St. John the Baptist—Whenever the nativity of John the Baptist falls

on a Sunday, it is celebrated that day because it is so important to

God’s preparation for the birth of Jesus and his adult ministry. St.

John is the herald of the Lord and began doing so in the womb when

he leapt with joy when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited Elizabeth

with her son in utero.

The anniversary of the birth of St. John the Baptist allows him to exercise again his role as

herald. John was born to two loving parents who protected and nurtured him. The

political, social and economic environment within which he was born could be hostile to his

survival and life. Yet, he had the strength of his family to support him as he grew and

matured.

Many have been following the news coming from our borders that children and parents

who have entered our country illegally have been separated. The children have been

placed in camps without the nurturance and support of their parents. However this action

is evaluated, from the point of view of humanity, morality or the light of the Gospel, it is an

act that gravely violates the necessary bond that exists between parents and their children

whether the family is in the country illegally or not.

The commemoration of the birth of the Baptist heralds the dignity of life and that of the

human family. We rightly decry a child being aborted from his/her mother’s womb. So,

too, does our faith lead us to decry the actions against families that is currently occurring on

our borders. The defense of life extends from conception to natural death. Family life

needs to be defended as well. A child’s place is with his/her parents unless there is a grave

reason for the separation. Catholics in good conscience are urged to work for the protection

of all human life. Now is the time to advocate for families be they classified as illegal aliens

or not.
