RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

HOLY COMMUNION

We had a very full congregation for what was a very special day for 35 students who made their First Holy Communion. We pray that all of these children may allow Jesus to continue to be present in their lives as they continued to be nourished through this Sacrament.

HOLY COMMUNION PHOTOS

Most children would have received a note regarding the photographs taken during the First Holy Communion Mass. There is a note attached with this newsletter if you missed receiving the note earlier.

MISSION DAY FOR SAINT VINCENT’S ORPHANAGE IN VIETNAM

Recently we held a free dress mission day to support the orphanage in Vietnam run by the Dominican sisters that Sr Tuyen and Sr Duyen belong to. Thank you to our Year 6 students and staff who presented a touching powerpoint about this orphanage and the amazing work done by the Dominicans. Along with bringing a gold coin donation, classes made and decorated capes that will be sent to the orphanage. $400 was raised.

Tim Maxwell (Assistant Principal, Religious Education)

PERFORMING ARTS

PERFORMING ARTS Last week our final two acts for the Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival were presented. Caleb Ogle received a Certificate of Merit for his outstanding piano solo and our dance team did another incredible job at Perth Convention Centre! A video of the choir’s One Big Voice performance at Perth Arena is available for purchase – a note regarding this has been attached with the newsletter. Don’t forget that there will be a terrific opportunity to see a sample of all these acts in one place on our Performing Arts Concert Evening at school 7pm on Wednesday, September 7. The evening will start at 6.30pm, with drinks and nibbles on sale. A schedule of act times will be placed on the noticeboard very soon.

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM

We’ve had a great response to the instrumental program being offered after school through PMI (Primary Music Institute), with many students enrolled to start small group and individual lessons in keyboard and guitar. Small group lessons are also offered for brass and woodwind. PMI offers individual lessons for $32.50 for 30 minutes. Small group lessons are $14.50 per student for 30 minutes (2 to 5 students). Whilst the lessons will be held here at school and will be a wonderful support to our school music program, parents will deal directly with PMI in all arrangements regarding lessons. If your child missed out on receiving a flyer about this instrumental program or has misplaced it, I can pass one on to them. Tim Maxwell (Performing Arts Coordinator)

PRE PRIMARY INDONESIAN ANGKLUN WORKSHOP

For three weeks during Pre Primary Indonesian classes, Pak Yan and Pak Adit, two very talented music teachers from Java, visited our school to teach students how to play the angklung.

The angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made from bamboo. Each angklung has 2-4 bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are tuned to octaves and the tubes are carved to have a resonant pitch when struck.

Students learnt how to correctly hold their angklung instrument and thoroughly enjoyed shaking them to make music. After three weeks of practice, with the help of Pak Tan, students were able to play some simple songs such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday.

The workshops provided students with a wonderful insight into Indonesian culture and music.
