A MESSAGE FROM OUR PAROCHIAL ADMINISTRATOR

My Dear Parishioners, I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for over two and a half months; the weekend where we are finally resuming public Masses and trying to get back to a sense of some normalcy here at St. Francis. Yet, there is a feeling of melancholy that hangs over all of us right now because of things going on in our nation. Just as we were on the verge of seeing hints of light at the end of the tunnel with the Coronavirus, we are now in a state of civil unrest that hasn’t been seen in our nation since the late 1960s. All of us share understandable rage at the death of George Floyd and it’s tough to process how a police officer could kneel on the neck of an unarmed man for nearly nine minutes after he was caught using a suspected counterfeit $20 bill to purchase a pack of cigarettes. Mr. Floyd was a regular in that small corner store for many years too and the owner said he was pleasant and never caused any problems. About two years ago, I tried to purchase a coffee at a Dunkin’ Donuts in the city and found out that the $5 bill I had given to the worker was fraudulent (I, of course, didn’t know it at the time), the worker simply gave it back to me and informed me it was phony, so I crumpled it up and took out another bill from my wallet. That’s the end of my story. Why did George Floyd’s story end so tragically different than mine? Back in the late 70s, the US Bishops issued a document on racism in the United States called Brothers and Sisters to Us; and sadly, some of the observations noted in that document are just as true today as they were back then. The document says that racism seeks to divide the human family and is a total mockery of the words of Jesus, where he reminds us to: “treat others the way you would have them treat you.” Our own bishop, Bishop Perez, recently issued a statement that sadly, these recent events in Minneapolis are a “stark reminder that the vile evil of racism has not been stamped out in this country.” He is right. Let us demand from our lawmakers’ true reform so that our nation may become ever more color-blind in the application of the law and treatment of its citizens. Sadly, the many peaceful protests have been hijacked by agitators and destructive chaos is now ensuing in cities across America; that is a total slap in the face to the memory of George Floyd. This past Monday, George’s brother, Terrence, knelt down in tears to say a prayer and then pleaded with protesters, using a megaphone, to remain peaceful: “I’m not over here blowing up stuff, if I’m not over here messing up my community, then what are y’all doing? Y’all doing nothing. Because that’s not going to bring my brother back at all.” I pray that people heed Terrence Floyd’s words and protest peacefully because right now, all of us are on the same page in wanting justice for George Floyd and societal change, but that will all be squandered if the riots and lawlessness persists.

I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite, modern-day statesmen, Bobby Kennedy. Kennedy gave a passionate speech to a group of African Americans in Indianapolis just after Martin Luther King, JR had been shot and killed, he said:

What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence or lawlessness; but love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer… The vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of life, and want justice for all human beings who abide in our land.

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in 2013, Pope Francis in his homily challenged Catholics to reflect on whether or not the Eucharist is a “moment of true communion with the Lord, but also with my many brothers and sisters who share at the same altar.” Now that we have been able to return to Mass, have experienced a renewal in your love and appreciation of the Eucharist? Pope Francis also asked: while “adoring Christ truly present in the Eucharist, do I allow myself to be transformed by him? What is your answer?

1 Corinthians 10:16-17 In the Second Reading Paul writes, “The loaf of bread is one,” and so are we. After experiencing the recent unrest in our country what do you think you can do to live out this reality?

John 6:51-58 In the Eucharist we participate in the Mystical Body of Christ. St. Augustine noted this in two of his sermons, saying, “Be what you see, and receive what you are,” and “If you receive worthily, you are what you have received. How do you make sure that your reception of the Mystical Body of Christ is made with real preparation and intention?
