Dear Parents,
Bike Shed Update I am pleased to announce that we have finally received our permit to proceed with the new bike shed. I would like to call any interested builders in our community to make contact with me to tender for the construction of the bike shed. We have a set of plans that have been drawn up and I would like to acknowledge the tireless work of Nat Preston and his team who have been the driving force for this project over the past 6 months. It is very exciting to begin moving forward with this project.
Staff Conference Last Thursday and Friday the staff had their annual conference which was held at RACV Cape Schanck. The time away was spent looking at feedback methods and peer observation designed to better improve our teaching practice. We also had an informative session with Fr Ian culminating in a staff mass celebration to end the conference. I would like to thank all staff for their participation in this valued time together and congratulate them in their spirit of participation. Lightning Premierships I would like to wish all of our Lightning Premiership athletes well as they compete in the Netball and Football competitions today and tomorrow. Special thanks to our senior staff and Mrs Thompson who have selected and prepared the teams. Thanks also to the many parents who have volunteered their time to assist with team management and supervision. School Reports I would like to publicly acknowledge the incredible work performed by the staff when completing this Semesters reports. It has been an absolute delight for Mr Rodrigues and I to read the comments and see the progress made by all of our students. Our staff have worked very hard in not only writing the reports but working tirelessly in preparing the new format and its contents. In particular I would like to thank Mr Rodrigues and Mrs Drinan for the many hours preparing the new format for staff to use. Parent Teacher Student Interviews The midyear parent Teacher Student meetings will be held in the last week of Term 2 on Tuesday 27th June and Thursday 29th June. School will finish at 1:50pm on both of these days. More information in the next page of the newsletter regarding the online booking information. School Board I would like to take this opportunity to thank our school board members for their input to our meeting held earlier this week. There were many items discussed at this meeting. Some of them being short term goals and other being long term goals for the school. I can confirm that we are in the preliminary stages of investigating a refurbishment of our playground surfaces with the Mary Clare playground set to undergo a transformation from an asphalt surface to a ‘fake grass’ sports ground surface. More details will follow early next term with a competition for all families in the design of the area. Parents and Friends The next parents and Friends meeting will be held next Tuesday 20th June at 7pm in the Staff work room. All parents are invited to attend. First Eucharist Please keep our Year 4 students and their families in your prayers as they will receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist this weekend in St. Finbar’s church. I would like to acknowledge the work of Miss Kate Johnston, Mrs Christine Kelly, Mrs June Kellar and Mrs Sonia Blakey in preparing and assisting the children for this Sacrament of Initiation. Thanks also to Mrs Yvette Porter and Mrs Emma Hepples for the admin work that has gone into the preparation as well. All families are invited to attend either the 6pm Saturday night mass or the 9am or 11am Sunday mass to support our students God Bless, Mr Pat Berlingeri Principal

This weekend we celebrate the feast of The Body and Blood of Christ and our Year 4 students will be receiving the body and blood of Christ for the first time at three of our weekend masses. It is a very special time for them and a good opportunity for us to reflect on WHY we continue to go to church and receive Christ. The readings chosen by the Year 4 teachers and students highlight the belief that we are all one community, and most importantly ONE with Christ, because we share in the same Eucharistic meal and together we are called to go out into the world and try to do our bit to help … the poor; the hungry etc …. Our Winter Appeal for St Vincent de Paul has begun and many thanks to those who have already responded so generously. …. Special call out to FG for their superb effort so far …. Please keep the goods coming … Members of St Vinnies, here at St Finbar’s are all volunteers who give of their time so that the poor and the hungry and the homeless are cared for this winter ….. Seasons for Growth: For Students in Years 5 & 6
‘Seasons for Growth is a program for children, young people or adults who have experienced significant change or loss.’
At St Finbar’s we will once again be offering students an opportunity to participate in the Seasons for Growth program. Parents who express an interest in this program and give consent for their child to participate will be given the necessary information for this process to begin.
Small groups of 4-6 children will work with Mr Rodrigues, a trained adult Companion (facilitator), who will support the children in learning new ways to share, think about and respond to the changes and losses in their lives. Children learn that they are not alone in dealing with the effects of change, loss and grief. They build their understanding and communication, decision making and problem solving skills as part of a supportive peer group.
The Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program takes place over a structured eight week period filled with peer-to-peer learning opportunities - with time to talk and listen as well as take part in activities including drawing, music, art, journaling, roleplays and storytelling. A celebration session completes the program, and each session explores an age appropriate concept, for example “Change is a part of life” and “Caring for my feelings”. The story of the seasons is used to explain the cycles of life, including change and loss, and provides a valuable metaphor for children to explore and understand their own story. Seasons for Growth is based on the belief that change, loss and grief are a normal and valuable part of life. The program examines the impact of changes such as death, separation, divorce, and natural disaster upon our lives, and explores how we can learn to live with and grow from these experiences. The core intentions of this program are the development of resilience and emotional literacy to promote social and emotional wellbeing. The program is educational in nature and does not provide therapy. If you feel this Program may be of benefit to your child you can complete the expression of interest form HERE. We may not be able to accommodate all students immediately as the sessions generally work best when grouped by age. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST IS NOW AVAILABLE: Stacey is available for children who are presenting with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. This service is completely covered by Medicare. To access this service please speak to your child’s teacher or you can email or speak to Mr Nigel Rodrigues ~ Deputy Principal who will provide you with details on how to refer your child. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- In November 2016 I auditioned for a musical called Les Miserables, which had over 450 auditioners, and I was chosen to play the role of little Cosette. Les Miserables is one of the world’s most popular musicals and is set in France in the years 1815 to 1832.
In February this year I began rehearsing with the other CLOC cast. I had to learn a song “Castle on a cloud” which I sang at rehearsal. The Director, Musical Director and Choreographer gave us instructions on how to sing the song, move around the stage and how to act. As well as rehearsing we got to try on our costumes and had our photo taken for the show’s publicity. The photos were used to advertise the show online as well as posters in cafe’s and on trains.
In pre-production week we had dress rehearsals at the National Theatre, St Kilda, along with the orchestra, microphones, sound effects, lighting and props. Then on Opening Night we got to perform the show before an audience. I got to perform the role of little Cosette every 2nd night, alternating with Ava Rose. Backstage before the show we had to get ready for our performance, getting into our costume, having our microphone fitted, and getting our hair and makeup done.
The show ran for 2 weeks and we were watched by 9,500 people. At the end of each show we got to take our bows while the audience applauded, often with a standing ovation. Over 200 people worked to make the show possible. I loved being part of the show and I made lots friends like my buddy Ava Rose who shared the role of little Cosette with me. By Charlotte B ~ 6H

SPORT NEWS ~ Mrs Tania Thompson
IMPRESSIVE DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY EFFORTS Forecast inclement weather saw the back-up date being utilised this year for the Beachside Division Cross Country. Instead of the Tuesday, both Vegas H (3D) & Zac B (5H) headed off to Bald Hill Park in Clarinda on Friday 2nd June for their respective 2km & 3km races. Competing against some extremely talented athletes both took to the hilly course with gusto and gave it their best. A big congratulation goes to our super-fit Vegas, who despite only turning 9 later this year, managed to come an impressive 15th in a strong field of approx. 48 runners! Look out next year! Zac should also be proud of his 3km run, coming mid-field in a super-strong field of 11y Boys. Many thanks goes to their supportive parents who took them to and from the event on the day!

Sunday 18th June Corpus Christi Meals are very important events. Not only do we physically need food and drink to keep ourselves alive, but we use meals to mark occasions and celebrate events: birthdays; weddings; dates; achievements; disappointments; reunions. There is a sacredness about gathering with friends and family and sharing a meal together. Stories are told; memories shared; the food is appreciated and more often than not there’s a drink to accompany the meal. Treating such occasions with gratitude – as blessed moments of grace – is living out the Eucharistic reality of welcoming Jesus into our lives and seeking to be more like him.
