Dear Parishioners, Our Gospel this weekend describes for us how Jesus was transfigured in the presence of three of His Apostles: Peter, James, and John. At that moment, there

was what might be called an eruption of divine light. In fact, Jesus became so dazzlingly bright that it was difficult to look on Him. It would be like for us looking directly at the sun. During our time in Lent, we are called to a type of transformation, as well. Pope Francis has put it quite simply, “Listen to Jesus and follow

Him. That is the message of the Transfiguration.” And, that’s true. The process of our transfiguration starts by following what the Father asks in our Gospel. The Father looked at the apostles and says, “this is My beloved Son, Listen to Him.” When you think about it, we listen to a lot of things in our lives. We listen to the

news, we listen to the paper, we listen to all these things and the Father looks at us and says, “This is Jesus. This is my beloved son. I want you to listen to Him." What does Jesus tell us to do? Well, we know what he tells his disciples at the Last Supper to “Do this in remembrance of me.” He sends them forth to confect the sacraments

and in a particular way, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. So, in essence, He wants us to encounter Him in the sacraments as often as possible and to be transfigured through our encounter with Him in confession, in the Eucharist and in our prayer. To be transfigured we need to be humble and open to receive this gift which starts

with a relationship with Him. And, since all relations are based on trust, we really need to trust Him. When we are transformed, the light bulb goes on and His way of life becomes our way of life. This time of Lent we set out for this type of change in our lives. We walk these forty days together with hope against hope to encounter

Christ in a personal and powerful life changing way. May this be what we all experience. God Bless, Fr. Butler

Session 2: An Encounter with Mercy We are not defined by our failures and mistakes;

rather we are defined by God’s love for us

Confession is an encounter of God’s Mercy

In the sacrament, God not only forgives us, but he

also heals our wounds and the root causes of our sin

It is Christ himself whom we encounter in the Sac-

rament of Reconciliation-the priest is acting in the
