St. Frances Cabrini Parish Page 2 Allen Park, Michigan
Weekend at Birney’s First Sunday of Advent
History can indeed move fast at certain mes. The Gospel admonion of Jesus to ‘stay awake’ and ‘be
prepared’ is the inial Advent instrucon each year. The words point to the doctrinal truth of Christ’s re-
turn in the second coming. But they can also compel the awareness that our own lives, too, may be insert-
ed into a moment of historical gravity which only unveils itself in due course. Many of us at some me in
life need to recover religious convicons and return to a fully commi&ed pracce of our Catholic faith. Con-
versions can come in realizing that life is both short and precarious. It must be treated with serious respect
as our opportunity to live in God.’ (Magnificat, pg.19)
Welcome to our new staff members. I would like to extend a warm Cabrini welcome to new members of our parish staff:
Mrs. Gail Scalf as the Parish Administra ve Assistant. Her responsibilies will include working at the front desk of the
parish office, maintaining the parish calendar, room requests, sacramental needs and a&ending to all the other many du-
es of the busy parish office. Gail is a lifeme parishioner at Cabrini, and will be returning to the rectory office, a job she
once held as a teenager. Welcome (back) to the Cabrini staff Gail!
…..Mrs. Pat O'Hara, as the newly created posion of Communica ons Assistant. Pat will be responsible for the parish bulle-
n, a new electronic parish newsle&er, and overseeing parish communicaon through email, website and a new parish
app. Her office is located in the parish office. Pat served for many years as a youth minister at local parishes, and has re-
cently been part of the Youth Ministry Leadership Team at Cabrini. She is also a Cabrini parishioner. Welcome to the
Cabrini staff Pat!
…..Mrs. Nancy Misovich, as the Assistant to the Religious Educa on Director. Nancy will be working alongside Mrs. Agnes
Villarreal to help maintain the records, organizaon of the office, and communicaon with all the students and catechists.
Nancy and her husband Mark have sent their five children through our school and connues to be very acve in the parish/
school. Welcome to the Cabrini staff Nancy!
Advent Confessions- Dec.6
On Friday, Dec.6 during our normal (Advent) Exposion of the Blessed Sacrament in Church, there will be several priests
from the Downriver Vicariate present at Cabrini to hear confessions. They will be available from 1pm – 2:30pm. There will
be no service, just confessions and the opportunity to spend me in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Later that
same day at 7pm, the Youth of our parish will conclude our day long me of Adoraon with a special Holy Hour including
Praise and Worship music. Please come a join us for the life giving giI of reconciliaon and/or me in prayer and adoraon
of the Blessed Sacrament.
Who Are You Becoming?- Dec.11
Our next Dynamic Parish event will be on Wednesday, Dec.11 at 7pm in the Church. We are blessed to once again fea-
ture a naonally known speaker who comes to our parish with much passion and love of the Lord. Our speaker will be Jon-
athan Fanning, a man who has a moving and inspiraonal story to share about conversion and faith. Once again, this even-
ing will be free of charge and include child care for anyone who would be in need of this service (please call to register your
child(ren): 313-381-5601 ext. 1050). This will be an excellent opportunity to enter more fully into spiritual preparaon dur-
ing Advent. We look forward to your presence.

The Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults Our RCIA team has a series of
topics that is presented weekly
to explore the beliefs of the Ro-
man Catholic Church. It is part of
the journey for our 15 candidates
and catechumens who seek to
enter the Catholic Church at the
Easter Vigil, but open to all.
While the RCIA is a process for unbaptized adults and children
of catechetical age, as well as those baptized in another Chris-
tian denomination, the RCIA team extends an invitation to all
parishioners, their families and friends who want to learn more
about and deepen their faith.
Topics (listed below) are presented from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. Sundays in Mother Cabrini Room.
The sessions provide an excellent opportunity to nurture our
faith. For more information, call the Religious Education Office

Our Adult Faith Formation continues as we view
the highly acclaimed DVD series “Catholicism” by
Bishop Robert Barron, a series we’re presenting on
Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Holy Family Hall.
George Weigel, biographer of St. John Paul II calls
it “the most important media project in the history of
the Catholic Church in America.”
Dec. 3: The Life of His Love
Prayer and the Life of the Spirit
Bishop Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is
centered on prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic
Church states: “Prayer is the liIing up of the mind
and the heart to God.” On pilgrimage to the places
where the great saints and spiritual masters lived,
Bishop Barron explores the different types of prayer:
contemplaon; adoraon; peon; and intercession.
In telling the stories of Catholics like Thomas Merton,
St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, Bishop
Barron demonstrates how the human person can be
transformed through prayer that manifests a deep,
spiritual commitment centered in Christ.
First Sunday of Advent
There is an Advent spirit in the heart of
every human person. It is one of long-
ing,of yearning for a fulfillment that
somehow lies beyond ourselves; for we long for the
coming of the Lord.
As you put your giF in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor
Box, your heart will discover the true meaning of
Christmas as you help those who are suffering and
poor to long for the coming of the Lord.
