The EMBLEM of this Institution portrays a man lying with

sickness being helped to rise, and given renewed life by

Christ, who is signified by the Cross, on which He died,

and which is a symbol of love.

The motto of the emblem, HE SHALL LIVE BECAUSE OF

ME, links this Institution with the XXXVIII International

Eucharistic Congress held in Bombay in December 1964,

of which it is the Chief Memorial. The motto is a constant

reminder to our Staff and Students that they are God's

collaborators in their care of human lives.

The colour scheme: The cross is WHITE, signifying purity

of spirit; the body of the man lying down is BLUE, signifying

aspiration towards heavenly things; and the background

is GOLD or YELLOW, signifying the flame of knowledge.

I. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Note: Considerable care has been taken to make the provisions ofthis Prospectus precise and comprehensive. The information is notexhaustive.

INTRODUCTION: The Catholic Church in India has always played animportant role in the fields of education, health care, social welfare anddevelopment of the community. The Catholic Bishops' Conference ofIndia (CBCI) in response to a felt need decided to establish a MedicalCollege and Teaching Hospital “to provide for the relief of suffering, topromote and preserve the health of the community and to give anexample of enlightened training in dedicated service, which ischaracteristic of Christian educational and social welfare institutions”.St. John’s Medical College and Hospital and School of Nursing werestarted in 1963, 1975 and 1980 respectively at Bangalore by theC.B.C.I. Society for Medical Education. The School of Nursing wasupgraded to the College of Nursing in 1989. In 1994 all the Institutionswere brought together as the St. John's National Academy of HealthSciences.

AIMS: While the Institution is intended primarily for training Catholicsand especially dedicated personnel like Religious Sisters who arerunning a large number of hospitals and dispensaries mainly in medicallyunderserved and rural areas of our country, it is open, like all othereducational institutions under Catholic auspices, to all personsirrespective of religion, caste or community.

The Institution seeks to make a qualitative contribution to health care,medical education and research through the training of medical,paramedical, nursing, health management, community health workers,and other personnel who are dedicated to healing in the spirit of Christ.

The Institution prepares students for the role of future leaders, loyal tothe highest ideals of the health profession. Today’s Doctors, Nursesand other Health Care Professionals are part of a team who delivercomprehensive health care.

Often they are called to be leaders in society helping in all developmentalactivities. Health is both a means and an end of development,improving the quality of life. The students in medical and health caresciences, therefore, should be conscious of social, economic andother factors, the improvement of which will bring about the necessarytransformation to make it possible for all in this country and in the worldto lead a healthy human existence.

II. HISTORY

The Catholic Church in India had long felt the need of adding a MedicalCollege to the many educational and social welfare institutions throughwhich, over the years, it has served the country. However, thecomplexities such a venture involved, delayed its active considerationuntil the proposal was pursued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference ofIndia. At the request of the C.B.C.I., the late Archbishop of Madras, theMost Rev. Louis Mathias, SDB, prepared and presented a report in1954, in which he reviewed the total requirement of the project. In1956, Archbishop Mathias with the aid of medical and financialexperts, submitted a comprehensive scheme to the Conference and inSeptember 1960, the C.B.C.I. took the decision to establish a MedicalCollege, with an attached hospital at Bangalore.

His Holiness Pope John XXIII agreed to the College being called afterhis Patron, St. John the Baptist, as a mark of his personal interest inthe project, and of his approval of its aims and ideals. The College was,accordingly, named “St. John’s Medical College” and opened intemporary premises at Bangalore in July 1963.

In the course of their Joint Pastoral issued in connection with theXXXVIII International Eucharistic Congress, held in Bombay in 1964,the Catholic Bishops of India announced their choice of the College

The College Hospital is intended to assist in the training and to renderservice in health care to all people irrespective of religion, caste orcommunity, particularly the underprivileged and disadvantaged.

OBJECTIVES : Under the overall policy of the CBCI Society for MedicalEducation, the objectives of the Institution are grouped as follows:

1. Excellence in all fields of health care education.

2. Adequate Christian formation of the students.

3. Upholding respect for life, from the moment of conceptionto its natural end.

4. A genuine feeling of compassion for the patients and theirfamilies as persons.

5. A special thrust to Community Health fostering thedimensions of participatory team work.

6. Serving the health needs of medically underserved areas ofour country and our medically underprivileged brethren.

7. Acquiring the ability to research, and application of theadvances in scientific knowledge to the relevant fields ofwork.

8. Striving towards promoting holistic health.

9. Acquiring an exemplary steadfastness to principles andmoral values so as to witness to a life of honesty andintegrity.

Right from its inception St. John’s set before it an ideal of excellencein academic courses as well as service to society, as a result of whichit has truly become holistic both in its outlook and in its approach to theproblems of community health.

This Institution of Health and Healing envisages also the training andparticipation of the community ( including the rural people and the slumdwellers) in health care in its preventive, promotive and rehabilitativeaspects.

The Institution expects its students to uphold the ethical values andprinciples of morality as interpreted by the Catholic Church. The

This choice receivedthe warm approval of His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, which was conveyedby him in a special message addressed to His Eminence, ValerianCardinal Gracias, the then President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferenceof India and President of the CBCI Society for Medical Education. HisHoliness has also established a scholarship in the College in his ownname, to be awarded, each year, to the best all-round studentcompleting the MBBS course.

The Corner Stone of the Project was blessed by His Holiness PopePaul VI at Bombay during the principal function of the EucharisticCongress, held on December 3, 1964, at which he officiated. It was laidat the Project site on July 27, 1965 by His Excellency Shri V.V. Giri,the then Governor of Karnataka, and later, President of India. On thecompletion of the buildings, the College was dedicated to the cause ofMedical Education, Research and Care, on September 29, 1968, at aceremony presided over by the late President of India, His Excellency,Dr. Zakir Hussain.

Prior to the completion of these buildings, the College was located inthe premises of St. Mary’s Industrial School and Orphanage, whichwere made available by His Grace Archbishop Thomas Pothacamuryof Bangalore for the teaching of pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects.

St. Martha’s Hospital conducted by the Sisters of the Good ShepherdCongregation was affiliated to the College for Clinical Teaching. TheHospital was extended and suitably equipped for the purpose. Thishospital provided a practical example of the spirit of service andsacrifice, which the College strives to make its own and carry beyonditself, to the homes of the patients and the community, both in theurban and in the rural areas. The affiliation of this Hospital to theCollege has been discontinued from 1983.

Campus : In June 1968, five years after its establishment, the Collegemoved to its permanent campus on a 140 acres site situated in theperiphery of the city of Bangalore. During the first phase of construction,the following were completed: the teaching centre (housing the pre-clinical and para-clinical departments and lecture theatres); fourblocks of students' hostel; and some residences for the teaching staff.

St. John’s Medical College Hospital: The construction work of thesecond phase consisting of a 800-bed hospital, Nurses’ hostel andresidences of Staff was started in April 1971. The out-patientdepartments were opened on December 8, 1975. Thereafter, the in-patient departments were opened gradually. With the third phase ofconstruction completed in 1987, the campus has all the requiredfacilities including a beautiful auditorium, with 1100 seats, from 1996,as a memorial of the Silver Jubilee of this Institution. At present St.John’s Medical College Hospital has 1200 in-patient beds, distributedamong the Departments of General Medicine, Medical Oncology,Endocrinology, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Obstetrics andGynaecology, Gynaecologic Oncology, Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery,Radiology, Psychiatry, Thoracic Surgery, Dental Surgery, PlasticSurgery, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology,Genito-Urinary Surgery, ENT diseases, Nephrology, Orthopaedics,Intensive Care, Cardiac Care, Cardiology, Neurology, Neuro-Surgery,Gastroenterology, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesiology, PhysicalMedicine & Rehabilitation, Pain and Palliative Care, Radio-immuno-Assay and Hemo-Dialysis. This is the teaching hospital of our College.

The College of Nursing is situated in the College & Hospital Sector.Started as a School of Nursing on July 1, 1980, it was raised to thestatus of a College of Nursing on September 25, 1989 and conductscourses in General Nursing & Midwifery, Basic B.Sc., Post CertificateB.Sc. P.B.D, Nsg, and M.Sc. Nursing Courses in Medical Surgery,Community Health, Paediatrics, Obst. and Gynae and Psychiatry.

In December 1994, the Institution was re-named as ST. JOHN'SNATIONAL ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES and five Institutesplaced under it:

3. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

3.1 Candidates having qualified for the M.B.B.S Degree from anyUniversity recognised by the Medical Council of India and shouldhave satisfactorily completed the Rotating Compulsory Internshipof one year before the starting of the courses, and registered withthe Indian Medical Council and thereafter preferably served in Indiafor a period of at least TWO years in medically underserved areas,recognised as such by this Institution are eligible to apply for thePost graduate Degree and Diploma courses.

3.2 A person can apply for any three degree courses. In specialities withboth P.G degree & diploma, a single appplication for the subject canbe made. Allotment of degree/diploma seats will be according to thefinal merit list.

3.3 Special consideration will be given to alumni of St. John's MedicalCollege who have served in medically underserved areas andunderprivileged people, recognised as such by the College.

4. APPLICATION PROCESS

Application forms for the P.G Entrance Exam 2016 will be availableONLINE ONLY at http://admissions.stjohns.in from 15th December2015. The last date for online application submission is 8th February2016, 11:59 pm . Beyond the deadline no application will beaccepted. Applications can be submitted only once and cannot beresubmitted.

5. APPLICATION FEE:

• APPLICATION FEE: Rs. 3000/- (includes Application formfees and Entrance Test fee for ONE (1) subject.

• Additional subject/s: Rs. 1,000/- per subject (upto a maximumof TWO (2) Additional Subjects).

6. PAYMENT MODE:

1. The application fee can be paid by online payment mode only

2. You can use a Credit Card, Debit Card or Net Banking formaking the payment online.

3. Please ensure that you get a confirmation for the amount paidonline. This will be provided to you online once your transactionhas been successfully completed.

4. When using a credit card/debit card/Net banking, if the transactionis not successful, please perform the following steps:

i. Check with your bank to see if the amount was debited.

ii. If the amount has been debited, please contact Local BankBranch office of your Bank to follow-up.

iii. If the amount has not been debited, and the transaction hasnot been successful, then try to make the payment again.

iv. If the transaction fails and you’ve been refunded after 24-48 hours, you will need to redo the payment process again.

Applications received by St. John’s Medical College withoutreceipt of application fees will not be registered.

7. PREREQUISITES BEFORE FILLING THE ONLINEAPPLICATION FORM

2. Please keep a softcopy of your recent passport photographand a scanned softcopy of your signature ready before fillingthe application form.

i. Specification for photograph: Recent colour passport-size photograph (taken after July 0 I, 2015), in JPEG/JPGformat not exceeding 80 KB.

ii. Specification for signature: A scanned softcopy of yoursignature in JPEG/JPG format not exceeding 80 KB on aCD/USB drive/Hard disk.

3. A valid E-mail ID and Mobile Number is mandatory for thesubmission of your Online Application. This E-Mail and Mobilenumber should be active till the declaration of re sult s. StJohn’s Medical College will send important information withregard to your application and examination on this registered E-Mail/Mobile number.

4. Please note that after the final submission all the particularsmentioned in the online application including Name of theCandidate, Subjects, Date of Birth, Address, Email ID etc.will be considered as Final and NO further modifications willbe allowed/entertained.

9. REGRISTRATION PROCESS

2. If you are a first time user, you will have to first register byclicking on the link provided for registration.

3. Fill up the registration form with required information.

4. Once you submit the above information, you will receive aSt.John’ s Medical College Entrance Test (SJMCET) U SER IDNUMBER and a Password to your registered Email lD by emailand/or to your registered mobile number by SMS.

5. Kindly make note of this carefully and quote this SJMCETUser ID Number for any enquiry that you may have and whencommunicating to us in any further correspondences.

6. Please Note: (1) Subsequent to receiving your SJMCET UserID number and Password, you will not be able to edit yourName, Email and Mobile Number. (2) In case you need tochange these fields then you will have repeat Step 1 to 3 andobtain a new SJMCET User ID and Password.

12. HALL TICKETS

• The Hall Tickets must be preserved for identification atsubsequent stages of selection, namely Interviews.

• The Entrance Examination will commence at 9.30 a.m. and theduration of paper is 3 hrs. No candidates will be allowed to enterthe Hall after 8.45 a.m.

13. EXAMINATION PATTERN

• The Examination will consist of multiple choice questions. Pleaserefer to the admission website http://admissions.stjohns.in fora Mock Test.

• The Entrance Examination Results will be the basis for furtherinterviews and final selection.

where the candidate studied for M.B.B.S. Course.

8. Junior Residency Certificate or Service Certificatefrom the competent authority (if applicable).

9. Certificates showing distinctions, scholarships,honours, medals etc. for MBBS only, if any.

10. Post-graduate diploma or degree certificates, if any.

11. A certificate from the head of the Institution lastattended, giving details of the number of attempts ateach examination and failures, if any.

12. A certificate showing extra-curricular activities / Sports(Intercollegiate/State only).

13. For former students of this Institution a Certificate ofservice in rural and underserved areas in this countryfrom the authority concerned and approved by theDirector of this Institution.

Note: Unless all the above mentioned ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES areproduced when called for Interview, no interview will be conducted.Migration and Transfer certificates are to be enclosed along with theoriginals. All Foreign students require a "No Objection Certificate" from

16. THE SELECTION PROCESS

16.1. There will be a Computer Based Test (CBT). This test will coverall the undergraduate M.B.B.S. subjects.

16.2. The examination commences at 9.30 a.m. and the duration of thepaper is 3 hrs. All candidates who wish to take the CBT are requiredto be in their assigned seats at the time, date and place stipulated.

16.3. Based on the performance in the test, candidates will be calledfor an interview at short notice before the Selection Committee.Candidates may have to appear for a Clinical test during theinterviews.

16.4. Candidates must come prepared to pay the fees and join the PostGraduate Course immediately thereafter.

16.5. Admission to various courses will be provisional and is subjectto confirmation of eligibility by the Rajiv Gandhi University ofHealth Sciences(RGUHS). The decision of the University withregard to eligibility is final. The selected candidate should obtainthe Eligibility Certificate personally from the University andsubmit it along with other certificates before paying the fees.

16.6. The duration of the various courses and syllabi will be as laiddown by the RGUHS from time to time. The date of commencementof the classes will be notified as per the calendar of events of theRajiv Gandhi University.

16.7. Any dispute regarding the admission procedure is subject to thejurisdiction of Courts in Bangalore only.

Note:

(a) A student who discontinues the course after admission but beforethe commencement of the course, will not be entitled to refund ofthe fees paid and deposits made to the Institution unless the seatthat has fallen vacant due to the discontinuation, is filled up byanother candidate. In such a case, an amount equal to 10% of thetotal fees payable will be deducted as service charges.

(b) If a student discontinues the course during the course period inorder to join another subject elsewhere or for any other reason, he/she will have to refund the entire stipend paid by the Institution upto the time of discontinuing and further will pay the fees for theremaining period of the course to the Institution, and shall also forfeitall the deposits and other fees paid to the Institution.

(c) The students are required to pay the prescribed fees once in everysix months i.e. in the months of July and January, of each academicyear. There will be a total of SIX installments for Degree Course andFOUR installments for Diploma Course.

(d) All the students are instructed to make payments of the entire termfees in one installment to St. John's Medical College Accountssection and no part payment will be accepted. The prescribed feesshould be paid within one month of the commencement of each term.Late payments will attract a penalty of Rs. 50/- per day which will haveto be paid along with the fee.

(e) Examination fees as prescribed by Rajiv Gandhi University ofHealth Sciences and other fees, if any, will be notified at the timeof admission or at the appropriate time.

(f) All candidates have to pay a caution deposit of Rs. 10,000/-, Librarydeposit of Rs. 3,000/- and laboratory deposit of Rs. 3,000/- at thetime of Admission. These amounts will be refunded, after deductionof dues, if any, when the student leaves the Institution on completionof the Course.

17. P.G. Students will get a stipend of Rs. 25,000/- per month.

19. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities of the P.G. students will be asdetermined by the Dean from time to time. They will be requiredto perform such work as may be needed in the legitimate interestof patient care/research etc., as may be decided by the Dean.However, it may be noted that the P.G. Programmes in thisInstitution are on a Pattern of Residency.

Candidates, giving wrong information in the application form or inthe annexures are liable to be expelled from the College at anytime during the course of studies and liable also to otherdisciplinary action by the College.
