COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

HAVING PURPOSE Jonathan Doyle the author of the series ‘How to Live Well’ argues that ‘the fundamental meaning of our existence is to contribute and to give of ourselves in relationship with others”. Do you ever ask yourself the question “When am I happiest in my life?” There are moments of great happiness when we achieve

success, celebrate births and anniversaries or overcome challenges. Beside these, I would suggest that the happiest, most fulfilling times of life are when we engage in service or caring for other people. Caring is a deeply human experience. A desire to care and to contribute is in our DNA as human beings. The key to happiness and personal growth is linked to the concept of purpose and having purpose is deeply related to how we care for others and contribute in a positive way to our community, our school and our family. A community, school or family with a healthy culture has a strong focus on care for others and on building positive relationships. This belief underpins our strong focus on pastoral care and on developing strong partnerships with families. Our teachers and leaders make the care of your children their highest priority. I know that parents and students appreciate the extra time and effort made on a day-to-day basis by our staff. We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong culture of care and commitment within our school communities. We also appreciate the wonderful support we receive from parents who share our belief in the importance of pastoral care and support us when behavioural issues arise. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Congratulations Year 12

Congratulations to Year 12 who over the past two weeks have been sitting their trial HSC exams, which conclude on Monday.

I commend to you a letter received from Mrs Dianne Roberts , HSC Exam Presiding Officer

Just a brief note, re the HSC students who we supervised in their trial exams last week and today. As you are aware, I have been supervising exams for many years and Sonia for about the last ten....It has been an absolute pleasure to be associated with the Year 12 students at the Regional... They come into the examination room without any fuss or noise, they sit quietly while everyone else comes into the room, listen to instructions and then "get on with their exam". After the exam, they hand up their paper, with a smile and a thank you to the supervisors and leave the room as quietly as they came in ....... Their behaviour and manners cannot be faulted in anyway.

They should be very proud of themselves, as should their parents and the school.

The supervisors and I would like to wish them well in the HSC and say a big thank you to them for making our job so easy.

Regards,

Di

St Joseph’s Regional College (2014)

Over the past week the College Leadership Team and Senior Pastoral Coordinators have been conducting interviews for Year 11 students. My personal thanks goes out to all staff involved in this process. The overall enrolment of St Joseph’s Regional College for 2014 is looking very strong, with our junior years being fully subscribed and senior cohort population increasing. A key indicator of how well a school is progressing is definitely reflected by the willingness of families to entrust their sons and daughters to the care of a highly professional teaching and support staff who share in a vision of “Excellence.” I would like to personally thank all staff for the wonderful work they are doing with pursuing “excellence” here at the College. In addition, this pursuit of excellence is reflected in the wonderful student leaders we have here at the College. Last week you had the pleasure of reading Ashleigh Hales College Captain’s Speech at our Year 11 Information Evening. This week I commend to you Andrew Newbound’s speech. I am sure you will agree that both of our College Captain’s speeches encapsulate the spirit of St Joseph’s Regional College. Andrew Newbound’s speech: Good evening parents, teachers and students. Hi, I’m 2471 2958 according to the Board of Studies, but for you tonight, I am Andrew Newbound, one of the 2013 College Captains here at St Joseph’s Regional College. At many times, the Higher School Certificate is often referred to as the H-Stress-C, however Ashleigh and I are here this evening to reassure you that it is possible to manage much of the stress associated with the HSC, particularly with the abundant opportunities and support networks offered by St Joseph’s Regional College. Tonight, we hope to provide you with an insight into what senior life at the College entails, and how our personal journeys have been shaped by the College community, both inside and outside the classroom. For the HSC, I am studying Advanced English, Studies of Religion II, Business Studies Economics, as well as Mathematics Extension 1, and Mathematics Extension 2 – having completed Physics in the preliminary year – subjects which I am deeply passionate about and as such benefit me now and into the future. Though I did not select subjects primarily because I was good at them, the deep passion which I experience for each of them has enabled me to achieve my potential – and believe it or not, study does occasionally even feel enjoyable. As is experienced by most, my transition into the culminating two years of a thirteen year educational journey has been more than just a change of year group, instead it has presented itself with brand new challenges and opportunities. In addition to driving privileges, senior students here at the college do truly experience a stronger relationship with the teaching staff. Aside from being very professional, they are always prepared to give up their own time (including lunch times) in order to ensure that we are able to get the most out of our time at the college. This occurs throughout the teaching faculty, with Mr Lutton, our Leader of Curriculum prepared to go the extra mile through hands on work to ensure that students are able to best meet the challenges, and experience the rewards of college life – and no, I was not paid to say that. In preparing students to best succeed, the Homework Hub is provided as an alternative study space every afternoon until 4:30 or 5 o’clock, in addition to the beautifully positioned Study Centre where students go during study periods, complete with Mrs Tinsey’s brand new Careers cube. Speaking of our careers team, Mrs Tinsey and Mrs Bale just recently held an insightful career transition evening for all Year 12 students at the college to provide us with exceptional knowledge and motivation about what is able to come when the HSC is but a stressful, distant memory. In conjunction with the Mid North Coast Careers Expo which all of year 12 shall be attending tomorrow, this night really established the numerous entry pathways students at the College are able to access to begin yet another stage in their life.

Page 4: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T3, Wk4

Extending upon the spiritual journey engaged within junior years the senior reflection days, and Year 12 retreat provided by Ms Swain and her team really allow us to connect as a year group, and reflect as an individual in ways which only mature students are able to. Despite the stressful nature brought upon by assessment periods (broken up of course by exam-free days), it is this spiritual engagement which most palpably reinforces our faith and allows us to open our minds to understanding the importance of the HSC and how it relates to our overall journey in life. This, no doubt will not only help us in our future exams, but also in meeting new challenges in our lives after being here at the College.

For success to really occur, parents, teachers and students all need to be on the same page, particularly during the rollercoaster HSC journey. From my experience, this is most true in Extension courses where both students and teachers do far more than the typical 8:45 to 3:15 day. Within these courses, students undergo additional class time before and/or after school to learn and use knowledge beyond what is learnt within normal class time, with dedicated students able to reap substantial rewards. In this relationship, parents can most certainly not be forgotten, bracing themselves on a weekly basis for the strain of waking up a teenager up, up to an hour earlier than usual to ensure that these exceptional commitments can be met. Having received a 99 in Extension 1 and an 88 in Extension 2 Mathematics in 2012, I can vouch for the effort that parents make and that these teachers contribute to each and every lesson, with teachers of Extension English and Extension History and Hospitality similarly ensuring that their students are able to receive remarkable marks to complement the remarkable effort – often needing to recognise the delicate process of communicating with teenagers prior to coffee kicking in.

As senior students at a college of 1000+ students across 6 year groups (including 225 new Year 7 students commencing in 2014, to ensure that their educational future is secured), ages ranging from 11 to 19, studying 72 subjects, with 1,572,480 combinations possible (yes, it was a slow Saturday when I worked that one out), there is evidently a deep sense of leadership amongst all of us, not only in the classroom, but in how we act, wear our uniform, present ourselves – it’s another level for sure, but it grants us the skills and responsibility that we can take with us later into life. With or without badges, senior students here at the college are all leaders.

Into the future, both Ashleigh and I intend on going to university to further pursue our individual fields of expertise, allowing ‘Veritas Liberabit’ to remain strong, as it has done so for our 6 years of education at the College. The truth has not only set us free individually, but as a whole community, and I am proud to say that it will do the same for every single person here next year. Each journey at the college is unique; however one thing remains constant, we are all united under this motto. The question is now: ‘How will the truth set YOU free?’

Assistant Principal Appraisal

Dear Parents During Term 3 on Tuesday, 3rd September, Cath Eichmann, St Joseph’s Regional College Assistant Principal will be involved in an assistant principal appraisal process as part of her contract renewal conditions with the Catholic Schools Office. The appraisal process seeks information from a variety of people associated with the parish school. The process aims to highlight the positive aspects of the assistant principal’s performance and identify areas for further development. A timeline will be constructed to suit the needs of the parish school community. A panel consisting of a diocesan parish school principal, a fellow assistant principal and an education consultant from the Catholic Schools Office will conduct the appraisal. The full assistant principal appraisal process involves:

• a staff survey and staff interviews • an interview with the principal • an interview with the parish priest • interviews with any parents who wish to present • a formal interview with the assistant principal by the panel • a self-appraisal report completed by the assistant principal

Any parents who wish to make contact with the panel are welcome to do so by contacting Tonia Flanagan (02 6622 0422) before the appraisal date. Thank you for your support of the parish school’s leadership team. Dirk Botha Assistant Director, Lismore Catholic Schools Office

SCHOOL FEES Many thanks to all of those families who have paid their school fees and to those who are committed to the ongoing payment of fees. To operate our schools efficiently and with the best possible facilities, school fees are the most critical component of the means of resourcing our schools. Currently there is a substantial shortfall in the budgeted school fee collection rate which means there is financial pressure on the operating budgets of individual schools. Any payment of outstanding fees would therefore be most appreciated. Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) include:

If I am having difficulty keeping up with paying fe es, what can I do? We are really keen to assist anyone who is experiencing difficulty with paying fees. All family circumstances are different and we would like to hear from people so that we can provide financial assistance during difficult times. All school fee issues are kept completely confidential. Please phone Trudi Hosking at Parish Administration – 6588 7444 Can I adjust my Direct Debit amount? Definitely. We’re only too happy to discuss this with parents and negotiate an appropriate plan for individual families. What is the Fee Assistance Program? The Fee Assistance Program is designed specifically for people experiencing financial hardship or other special circumstances, short term or long term. Please phone Trudi Hosking for further information. The established partnership of schools working with parents to provide the best possible education for their children is commendable. Thank you again for your ongoing support. John McQueen Parish Director Education

NAIDOC Week- ‘Walk with Me’ Last Wednesday, 31st July Year 7 students from our College celebrated NAIDOC Week with a coastal walk from Sea Acres. All our Year 7 Indigenous students invited a non-Indigenous friend to the Yun Yi Barragay “Walk with Me”, Coastal Walk. The students had the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the original custodians of this area and experienced Birpai culture first hand through story, music and dance. Please enjoy the recount of the day below written by Shaneiva Chatfield and Laura Bennett

“We loved the Yun Yi Barragay walk. We enjoyed the beach, and the coastal walk. We had a great time learning how to do the pipi dance. There was a strangler fig around a tree that was over 200 years old. We learned that if we were in the wild and lost we would be able to tell if something is safe or not to eat by rubbing it under our arm, then on the outside of our lip and then just on the inside of our lip. We found many types of bush tucker and other natural resources that the Birpai people have used for many years. We found out ways that the Birpai people would have used plants and other natural resources as an essential tool. It was such an awesome day! We would like to send a special thank you to Nardja, Steve and Dennis. Shaneiva and Laura

WALKATHON 2013

This major fundraising event allows students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and have this week been given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Cath Eichmann at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

Seasons for Growth for Parents:

Supporting your child following separation and divo rce

Parent Invitation

Parent Assembly is delighted be offering a new prog ram for parents this term. In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese Of Lismore. We are proud to be part of a pilot of the brand new program, Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your chi ld following separation or divorce.

For a long time our Diocesan Schools have offered the highly successful Seasons for Growth® program for children and young people. For many years, parents whose children have participated in the Seasons for Growth® Young People’s Program have been asking, ‘Is there a program that can help parents, too’?

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It will be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions and is for parents only.

The date and time are dependent on the availability of the group

Cost: free of charge

For more information or to express your interest in being a part of the Seasons for Growth for Parents trial this term, please contact Peta Rourke – 0400 420 614 or [email protected] Supporting Families Dear Parents and Carers, We have some families in our school community that are currently facing some significantly challenging medical hardships. We are trying to support these families through these difficult times by providing meals to help ease the burden. Donations of meals ie: casseroles etc would be warmly received and greatly appreciated. These care packages will be delivered to our families regularly to provide continued support and let them know they are in our thoughts. If you could find some time to help, please label your meals with ingredients and deliver them to the school office. A big thankyou to the parents who have already contributed to this need. Your generosity was accepted with great appreciation and smiles ☺ Thanking you in advance for your support.
