Are you an adult who was never confirmed? Join us Sunday, Sept 29th at 9 a.m. in the St. Julie Center as the RCIA team gathers to talk about how God calls us throughout life, and the ways we can respond. We would love to have you join us to talk about this process! ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING A LECTOR ? Members of our parish community proclaim the first and second readings and the Prayers of the Faithful at our Masses. We are now recruiting new members for this ministry! Training consists of three two-hour sessions where fundamentals are covered and feedback and support are provided. Once you have completed training, you can let Mary Heider know which Mass time(s) you prefer, and you will be scheduled approximately once a month or so, depend- ing on the number of lectors available at each Mass. If you have any questions, please call Mary in the parish office, 254-6233. Training will begin in mid-October. Thank you for your prayerful consider- ation of this ministry! LOOKING AHEAD TO MISSION SUNDAY IN OCTOBER World Mission Sunday is the weekend of Oc- tober 19 and 20 this year. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called for a Synod on the Amazon, and in keeping with that, the Missions Office in the Archdio- cese of Cincinnati has chosen to highlight the life and legacy of Sr. Dorothy Stang in our area. If you receive envelopes, you will have a Mis- sion Sunday envelope in your packet, but we will also place special envelopes at the doors over the next few weeks which you may use instead or if you are a visi- tor to St. Helen. The envelope has a picture of Sr. Dorothy, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, and notes that she was murdered in Brazil while trying to protect the rights of the indigenous peoples and the Amazon rain forest itself. Whichever envelope you use or if you make your contributions through Faith Direct, your donations will be in remembrance of Sr. Dot. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATE The 2019-2020 Religious Education (RE) school year has be- gun! With nearly 60 children enrolled, we are having a great start to the school year! Classes for our RE program starts at Pre-Kindergarten and goes to the Eight Grade and we still have plenty of room in each of the classes. So, if you are interested in having your child participate in RE, it is not too late! Please contact Sean Kelly at [email protected] for more information.

RIVERSIDE, OHIO SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

LIVING SALT & LIGHT TOM GORMAN

Tom Gorman was born in Youngstown, and arrived in this area 43 years ago to work at Wright Pat. He retired three years ago after a forty-year career with the Department of Defense. He and his lovely wife Denise were married in 1980, and joined St. Helen’s parish in 1983. While they were still very new members, as was the custom of the time the president of the parish council called and encouraged them to participate in one of the parish or-ganizations. Tom knew about the work of the Saint Vincent de Paul organization from the parish in which he was raised, and was aware of several people active in the ministry there. He likewise

felt called to help in that way, for he believed that SVDP’s work was good ‘Christianity in Action.” He therefore replied that SVDP was where he wanted to be involved. His wife also said she’d join, and Frank Heider, a prominent member of the ministry, -. welcomed them with open arms and introduced them to the other Conference members. Now Tom is finishing his second consecutive three-year term as President of St. Helen’s SVDP Conference (Fran O’Shaungessy was elected the new president just this month), after also serving in this capacity earlier in life. Return here next week to hear more about Tom’s reflections on the value, beauty, and importance of the mission of the SVDP, and why he continues to serve in this way after all these years.
