SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER OR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

The Second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. It is a relatively new solemnity. Between 1930 and 1938 Our Lord appeared to Sister Faustina Kowalska, a Sister of Mercy in Poland. Canonized on April 30, 2000, we now refer to her as Saint Faustina.

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, I invite you to take a look at the picture in the vestibule and offer up a prayer. Many Catholics pray during “the hour of mercy,” between 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. Jesus died on the cross out of love for all humanity. He only asks that we trust Him, and we can be assured of His mercy.

Saint Faustina saw a vision of Jesus, his garments shining with rays of light. As I mentioned a few years ago in a previous bulletin article, we have a picture of the image St. Faustina described in our vestibule next to the vigil lights. The picture is known as the Divine Mercy picture. The red and white rays coming forth from the Sacred Heart of Jesus, symbolize the blood and water that flowed from the side of Christ when the spear was thrust into his side. It is the blood of Christ that has redeemed us, and it is in the water of baptism that we are saved. According to St. Faustina, Jesus says: “I promise, that the soul that will venerate this picture will not perish. I further promise to that soul victory over its enemies already here on earth and especially in the hour of death. I, Myself, shall defend that soul as my own glory.”

Yours in Christ, (Psalm 130 is a prayer for Pardon and Mercy. It is a good psalm to pray as you look upon the Divine Mercy picture.) PSALM 130 I Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication: II If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered. III I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in his word. My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn. IV More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord, For with the Lord is kindness and with him is plenteous redemption; And he will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

A SEASON OF JOY “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). This first line of today’s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles—Luke, Peter, and John—who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Works of Mercy As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, take a moment and reflect on the works of mercy we His Church can do here on earth. How many can you name? If you’re struggling, prayerfully review the lists below. God may have something to say to you. The works of mercy are a Christ-like response to friends, neighbors and strangers who suffer in body and spirit. All the corporal works of mercy are found in the parable of The Last Judgment (Mt. 25:34-40) except the last, “bury the dead.” This one was added out of respect for the body as a “temple of God” (1 Cor. 3:16).

1. Feed the hungry 2. Give drink to the thirsty; 3. Clothe the naked. 4. Visit the imprisoned. 5. Shelter the homeless. 6. Visit the sick. 7. Bury the dead.

The spiritual works of mercy also have to do with personal relationships.

1. Correct those who need it. 2. Teach the ignorant. 3. Give advice to those who need it. 4. Comfort those who suffer. 5. Be patient with others. 6. Forgive those who hurt you.

7. Pray for others.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of the custom of burning a lamp before the tabernacle are in Jewish worship, where a lamp called ner tamid or “eternal flame” burns before the ark in every synagogue. The ark contains the sacred scrolls of the Torah. The flame represents the menorah in the Temple, and therefore is never extinguished. In fact, the word “tabernacle” itself is derived from Hebrew, as taber is the Hebrew word for “tent,” and hearkens back to the forty years of wandering in the desert. The pilgrim people were sustained in hope by an awareness that God was not only in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, but had quite literally “pitched his tent with them” in the shelter for the Ark of the Covenant. Some artisans have used this theme of “ark” or “tent” to design a tabernacle for the Blessed Sacrament. In Christian practice, Anglicans and Catholics use a sanctuary lamp to point toward the presence of the reserved sacrament, and Lutherans use it as a sign of God’s presence in the house of worship, but not necessarily as a clue that the Eucharist is reserved. Why, even in an age of electric light, is the sanctuary lamp an oil light or candle? Perhaps not only to point to Christ, the light of the world, but also to point to sacrifice. For the light to exist, there must be sacrifice. The oil or wax is transformed into light, just as those who pray here, or who will receive viaticum from here, are called to transformation in Christ. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Page Fourteen St. Eugene Parish Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy)

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
