What is Catholic Social Teaching?

This is the first in a series of brief discussions about Catholic Social Teaching that we will be sharing with you in the bulle-tin from time to time.

Catholic social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society shared through various pa-

pal, conciliar and episcopal documents. It is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's special love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice.

The reason we call these teachings “social” is because we, who are made in God's image, share a communal, social nature. Therefore, we are called to reach out and to build relationships of love and justice. Catholic social teaching is built on a com-mitment to the poor.

Excerpted from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website. Learn more at www.usccb.org.

Please join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as we learn more about Catholic Social Teaching through our Secondo Speakers Series the third Saturday of each month following the 5:00 Mass. Look for the announce-ment of speakers in the bulletin. Wine and cheese will be provided, and time for discussion and socializing.

Restock the SVdP Food Pantry The food pantry is getting low, so next time you are at the grocery store, grab a few extra non-perishables and drop them off in the boxes at the entrances to the church. Thanks for all your help!

Our Lady of Lourdes February 11

I do not promise to give you happi-ness in this world, but in the next.

Our Lady of Lourdes knows deeply our wish for happiness and freedom from sorrows. She makes Bernadette know that the world can-not offer us this happiness and freedom that we truly seek. This is an important reflection to make as we go through the hardships and temptations of this world. The Blessed Moth-er’s words are meant not to be discouraging, but they are meant to direct our hearts to the place where they may find fulfillment.

Parish School of Religion Update All the good thing we’re able to do, think, and believe are the result of God’s grace working in our life. He gives us sanctifying grace, His life, through the Sacra-ments, and actual graces every moment of the day. Our job is to say yes to the grace He offers. This is the focus of the seventh grade class this week as we

talk more about the spiritual life. The seventh grade has been looking at the Church not only as a material institution full of rules and rituals, but also as a spir-itual reality. Thank you for your prayers!

Donations Needed for PSR Family Day If you happen to be at the store, PSR is collecting small hygiene items (travel size tooth paste, tooth brush, sham-poo, lotion, soap, body wash, socks, gloves, hat, small size water bottles) in or-der to put together packages to give to the homeless people we may encounter in our day to day lives.

There is a collection box in the back of church. Thank you for your help!

Gift Bearers Need at Mass

Right after the collec-tion is taken up at the Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses, at least two volunteers are always needed to bring forward the gifts to the priest.

If you are so inclined to help in this way on an occasional or regular basis, please feel free to make your way to one of the ushers right after the collec-tion has been taken up so that you can assist in bringing forward the gifts.

Bathroom Remodel

We are beginning a re-modeling project on the bathrooms in the Parish Hall on Monday.

We are beginning with the men’s bath-room and will then do the women’s so that there is always one available. If your bathroom is out of order, use the small handicap bathroom next to the women’s or the bathroom upstairs in the southwest corner of the church.

Funeral Lunches The torch has been passed to two new leaders who are working to streamline the process. They will soon be using

Signup Genius to help organize what every-one is bringing. So keep watching the bul-letin for more details!

If you would like to be added to the list to either bring a dish or help out during lunches, please contact the parish office at 314-726-1221 or [email protected].

St. Joseph Day Potluck Save the date for a Parish Potluck on Saturday, March 14 at 6:00 pm. Keep watching the bulletin for more details and to RSVP.

Statement from Archbishop Carlson On Medicaid Expansion Initiative

Archbishop Carlson Reiterates Missouri Bishops’ Support of Initiative No. 2020-063 Archbishop Robert J. Carlson issued a statement regarding the Missouri bishops’ position on the ballot initiative supporting expansion of Medicaid in the state:

“In October of 2019, I joined my brother Catholic bishops of Missouri in issuing a statement of support for the expansion of MO HealthNet, the Medicaid program in our state. The initiative, which will appear on the ballot this fall for placement in the Missouri Constitution, will expand affordable healthcare coverage for the most vulnerable among us.

Recently, questions, concerns and speculation have surfaced regarding an argument that the federal pro-life protec-tions in Medicaid—secured through the Hyde Amendment more than 40 years ago—would be terminated, putting government funds at risk for allocation to abortions.

We acknowledge this concern; however, with abiding trust in our Lord Jesus Christ, we cannot operate out of fear and speculation of the unknown. Our commitment to life is unwavering and lives are at stake. We must make deci-sions based on what we currently know to be true:

• With greater access to health insurance through Medicaid, we are saving lives and ensuring better health out-comes for our families in need.

• The risk for elimination of the Hyde Amendment is unlikely, based on its 40-plus-year history and polls show-ing that the majority of Americans oppose public funding of abortion.

• In the unlikely event that the Hyde Amendment is repealed, pro-life states like Missouri would pursue every legal avenue to prevent public funding for abortion through the state Medicaid programs.

• Medicaid reimbursements are vital to the healthcare delivery system, ensuring continued care to the most needy, including care provided by our Catholic hospitals.

• Many of our Catholic hospitals provide services that are left unpaid, putting the future of those institutions at risk.

The Missouri bishops’ support for this initiative is consistent with our commitment to life. I encourage you all to read more on the Missouri Catholic Conference website and in the St. Louis Review.

Families depend on decent housing and health care to flourish. Let us pray to God the Father to continue to guide us in our careful advocacy around legislative issues that affect the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters.”

- Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis
