and questions. A child can sail to the moon with that feeling of security from a father. This may be helpful in understanding what the Tabor experience was all about and meant for Jesus. It came at a very difficult time in his life, a time of uncertainty and fear. He was heading for Jerusalem where he sensed that the same fate await-ed him, was the same fate as all the prophets await-ed, in order to reflect and pray about as he climbed to the top of Mount Tabor. We don’t know exactly what happened on the mountain. But it seems that he had an intense experience of the presence of the Father. He heard those wonderful words. “This is my Beloved Son!”

On Mount Tabor Jesus felt comforted and affirmed. He knew that the Father was pleased with him and would give him the strength to face a dark and threatening future. With the Father on his side he could face anything. At times, life can become dark for all of us. “You’re good, but only if you are successful, or if you are popular!” But, there is still another small voice we need to pay attention to, we must recog-nize that we are God’s beloved children and try to live our lives by the light of this truth. Jean Vanier has set up communities all over the world for the Mentally Handicapped. He tells how in one of those communities there is a man called Pierre who is a mental handicap. One day someone asked Pierre, “Do you like praying?” “Yes,” he answered. “And what do you do when you pray?” The questioner asked. “I listen” an-swered Pierre. “And what does God say to you?” “He says, Pierre, you are my beloved son!” MOUNTAINS Jesus often went into the hills to pray. He preached his most famous sermon on a hill-top. (MT Chaps 5-7) He was transfigured on Mount Tabor, died on Mount Calvary and ascended to heaven from Mount Olives. It seems that he loved hills and mountains. Why was this? Was it that he grew up among the hills of Galilee? Or was it because heights enlarge our vi-sions and cause our spirit to soar. Lift us up strong Son of God that we may see further. Strengthen our faith that we may see beyond the horizon. And when the valley closes us in, Help us to remember the view from the hilltop.

4 SUPPORT TOGETHER IN MISSON

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wher-ever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. We have a special need for Adult white or black new socks. Please leave in rectory A n: Claudia. Please do not bring other clothing, the rectory does not have room to stores items.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Helping children problem solve through communica on O en the easiest response to complicated con-versa ons about sensi ve issues is a generic one, but these moments can be opportuni es to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being le out of social ac vi es, you might respond with a ques-

on: “Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for social ac vi es, instead of just giving them the cash or sugges ng how they might get the money, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solu-

on to an immediate situa on, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For com-plete VIRTUS® ar cle name and more communi-ca on ps, visit www.archla.org/protec ng.
