Welcome to St Donats Arts Centre

Spring is in the air and summer will soon be upon us, so as we look forward to the sunshineand late evenings, St Donats has programmed a lively and heady mix of events for you toenjoy in this idyllic location by the sea.

We open the season with The Budapest Café Orchestra, music from Eastern Europe; JuanMartin, a celebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar; Tarras hailing from the north of Englandand the borders of Scotland with their unique musical style. The ever popular Amigos returnwith an expansive repertoire which include, Trad Gypsy, Tex Mex, Calypso & Hungarian toname but a few; The “Best Live Act” Peatbog Faeries bring a true flavour of traditionalScottish music for one night only. Then stand to attention for the Siren Sisters, crooning tunesfrom the 40’s followed by one of the country’s leading jazz vocalists Jacqui Dankworth.

Something for the little ones with Stage Door 1’s Winnie the Pooh; our popular annual visit byGlobe Touring and “Hamlet”; St Donats Acoustic Festival with a showcase of over 34 Artists.Just to add to the summer mix, we have the ever popular jazz & cafe concerts, castle toursand of course our community classes and monthly exhibitions. Also for this Summer "Beyondthe Border- Wales International Storytelling Festival sets up camp on 29th June-1st July.

STEPPING OUT A Comedy By Richard Harris

Glam Dram the newly formed theatre groupof St Donats Arts Centre are proud to presenttheir first production – Stepping Out.

A comedy play concerns eight individualsfrom disparate backgrounds and with differingmotivations who attend the same weekly tapdancing class in a dingy North London churchhall. Despite the students at first treating theclasses as social occasions, and showing littleco-ordination, they later develop a level of

skill and cohesiveness. The dance routines are the background for the focus of the play,the relationship and interaction of differentpeople. Made popular from the film with Liza Minnelli and Julie Walters.

Fairies make mischief in the Athenian woods, mixing uptwo couples and pairing the fairy queen with one of the‘Rude Mechanicals’ who are in the woods rehearsing a play.When all is straight, we finally get to see the Mechanicals’play, and the Athenian nobility turn critics. A shortenedversion of the Shakespeare original, containing nuggets ofthe original text with modern insertions. Shakespeare’s sonHamnet holds the whole thing together as if managing aproduction of the play.

TARRAS are a six-piece band hailing from the north of England and the borders of Scotland. They play anexciting blend of self-penned songs and traditionalmaterial, reworked in the band’s distinctive style.Instruments including accordion, violin and cittern give Tarras a traditional sound, but fused with drums,bass, piano and guitar, the songs and arrangementsbecome very contemporary in style.

HAMLET by William Shakespeare

The Globe Theatre returns to St DonatsArts Centre with a raw, thrillinglyelemental production of this inexhaustibleplay, widely acclaimed in 2011 both ontour and at the Globe. Learning of the kinghis father’s death, Hamlet comes home tofind his uncle married to his mother andinstalled on the Danish throne. At night,the ghost of the old king demands thatHamlet avenge his ‘foul and most unnatural murder’.

Encompassing political intrigue and sexualobsession, philosophical reflection andviolent actions, tragic depth and wildhumour, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s ‘poemunlimited’, a colossus in the story of theEnglish language and the fullest expressionof Shakespeare’s genius.

The lawns will be open before hand toenjoy a pre-performance picnic for aperfect summer’s outing. Please make sure you bring your ownseating!

PEATBOG FAERIES

Based on the Isle of Skye, the Peatbog Faerieshave been described as ‘the future of Celticdance music’. They incorporate manyinfluences which take them from traditionaljigs and reels through jazz, hip hop, reggae andmore. This is high octane Celtic dance musicso be prepared to dance!

They are Peter Morrison (pipes and whistles),Peter Tickell (fiddle), Tom Salter (guitar),Innes Hutton (bass, percussion) GraemeStafford (keyboards) and Stuart Haikney(drums).

The band have toured all over the world andwon numerous awards, including the ‘BestLive Act’ at the prestigious Scots Trad Music

Awards. Their inventive and unique approachalways bring to its audience a true flavour oftraditional Scottish music. Their music hasbeen used for several TV, radio and DVDsoundtracks, and the band have evenperformed at the BBC Proms in the Park inGlasgow in collaboration with the ScottishSymphony Orchestra.

Fraser Smith Quartet

The Fraser Smith quartet bring you a mix ofold and new, with a contemporary stylefirmly rooted in the traditions of swing, bopand groove. Two saxes, bass and drumscombine to bring you something of a freshsound straight from the London jazz scene.After meeting in Trinity college of musicover two years ago they have beencommitted to working together anddeveloping their music as a unit. Expecteverything from fiery solos to feel goodswing, to heartfelt ballads, with melodictune writing along the way.

Our Jazz in the Glassroom series hasbecome incredibly popular with audiencefigures continuing to grow, so much so thatsome of last season’s concerts sold out.

In order to maintain such a high qualityprogramme for the jazz series we sourcemusicians from across Wales and theborders in order to provide you with anexciting mix of jazz artists with their unique styles and influences.

Back by popular demand, jazz harpist AmandaWhiting will perform an afternoon concert withmusic from the standards and jazz harprepertoire. Amanda has established herselfacross the UK as a leading jazz harpist, from StDavid’s Hall to the Southbank. Come along andhear the harp played in unique and fresh way.

Castle Tours Monday 13 - Wednesday 15 and Monday 20- Thursday 23 August, 2.30pm and 3.30pm

Atlantic College students lead guided tours of St Donats Castle and Renaissance Gardens.

The story of this castle and gardens is rich andcolourful indeed - from ghosts wailing on stormynights, executed pirates and more recently thestory of fantastic riches and Hollywood romancewhen the castle was bought by a man wholoved it – the American millionaire, WilliamRandolph Hearst, to the current owners Atlantic College and their students.

Tours begin and end at the St Donats ArtsCentre’s café, which will be open for tea and cakes.

explored their world, taking pictures of thesame words to create a beautiful andthought-provoking exhibition between thepeople of Ethiopia and South Wales.

‘IMPRESS’

This exhibition showcases the talent ofUWC Atlantic College students who haveparticipated in, and Artists who teach onthe Art activity programme. The workfeatured illustrates the many techniques onoffer at the college from Intaglio, Reliefand screen printed artwork. Imagery andthemes are as diverse as the student bodyand many pieces are for sale. Artworkfeatures a detail from ‘La Tribuna’, printedby Chris Lloyd, Printmaking Lecturer,Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Exploringwords, objects and characters to help build stories,various activities in creatvity will lead to a finalpiece of writing. I have been fortunate tolive in both Bhutan and Wales. Two countries ofgreat natural beauty, ancient heritage andunique culture; the focus of my photographicjourney. This exhibition tells a story of the pastand present; images that take you, the viewer,on a journey into some of the world’s mostbeautiful landscapes.

John Briggs ‘Atlantic College : ‘Early Days’ 1964-66’

An exhibition ofphotographs byJohn Briggs, anAmericanstudent atAtlantic Collegefrom 1964-1966.

The images include staff, students in originalschool uniform, their spare-time destinations,sailing and rescue activities, and the castle andcollege buildings before expansion. John nowlives in Newport and has published three photo-documentaries, two on Cardiff and one on Newport.

Beyond the Border Storytelling curates anexhibition of visual art inspired by fairy tales -Grimm’s and others - linked to the WalesInternational Storytelling Festival.

Nick Davies

From spending many years in the mediaindustry, Nick Davies has returned tofocussing her attention to returning to herlove of landscape painting. Here, in thisexhibition you will see her exploration ofcoastline, from large, dramatic landscapes tolooking at the more intricate side of coastallife. Inspired by the impact of light in nature,these landscapes display the artist’s use ofvibrant colour and texture within theseexpressive oil paintings.

How to Book TicketsOur Box Office is open 10am-4pm Monday to Friday andevenings and weekends (when there are performances)from one hour in advance of published performancetimes. You can book tickets online at www.stdonats.com(incurring a charge of 60p per ticket) or at the box office,by phone 01446 799100 or in person.

Please bring your booking reference with you to collectyour tickets from the box office. We accept all majorcredit and debit cards, incurring a cost of £1 pertransaction and can post your tickets for 50p. We nolonger accept cheques as payment for bookings. Alltickets must be paid for at time of booking, ticketscannot be reserved.

Refunds and exchangesWe regret we cannot refund tickets however we canexchange for another event. Tickets for exchange mustbe received at the box office at least 24 hours before theoriginal performance.

Reduced price ticketsReductions apply to senior citizens, students in full-timeeducation, registered disabled, wheelchair users and theircompanion, unemployed and 16s and under. Please bringproof of entitlement. Group discounts are available whereindicated. The management reserves the right to introducediscounts and other price changes without notice.
