From the Pastor

Second Sunday of Easter (The Feast of Mercy)

On the Second Sunday of Easter, we hear St. John’s account of Easter and of the Sunday following. In the room where the disciples were gathered, the doors were locked for fear of the Jews, that is, for fear of the faction of the Jewish leadership that had had Jesus executed. Against all expectation, Jesus stood in the midst of the room. He gave the traditional greeting in Hebrew, “Shalom!” or “Peace!”

Then, unusually, he showed his hands and side, presumably still bearing the marks of his pas-sion. The evangelist adds, with understatement, “The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.” As I imagine the scene, they were astonished, they were shocked, they were giddy with an overwhelming joy. And Jesus said again, “Shalom!”

After this he commissioned them. As he was sent by the Father, so now he sent them. Then he breathed on them. This is another unusual detail in the story. It is St. John’s version of Pentecost. This breathing was the gift of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus himself said. It recalled the wind that swept over the waters at the dawn of creation. It recalled the gift of the breath of life that gave God gave Adam in the garden. This is the mighty power of the Spirit creating anew. This is the breath of life that now enlivens the Church. This is the rescue breathing for a humanity dead to sin, a humanity whose sins can now be forgiven through the ministry of the Church. Thomas Didymus was not there that first morning, and refused to believe the others without tangible proof. The following Sunday, when they gathered again, he was there. Jesus appeared and invited him to touch the wounds on his glorified body and thus to believe. Thomas answered with the traditional opening of a Jewish prayer, “My Lord and my God!” But this was not simply a story about Thomas. Jesus chided him for believing only because of seeing. Then Jesus added a blessing for all of us, for all the generations who would come to believe without seeing. As Peter said in the second reading, “Although you have not seen him, you love him.” This is the heritage of our faith. Some of us have even loved him to the point of laying down our lives for him. What a miracle of belief! Today is also called the Feast of Mercy, after the vision of St. Faustina Kowalska. In the Easter season, we recall the great love with which our Savior died on the Cross and rose in the power of Holy Spirit. There is no sin too great to evade the reach of his mercy. Let us all approach the Sacrament of Penance with confidence in that fact. And let us pray that all the human race may come at last to know his salvation.
