This weekend we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord – which used to be celebrated exactly forty days after the resurrection of Jesus – Ascension Thursday! “Christ who ascended into heaven in his body carries on what he began on earth through his new body, the church. He teaches through its apostles and evangelists. He ministers through its prophets and pastors. In and through the church, Jesus continues to heal and to comfort; to forgive and to include. We have not been left alone; we have his power, the same power with which he performed marvels when he walked the earth. We have not been left alone; we have each other. Together we make up the new body of Christ. Together we await the fullness of this body. It is this new body that stands in between the times, secure in what we have, confident of what we will be given.” Dianne Bergant Our Social Justice Leaders who are busily allocating ‘good’ to classes and making posters… these will be published next week … In the meanwhile you may like to get ahead by collecting any of these items: Soups (tinned and packet); Noodles & flavourings, etc.; Baked beans, tinned spaghetti, etc; Healthy breakfast cereals; Tinned and dry food e.g. tuna, salmon; vegetables, tomatoes etc; Rice. Long life simmer sauces, etc.; Pasta and pasta sauces; Spreads (jams, honey, Vegemite, peanut butter, etc.); Biscuits, rice crackers, etc; Tea, coffee, Milo; Soap, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, etc; Toothpaste and tooth brushes; Toilet paper; Laundry powder ….. Things like packs of multiple items (toothbrushes, for example) are better value buys – and we can split those to assist individuals. But for food stuffs we prefer smaller ‘standard’ jars and packs (say, 1kg rice, for example) rather than having to re-package large bulk packages. Thank you in advance to all the students, staff and parents of St Finbar’s Primary School for your wonderful, on-going support of our annual Winter Appeal – from all of us at St Vincent de Paul Society, Brighton East Conference. On Tuesday night, the Year 4 students together with their parents took another step in their preparation for First Eucharist. Activities on the night mirrored the four main parts of our Mass, when ‘Gather’; ‘Listen’; ‘Receive’; and ‘Go’. Thanks to all who attended for their wholehearted participation …hope you live the ‘action’ this week! Let us continue

to keep our year 4 families in our prayers as they continue their faith journey ….

Have a great week,

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS ~ June Kellar

Dates to remember …

Weekend of 3rd & 4th June – Confirmation Commitment at any mass

Dear Families of St Finbar’s,

Mr Berlingeri has recently completed his annual report to the school community and in this report we are reminded of the many great things happening here at St Finbar’s. Each year this report highlights the achievements of the year and directions for the following year. Student Wellbeing will again be a major focus for all of us and remains one of the most important aspects of our school’s Annual Action Plan. As I have mentioned often, the responsibility of our children’s wellbeing is everyone’s. Parents and school staff must work together in enabling our children to develop their social skills, their resilience and their sense of connectedness to this community. I have been reminded many times by visitors to our school that St Finbar’s is a very welcoming place and has

a great community atmosphere. What is important is that we are always aware of individuals, whether they be adults or children who may not always feel this way and need to be supported and enabled to participate in this great community. As we continue this journey together I ask that we all take every opportunity to strengthen the connections we have with each other so that each child and family at St Finbar’s can feel a genuine connectedness to others.

Foundation PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) This term our Foundation students have begun their PMP Program. It was great to feel the excitement and watch the enthusiasm of the children as they experienced the activities and challenges provided. Thanks to the parents who have been able to assist so far and we look forward to others being able to help out as well. “PMP is a programme which aims to develop the child's perceptions and understandings of himself or herself in relation to her/his world, through movement/motor experiences. It aims to develop perceptions of height and space, the pattern and order of the child's natural world, the laws and limitations that govern the human body. Above all it aims to give the child confidence to manipulate him/herself in their world to suit her or his own best interests. PMP is seen as part of the programme of total experiences. It is not a physical education programme alone, or music, or fitness, or dance, or gymnastics. It is a programme that uses facets of all of the above in order to develop children's perceptions.”

PMP is different because it aims to develop the child rather than the skill. It is not purely a motor programme.”

STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS ~ Nigel Rodrigues

SPORT NEWS ~ Mrs Tania Thompson

GREAT EFFORTS @ DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY We’d like to congratulate our 81 Year 3-6’s who represented our school at the Dendy District Cross Country last Friday. Bald Hill Park certainly proved a lot tougher course to run than Dendy Park, with many parts of the course having runners tackle hills & dips. Over the day, all students participated in their respective SSV age-groups; 9/10y, 11y and 12/13y’s against our nine other Dendy schools. All competitors gave it a good go, with St. Finbar’s managing to place 7th in the Winning School by % (points achieved divided by the no. of Yr 3-6 students) and 6th in the Outright Points Section. St Joan of Arc did very well and won the trophy for the Outright Winning School on the day. The top 8 from each age group will now attend the next level of competition; Beachside Division XC, which is to be held next Tuesday 30th May at Bald Hill Park. Congratulations to these four students that have qualified and will represent our District next week: 9/10G: Vegas H (3D): 3rd 11B: Zac B (5H): 8th

12/13G: Lily P (6D): 4th 12/13G: Ruby R (6H): 6th A special mention also goes to these ten students who finished in the top 20 within their age-group – a wonderful achievement also: 9/10G: Scarlett M (4K): 14th Maisy W (4K): 17th 11G: Stephanie D (5A): 10th Chloe S (5A): 18th Ava G (6D): 17th 11B: Charles F (5A): 20th 12/13G: Charlotte V (6D): 16th Sarah V (6H): 17th 12/13B: Oliver N (6H): 13th Liam O (6D): 16th

Quality Improvement Plan- National Reconciliation Week 27May- 3 June National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. The weeklong celebration is an ideal opportunity for all Australians to explore ways to join the national reconciliation effort. National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May to 3 June, and recognises two significant dates in Australia’s history. On 27 May 1967, Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum. On 3 June 1992, the Mabo decision was made in the High Court of Australia, recognising Native Titles and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people having rights to the land. The decision further recognised that, in some cases, Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander peoples Native Title had survived British colonisation. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision.

St Finbar's OSHC will join in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision with a range of activities and experiences during National Reconciliation Week 2017. Miss McCurdy, St Finbar's School Sustainability Co-ordinator will also visit the OSHC with the intention of making scarecrows. In light of our commemoration we will use colours that reflect the symbolic meaning of the Aboriginal flag and "yarn" (an Indigenous cultural form of conversation) with children regarding what each colour represents, Aboriginal culture and history. Look out for our new display and learning. As always, your feedback is welcome.

School Principal Mr Patrick Berlingeri 9592 4479

Sunday 28th May The Ascension of the Lord Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ could have continued to appear to groups of followers, century after century – until now! But, he didn’t, because the disciples had to be weaned of his Risen-mode of appearance among them lest they think that the victory over Death is meant for human beings alone. But, as St Paul says, the Risen Lord is the One who ‘fills all creation’ with His power radiating out from his Risen Humanity. However, dis-appearance is not the same as absence. We believe that Our Risen Lord is present in many modes, including as St Paul says ‘ … the Church which is His Body’. That is why the figures in white rebuke the disciples: ‘Why do you stand looking into Heaven?’ The Disciples had, rather, to ready themselves to be the Spirit-filled body of Jesus Christ in their own time and place. As we do. We might pause for a moment to stop staring into Heaven, to ready ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit as at Pentecost in order to be ‘The Church which is His Body.’
