Dear St. Edward Parish Family:
I LOVE Clint Eastwood movies. I remember the “Spaghetti Westerns” from when I was very young, and then the “Dirty Harry” movies, and then the many outstanding movies that he not only starred in, but also wrote, directed and produced.
One of my favorites is PALE RIDER. Clint plays a “preacher” who comes to the aid of a small town of tin panners in the Gold Rush era. In one scene, the antagonist in the story, a wealthy land baron who is trying to force the tin panners off of their land attempts to bribe the “preacher” with offers of a new church, fancy clothes, and a handsome sal-ary. Eastwood’s “preacher” character plays along for a bit, but then refuses the offer, paraphrasing the very famous line in today’s Gospel reading: You cannot serve both God and mammon.
The words from Jesus are a part of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus gives advice on how to live in holiness. The word “mammon” comes from an Aramaic word for “wealth” or “property.” There’s a story told that a man praying “Give us this day our daily bread “ heard God reply, “You already have enough bread - for your needs and the needs of others as well.” What do we have “stored away” that someone else needs? We prudently store up for the future while others barely survive. So why do we “store up?” Because it seems dangerous to give away what we’ve saved. Someday we might need it more than they do!
If we’re on the up and up with ourselves, we have to admit that we probably think that way. But if that IS our thinking, then we’re probably not trusting in God to take care of us, and are assuming that God won’t be as generous to us as we are to others.
That’s why Jesus went on to say, “You worry to much!” We need to take the focus OFF what worries us and instead place it on how good God is. Jesus said that God, who loves us so much, WILL take care of us. If we seek first God’s king-dom and approach daily life that way, we’ll have everything we need. DO WE BELIEVE IT?
May God bless and keep you always! F. Ri

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of
fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as
well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding
upon members of the Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the
Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to
prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
To those who came to the Harbor Lights Doo Wop performance, we hope you had a great time! I know the members of this group love coming here as we usually “sell out.” Proceeds going to the Building
Fund (School roof project) are $2193.12. Thank you for your help in making that possible!
