Need a Christmas gift idea?
Rosaries brought back to St. Joseph Church from the parish Holy Land pilgrimage are available for purchase in the parish office. Simple in design and yet profound in symbolic significance, these rosaries were hand-crafted from the wood of olive trees by Christian
families living in Bethlehem. Your purchase of a rosary helps support these Christian families who, despite hardships and obstacles, strive to witness to Christ’s message of love. The olive wood rosaries are $15 each, payable by check (made out to St. Joseph Church) or cash. These make wonderful gifts for Christmas!

Advent and John the Baptist - The Second and Third Sundays of Advent feature the
Baptist who has come out of the desert to preach a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins. The Second Vatican Council called for a liturgical renewal of the
Church which included the themes we celebrate during Advent. Before the Council,
Advent carried with it a strong penitential character. While this character has been
retained, it has been modified to include other themes important for the believer to
contemplate during the Advent season. One such is John the Baptist, called the
precursor to Christ, and the last prophet to announce his coming (advent). While
there’s lots to say about John, including his miraculous conception, a work of God making things possible from what
was impossible, his association with the desert and the proclamation of the coming of the Messiah (Jesus), connects
him with the prophet Elijah. He emerges from the desert dressed like Elijah who was expected to return at the end of
the world. This was a signal that the old age was coming to an end and a new one was dawning. Hence, the urgency
of John’s message to repent to prepare for and enter into the new age. The new age is the coming of Jesus, the
fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies about him and his establishment of the New Covenant between God
and his people through his death and resurrection.
I share this with you here because it is difficult to fit all of this into a homily and allow it to be interesting. Let this
inform you about what you have heard in the gospels from this Sunday and last. This shows the beautiful and
profound way that God definitively speaks to his people who have waited for millennia for the coming of the
Messiah and how well he weaves together the scriptures from the Old Testament into the real persons of Jesus and
John. The Almighty has done great things for us and we rejoice and are glad in it! For disciples of Jesus, we know
that the Kingdom of God has been established by Jesus through the New Covenant, his preaching, teaching signs and
works. The Baptist’s prophetic words ring true for us through the lens of Jesus to let nothing impede our love for
and journey with Jesus. He continues to point out, “Look, behold the Lamb of God,” to us as Christ comes to us in
the Eucharist under the form of consecrated bread and wine. Let his words and witness always direct us to Jesus and
away from anything that distracts us from him.
Retirement Fund for Religious Collection -A religious sister writes, “When we see the generous response of so
many thousands of persons in order to help us, religious men and women, we are left speechless.” Senior sisters,
brothers, and religious order priests across the country send heartfelt thanks and prayers for your donation to last
week’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection.
Blessing of Parents before Childbirth - will occur this weekend after the Masses at the Shrine of the Holy Family
(near the Brockman Street exit of the church and the reconciliation room) after all of the Masses. Parents and their
families are especially invited to participate.
Confessions before Christmas - Please note the confession times found in this bulletin. This year with Christmas
occurring on a Monday, I have reconfigured the confession times as listed. Since we will be hosting a communal
penance with individual confessions on December 21st in close proximity to Christmas with many priests hearing
confessions, I have not scheduled any extra confession times like in years past. Instead, please utilize the communal
penance as well as the confessions being heard for an hour on Saturdays. On December 23, both parish priests will
be hearing confessions during the scheduled time.
Christmas Mass A!endance - to help you with planning which Christmas Mass you will a$end, here’s an idea of
a$endance for each Mass based on historical data:
· 4:00 PM in the church - packed
· 4:00 PM in the school - almost full
· 6:30 PM in the church - although a new time, it is nearly full
· 9:00 PM in the church - although a new time, usually half full
· 9:00AM in the church Christmas Day - approaching full but is roomy
