Annual Sporting News Highlights

PREMIER LEAGUE TROPHY VISITS ST JOSEPH'S COLLEGE Last week saw St Joseph's College receive a visit from the Premier League Trophy. As part of the continued relationship between Chelsea FC Foundation and St Joseph's College, the Premier League champions gave pupils and staff alike the chance to have their photo taken with the Premier League trophy as well as asking two Premier League Ambassadors questions about the trophy and its history. For example, did you know that the three ribbons on the Premier League Trophy represent the colours of the champions’ socks, shorts and shirt? And did you know that the captain of the winning team is the third lion added to the two lions on the trophy itself, as per the England team‘s nickname “Three Lions”? Students from the St Joseph's College Junior Futsal Academy as well as Chelsea’s Futsal College Programme had team photos taken with the trophy and really enjoyed their afternoon in the presence of such a prestigious visitor. This event culminates what has been a fantastic season for both the Junior Futsal Academy and Futsal College Programme, who have had many successes on and off the pitch, with players chosen to represent Chelsea FC Colleges Representative Teams as well as competitive performances in Futsal FA Cups at junior level.

SURREY SCHOOLS’ DAY CRICKET TRIP

On 12th May, 40 boys from Year 7-9 attended the annual Surrey Schools’ Day at the Kia Oval. The boys absolutely loved the day and were able to watch an enthralling Royal London One-Day Cup encounter between Surrey and Kent and also take part in various Kwik Cricket activities around the ground. Despite the early rain, the boys managed to stay in excellent spirits all day and were rewarded for their constant (AND LOUD!) support with a fantastic win for Surrey! Alongside this, world-renowned stars, such as Jason Roy and Kumar Sangakkara, came over to sign and take photos with the boys to provide a truly memorable experience which I have no doubt they will never forget! We are already very excited for next year’s schools’ day. Take a look at the photos.

YEAR 7 RUGBY

It has been a turbulent season for the fledgling Year 7 rugby team, who over the course of their short playing career have demonstrated a serious amount of grit, athleticism and not least, rugby talent to give Eddie Jones a selection headache in the future.

Training started early in the autumn term and the boys were quick to find their feet on the pitch, despite few having any previous experience at the sport. Their first tournament saw them play opposition such as Harris South Norwood, John Fisher and Quest with notable performances from Ephraim Prempeh; Joshua Ali-Baba Chikelu and Michel Goldson. From there the boys went from strength to strength, storming their way to a victory against Harris Crystal Palace with an impressive display of ball-handling, some excellent strike running and formidable rucking talent from Fred Fianko-Awuku and Andy Aheto.

The season concluded with mammoth 6-team tournament hosted by ourselves along with Streatham and Croydon Rugby Club at our playing field. Although our final position on the day was not favourable, the potential and optimism for the future is there.

An excellent first season for all – well done.

SPECIAL MENTION A special mention must go to Calvin Mukeba who has gone from strength-to-strength and recently been promoted to the U16 Elite Development Program at Harlequins Rugby Club. He recently represented against other professional teams including Exeter, Bath, Wasps and Bristol where he has managed to score three tries in total. Watch this space………..
