ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
From the Pastor’s Laptop
Father Mark Wagner St. John Vianney, the
patron saint of parish priests, once said: “Oh, how great is a priest! The priest will not u n d e r s t a n d t h e greatness of his office till he is in Heaven. If he understood it on earth, he would die, not of fear, but of love… The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.”
Only in heaven will we understand how important the role of the priest is in the plan of God. God’s plan was to save us in Christ, and that the salvation would reach us in every age by means of His “other Christs,” the priests.
We can see this plan of God clearly in today’s reading from the Gospel of Mark (Mark 6:7-13). (I knew I liked the Gospel of Mark!) In this short passage we see that the apostles were the first priests, sent out with the same powers that the Catholic Church says belong to priests. The Catholic Church teaches that priests have the power of exorcism. Any priest can perform “minor exorcisms” (major exorcisms require permission from the local bishop). The Church says that priests
(and deacons) have the authority to preach homilies. The Church also teaches that only priests can use holy oil to administer the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick which gives healing and forgiveness of sin to the sick person.
Here are the words of today’s Gospel which reveal to us how God shows His love for us by the gift of the priesthood: “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits… So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.” (Mark 6:7,12-13)

Respect Life
“Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also
incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the
importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or
inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its
presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties? ‘If personal and social
sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of
acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away’.”
— Pope Francis in Laudato Si, 120
By Courtney Vallejo, parishioner
I realize that the title of this article might have struck some of you as odd. A little different from what we’re used to seeing in the bulletin, but after some reflection time it’s a question I’d like to ask each of us. What If Everyone Yelled During Mass?
The following article comes from a blog post I wrote a few years ago for Catholicmom.com, when my kids were younger. My son was four at the time and my daughter was five. My son had started to try to say the Mass parts like his big sister, but what I was finding is that he would only say the first and last word and when he got to that last word he would yell it. At the end of the response to Jesus being raised above the altar before Communion, he’d yell HEALED at the end of the response, “Only say the word and I shall be healed.” Now traditionally this is a time when people are quiet and prayerful and
now it’s being interrupted by a little boy yelling. Or course I’m worried that it’s distracting but I’m also worried people will just think he’s yelling for no reason.
I want to tell everyone (after he does this) “Did you understand him, he's saying the Mass parts. As his mom, I generally “shhhh” him after his loud outburst and remind him not to yell, but recently I’ve been catching myself when I do this. Something doesn’t seem right in my reprimand. He’s participating in Mass, he’s excited to be responding with everyone and he’s saying the word healed in response to Jesus’ presence. While I don’t want him
yelling and distracting others during Mass, his zeal is inspiring. Shouldn’t we all be joyfully yelling our responses during Church? Shouldn’t we show our excitement about what we’re saying?
So where is the balance? I'm not saying bullhorns and balloons, I'm just saying I don’t want to squash his enthusiasm for Mass and for participating; instead I want to encourage him to participate with us. I’m left trying to encourage him to respond in Mass, while reminding him we don’t have to yell. But I’m starting to think maybe we should! Maybe the 4 year old has it right and maybe he’s the one teaching me instead of vice-versa.
“Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth; break into song; sing
praise. Sing praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp, and
melodious song. With trumpets and sound of the horn shout with joy to
the King, the Lord.” (Psalm 98:4-6 )

Parish Stewardship — a way of life
By: Maria F. Delgado-Braun
If you attend the 5:45pm Mass at St. Joseph’s, you are sure to find Deann faithfully serving as sacristan. Deann devotes a great portion of her time to our St. Joseph’s parish where she is an active member of the Liturgical Ministry. Deann serves as EM, lector and sacristan for our daily Masses and coordinates the Friday night Holy Hours. Her love for our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament is the source of her spiritual life and prayer. Besides these responsibilities, she c o o r d i n a t e s t h e F i r s t H o l y Communion Masses and makes sure that the children, parents and catechists know all that is expected. During the last three weeks prior to the grand date when the children will receive the Lord in the Eucharist, Deann gives them instruction and covers all the logistics associated with the Mass. She practices with the children and teaches them how to receive with reverence and love. We are so blessed to have great stewards of their talents at our St. Joseph’s parish, and Deann is one great example. Thank you, Deann!

(Mark 6:7, 12-13)

CORRESPONSABILIDAD (STEWARDSHIP)
Por: Maria F. Delgado-Braun
Leer, Meditar, Orar y Vivir
