“The Truth will set you free”

COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE LOVE OF LEARNING Our schools and teachers are focused on ensuring that powerful learning is occurring in our classrooms. To achieve this, our teachers strive to make their teaching purposeful, engaging and relevant. With the support of our Catholic Schools Office our teachers and leaders have been working hard to ensure that our schools are learning communities where students find pleasure and joy in learning. Research cited by Stipek and Seal in “Motivated Minds: Raising Children to Love Learning” shows that children are motivated to learn when:

They are raised to feel competent and autonomous; They are secure in their relationships with others; They feel capable and skilled; They have some choice and control over their learning; They feel loved, supported and respected by their parents and

teachers; and They believe that intelligence isn’t fixed and they can achieve

success by working hard.

We also believe that by continuing to develop a strong culture of learning, our schools provide students with the best opportunities to learn, thrive and achieve their personal best.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Student Leadership at St Joseph’s Regional College Increasingly at St Joseph’s Regional College, we are learning of the role of student leadership, in the formation of all students on their journey to adulthood. At this week’s assembly, the St Joseph’s Regional community was inspired by eight of our current Year 11 students who delivered their 2014 College Captain speeches. Prior to delivering their speech, each candidate met individually with SRC Coordinator, Mr Daniel O’Mullane and me. It became quickly self-evident to me that each of these young people has the personal attributes and capacity to fulfil the role of College Captain. Indeed, this year it has been decided to broaden the base of leadership in the College by introducing the role of College Vice Captain. Listed below are some key quotes in each of the speeches delivered last Wednesday: Congratulations to:

Shaun Hinton Kade Madigan Jamie Lightfoot Sam Turner

Lisa Fraser Tahnee Borg Erin Badewitz Britney Avery

Shaun Hinton: Today I am speaking on behalf of the average regional student ... which I think makes me extremely relatable to students across the board. Students can come to me with new ideas and concepts about the College’s future knowing that I am on the same page. Kade Madigan: I am friendly, incredibly modest about my leadership abilities, approachable, always try my hardest and am willing to listen to any ideas you have to improve school life. Jamie Lightfoot: Having been part of the SRC this year, and part of leadership conferences and summits I have learnt so much about being a leader - things I now want to give back to the College.

Sam Turner: I want to give you the best next year at St Joseph's Regional I possibly can. But the thing is, I can't do it by myself - That's not the sort of leader I want to be. I need your help. Lisa Fraser: I love this school; I think it's a fantastic environment and we've got a really good College spirit here. What other school has teachers who dress up as firemen and dance around with a deranged bear to encourage students to walk along a beach? Tahnee Borg: I think I would be a great College representative because I am always so proud to say that I attend St Joseph's Regional College - and I am so proud of who I represent. Erin Badewitz: I'm passionate about what I believe in. If I was to be captain, I would try to be the voice for us, the students. Britney Avery: I believe that the role of College Captain is more than just a badge and a title. It is about how you act, it is about doing not just saying. It is about my example… it is about my words and my actions.

Once again, congratulations to all students who have put themselves forward for this very special role of service at St Joseph’s Regional College.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey Principal

YEAR 11 - Young People and Risk Taking Year 11 students will attend the RRISK (Reduce Risk, Increase Student Knowledge) seminars scheduled for Thursday, 7th November, 2013 at Port Panthers Club, Port Macquarie. Each week we will feature an article in regards to the program.

Risk-taking in adolescence it is an essential part of learning and personal development. Every healthy adolescent takes risks as he or she grows towards independence. Most researchers agree that if there is no risk there is no growth. A common problem for some young people is their inability to evaluate the potential risks and consequences of everyday behaviour. Thrill seeking, speeding, the desire to impress one’s friends; feelings of invincibility and the search for new experiences are all motivating forces that drive many teenagers. As a result they are over represented in every category of risk taking resulting in injury and trauma.

The RRISK Program aims to reduce risk-taking behaviour associated with alcohol and drug use, driving and partying amongst year 11 students in the North and Mid North Coast of NSW. RRISK is relevant to the social life, developmental stage and concerns of adolescents. It extends the school based drug education and road safety curriculum by providing opportunities for senior high school students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills to reduce risk taking and develop safer celebrating strategies.

Over 4500 students from more than 59 high schools from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads have registered to attend one of 10 RRISK Seminars. This year, two additional seminars will be held in Port Macquarie and Kempsey to meet the growing demand. If you have a year 11 student in your family, encourage them to attend.

Port Macquarie Panthers Auditorium 7th November

Research shows that RRISK is effective in reducing young driver crashes by 44%

The largest study ever undertaken into young driver behaviour was conducted by the George Institute of International Health and published in 2009. RRISK was identified as the only program to have resulted in a 44% reduction in road crashes for participants. The researchers consider RRISK a best practice program because it builds resilience by equipping young people with strategies and practical skills to manage risks in their social life and on the roads as drivers and passengers.

Look for information about the RRISK Program on the RRISK website www.rrisk.com.au and in this newsletter over the coming weeks.

Youth Mass Thank you for all the students, family and friends that joined us for the Father’s Day Youth Mass at St Agnes’ Parish last weekend. Our musicians and singers did a wonderful job under the direction of Mrs Leanne Johnson and Mrs Sharon Green. Fr Donnelly was touched by the presentation made by Mrs Eichmann on behalf of the school community and many students joined the BBQ and activities held in the HUB afterwards. Operation Christmas Child Thank you to all the Pastoral Care groups who handed in their shoe boxes this week that were overflowing with gifts of love. Operation Christmas Child is an international relief project that brings God’s hope and joy to children in over a hundred countries. Our College community has made a significant contribution and know the joy it will bring to so many. Thank you to our Youth Ministry Trainee, Jasmin Ryan (pictured) for coordinating this project. HSC Prayer Sponsors The HSC is fast approaching, as our Year 12 students know all too well. One way we are able to support our students is through prayer. If you would like to be a prayer sponsor this is how it works. A prayer sponsor indicates their interest in praying for a student by calling the school office. Information will then be sent to you about a particular student you can pray for and when they will be writing their exams. We can let them know who is praying for them or you can remain anonymous. We also gather as a school community before each exam and have special prayers prepared by subject teachers to support our students during this stressful time.
