Pastor’s Note: Through the Messiah we will belong to God… God acted in history, at many significant points in time and through many marvelous deeds; and all of them were with deep love for humanity. The readings today remind us how God has been acting through various people to redeem us to belong to him again. The promise of a Messiah was a major step in his ef-fort to reclaim us to be his own. Even when we walked away from God, he never abandoned us. The promise he has been making through various prophets at various times gets fulfilled in the person of Jesus. This Jesus, the Messiah had to come from the line of David, who was the king who united the people of Israel as one Jewish nation. The Messiah who is to come will go beyond the boundaries of Jewish existence and bring together all the nations as one. To emphasize the Davidic line, we see Jo-seph coming into the picture. It was through his consent to be a foster father to Jesus, that we were gifted with the Son of Man. Everything that happened in connection with the birth of Christ was a manifestation of God’s promises getting fulfilled. God truly cares.
Church Humor
A Sunday school teacher was asking her students some questions after a series of les-sons on God's omnipotence. She asked, "Is there anything God can't do?"
All was silent. Finally, one boy held up his hand.
The teacher, on seeing this, was disappointed that they had missed the point of the lesson. She sighed and asked, "Well, what is it you think God can't do?"
The boy replied, "He can't please everybody."
