Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The following fasting and abstinence regulations are observed:

Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older.

Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are observed on Good Friday and, where possible, on Holy Saturday. On these days, Christians prepare themselves by these disciplines in anticipation of the renewal of their baptismal commitment on Easter.

From its earliest days, the Church has urged the baptized and the catechumens to observe the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiv-ing, and prayer as a preparation for the celebration of Easter. Failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious, but failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national, and world-wide programs of sharing.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suf-fering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should pre-vail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fast-

ing.

A Family Perspective ~ Feb. 22, 2015

Jesus went into the desert to put his life in per-

spective. This Lent, take a fresh look at a dif-

ficult relationship in your life. Concentrate on

the positive things that person does, not just the negatives. Try

to understand why their behaviors “bug” you. Can you hon-

estly share your feelings with them without attacking them?

Make Lent a time to MEND and FORGIVE!

RESPECTLIFE~February22,2015RESPECTLIFE~February22,2015RESPECTLIFE~February22,2015RESPECTLIFE~February22,2015

“Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim

your praise.” Psalm 51:17

REFLECTION: If you were stranded on a desert is-land, and had pen, paper, and a bottle, the note you could write and put in that bottle could save your life. Before sealing it and throwing it into the sea, you would make sure that you put your very best effort behind what you said. So it is with conversations you have about abortion. Some day they may save a life.

PRAYER: Give me confidence, O Lord, at every moment in

which I will need to speak on this topic.

St Paul's epistle to the Ephesians Many say that there is no other New Testament epistle that expresses Christian truths in such a majestic way. The theme focuses on Jesus' Incar-nation and its effects. In this study we are going to see how the Church relates to Christ, to the entire universe that the Father has redeemed through the Son, and to the glorious plan of God that will be consummated at the end of time.

Please join us for this study - your life will be richer for it! - It will begin on March 2 and conclude on April 27 - choose a Monday morning (9:15-11:00) or a Monday evening (7:00-9:00). We meet in the Youth Room (basement of the Caring Place). Cost for the textbook is $19.

Morning Offering Prayer: O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.

The Pope asks us to pray for two intentions each

month. These are the intentions for February:

♦ Prisoners ~ That prisoners, especially the young, may be able to rebuild lives of dignity.

♦ Separated spouses ~ That married people who are separated may find welcome and support in the Christian community.

take one with the return envelope and put in the offertory basket as

soon as you can. Thank you again for your generosity!**

Festival 2015 Update There will be some noticeable changes coming to the 2015 St. John Vianney Fes-tival. Skerbeck Carnival notified us that they had booked a different event in our normal time slot and could only make it if we moved the dates of our Festival back late into the Fall or into early Spring. The Festival Committee met and agreed that we would not change the date. Therefore, for the first time in many years there will not be a carnival midway at the 2015 Festival. The Festival Committee will be meeting again in early March to begin formalizing plans for the 2015 event. If you would like to participate in the planning process or have any comments/concerns, please contact Ben Ora at 616-648-1367 or [email protected].

From the SJV Foundation A huge thank you to all of you who at-tended our annual Gala at Noto’s Old World Restaurant on January 24. It was an exceptional evening of fine dining and dancing. Our award winners: Per-son of the Year Jeanne Anne Hudson, Volunteer of the Year Marty Best and our new award to Outstanding Alumni Joe Cramer, could not have been more deserving. Thanks to the Committee for a job well done and to the Noto family for their support. See you next year.

Thinking spring yet? When you start to clean out your clos-

ets and basements, remember that we will be having our An-

nual Second Best Sale on Friday, April 10th from 8:00 am

to 5:00 pm. Drop off and set up day will be Thursday,

April 9th in the Village Hall all day. All proceeds will go to

the Tuition Assistance Fund. Watch for more details to

come.

MISSION OF THE CHURCH -

Of her very nature, the Church is missionary. This means her members are called by God to bring the Gospel by word and deed to all peoples and to every situation of work, education, culture, and commu-nal life in which human beings find each other. The members of the Church seek to transform society not by power but by persuasion and by example.
