COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

MORE THAN A GREAT EDUCATION During the coming week Catholic schools throughout the state celebrate “Catholic Schools’ Week”. The theme for this year is ‘more than a great education’. This theme draws our attention to the distinctive features of Catholic schools.

Our Parish schools have a commitment to the following:

• Spiritual formation. Students have the opportunity to learn more about their faith in formal Religious Education classes and develop their own faith and spirituality. Retreats and reflection days help students to develop relationships with God and with each other. Community service programs provide opportunities to put into practice some important Christian values such as respect, compassion and reaching out to those in need.

• Pastoral Care is a major focus of Catholic schools. Our goal is to ensure that every student is known personally and has the opportunity to develop in a caring, supportive environment. In our secondary schools, pastoral coordinators lead a team of pastoral teachers who have responsibility for around 24 students each.

• A holistic education is central to the philosophy of Catholic schools. An extensive co-curricular program gives students wonderful opportunities to develop their personal gifts and talents. Our schools offer numerous sports, have bands for all levels of musical ability, choirs, public speaking and debating, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and youth ministry activities.

• The pursuit of excellence is a mantra and a perennial goal of our Catholic schools. The author Jim Collins reminds us that ‘the good is the enemy of great’. We challenge students and teachers to set their sights high and avoid settling for mediocrity or being ‘just good rather than great’.

• Excellence in teaching and learning is a core focus every school day. A Contemporary Learning Framework guides teachers as they build a culture of learning. Teachers work in Professional Learning Teams to continually improve what is taught and how it is taught.

• Partnership with parents is valued. Teachers are in ‘loco parentis,’ that is, in place of parents while students are at school. Teachers are committed to working closely with parents to help children achieve their personal best.

• High standards are valued in every aspect of school life – in personal behaviour, attendance, punctuality, manners, uniform, application to school work, homework and assessment tasks.

• Choice in HSC pathways enables senior students to focus on their strengths. In Years 11 and 12 students may choose either an academic pathway available at both MacKillop Senior College and St Joseph’s Regional College or a vocational pathway available at Newman Senior Technical College.

• Outstanding results are achieved by students selecting both pathways. In 2013, 27 students achieved an ATAR of 90 plus and nominations were received in ArtExpress, OnStage, Encore, Callback and InTech. Achievements in the vocational pathway were equally pleasing with Newman students achieving 13 medals at World Skills Regional Finals and 59 students gaining apprenticeships and traineeships.

• Collaboration and teamwork are keys to the success of our local Catholic secondary schools. Overall coordination of the secondary endeavour under the leadership of a Coordinating Principal ensures equality of opportunity and standards across all schools.

• Building community and quality relationships are central to our mission as Catholic schools.

• Witness to our Christian values and beliefs is a special focus for 2014.

We are also fortunate to have excellent school facilities. Our Parish has invested millions of dollars into developing state-of-the-art facilities and great learning environments giving our youth every opportunity to develop their full potential.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

ASH WEDNESDAY CEREMONY AND THE LAUNCH OF PROJECT COMPASSION Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the forty days of Lent leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter. Lent is a special time of preparation in the Church Year, for it is a time for us to ‘Stop, Listen and Reflect” on whom we are and on who God calls us to become. It is a time to admit we are not perfect and can improve in our relationship with God and each other. During the liturgy ashes were placed on our foreheads to signify our belief that God can bring hope, peace and love where there is none. When placed on the forehead, the distributor of ashes said, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” to which we responded, “Amen” This Rite in the church reminds us of our own human frailty and the need for to place our faith in God to assist us in life’s journey. I would like to acknowledge Mr Bruce Smith, Leader of Pastoral Care for putting together such a meaningful liturgy and to Mr Matt Cato who led the service. Congratulations to our College Captains Shaun Hinton and Lisa Fraser, Vice Captains Jaimie Lightfoot and Britney Avery, Senior Leaders, Jessica Horsburgh, Lelani Gobius, Galina Betzis and Sam Turner, along with Year 12 students Hayden Hollis, Maddison Caughlan, Sam Burridge, Tahnee Borg, Erin Badewitz, Mitchell Burley, Emily Ustariz, Olivia Ustariz, Eliska Marczan, Josephine Pepper & Jonti Groth who either spoke throughout the liturgy or assisted in the distribution of the ashes. Also aiding in the distribution of the ashes were teaching staff Mr Gordon West, Mr Phil Shelley, Mrs Tracy Pares and Mrs Kellie Croft. To Mr Andrew Blackmore and Luke Bowles thank you for your performance of the song Lanterns. Thank you to St Joseph’s Regional College students who were so reverent and respectful throughout the liturgy, entering and exiting in silence to Gregorian Chant Music. The creativity and imagination required to organise this liturgy is a credit to those involved.

Lenten Prayer

Almighty and Everlasting God, You have given the human race Jesus Christ our Saviour as a model of humility. He fulfilled your will by becoming man and giving his life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to you by following his example of suffering and make us worthy to share in his resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son. Amen.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Compulsory School Attendance - Information for Parents A reminder from last week…. All children from six years of age and under the minimum school leaving age of 17 years are legally required to attend school.

All New South Wales students must complete Year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17 years of age students must be in a school or registered for home schooling, or full-time in

− further education and training (e.g. TAFE, traineeship, apprenticeship); − full-time, paid employment of an average 25 hours per week; or − a combination of both of the above.

Did you know, that if a student misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary school they will have missed over a year of education?

Must I send my child every day? YES.

Children are expected to attend all school activities, on time. Regular attendance − helps your child develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities − helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine − ensures your child can make and keep friendships.

What if my child has to stay away from school? If your child has to be absent from school, you must tell the school and provide a reason for your child’s absence. To explain an absence parents and carers may

− send a note, fax or email to the school, or − telephone the school, or − visit the school.

A small number of absences may be accepted by the principal. For example, if your child has to − go to a special religious ceremony − is required to attend to a serious and/or urgent family situation (e.g. a funeral) − is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness.

Absences of 10 days or more If a student is to be away for a period of 10 days or more (e.g. surgery, holiday, student exchange) parents must complete an ”Application for Exemption from Attendance at School” form which is available from the school. The Principal will consider your application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Attendance at School’. Principals can grant exemptions from school attendance for 100 days or less in a 12 month period. However if the request for absence from school is over 101 days the application must go through the Catholic Schools Office to the Minister. Parents intending to seek an exemption must give the Principal at least a full term’s notice of the request. What are school Principals responsible for? Principals help to ensure the safety, welfare and wellbeing of your child. Principals have to keep accurate records of student attendance and the reasons for any absences. Principals are responsible for accepting or not accepting a parent’s explanations for their child’s absences. Principals can request medical certificates or other documentation for long or frequent absences even where they are explained by parents as being due to illness. When absences are unexplained by parents, or the explanations are not accepted by the principal, schools work together with parents to help address the issue. The main aim is to sort out what is preventing the child from getting to school and putting strategies in place to help. Sometimes, the school will ask regional support staff and other agencies to assist.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION

Project Compassion “When people work together remarkable things happen!” This week as part of our Ash Wednesday service our community service representatives collected their Project Compassion boxes for their Pastoral Care class. This is the beginning of a variety of activities that will take place during the season of Lent that will highlight the needs of others and how we can assist by donating to Project Compassion. It can sometimes seem that the problem of poverty in the world is simply too big for anyone to solve. Yet this is what the Gospel calls on us to do: to help those in need. And the truth is; if we all work together extraordinary change can happen. Mrs Gilbert and her class have set up a wonderful display in the canteen that shows just how far our contribution can go towards making a better future for communities around the world. There are also stories on the Project Compassion website that describe how money is used to build a more just and fair world. Visit the web site and have a look! www.caritas.org.au Vinnies Leadership Training There were 50 senior students who attended a leadership training program this week. This two hour orientation will assist them in their work with under privileged children in our local area. Later in the year we have Buddy Days which are opportunities to provide young children with a day of activities. There are also kid’s camps during the holidays as well. On a weekly basis, we also have students assisting with homework programs at McCosker House, afternoon programs at the local Aboriginal land council and students volunteering at the Vinnies shop. Congratulations to all students who attended and are so willing to give their time for others. Year 7 Reflection Day Today all Year 7 students will be attending a reflection day at St Agnes Parish Church and the Hub. This is an important addition to the Religious Education program which has been focusing on the college and church community. There will be guest speakers from the parish who will be sharing the ministry they are involved with in the parish. Thank you to Miss Sonia West and Mrs Helen Gilbert who coordinated the day’s activities along with the Year 7 teachers. Parents please mark Tuesday April 8th on your calendar. The Year 7 students and families are invited to a prayer service from 6:30pm - 7:30pm at St Agnes’ Church. The Year 7 students will be involved in the planning, preparation and participation of this evening which concludes this first unit of study in the Religious Education program. Youth Mass Last Sunday, nine musicians from our College presented the music for Sunday’s Youth Mass at St Agnes Church. Thank you to Kerry Jones, Alana Thompson, Keiran Rodgers, Jadeine Quayle, Tom Jones, Eloise Pepper, James Lambert, Harrison Nyberg and Robert Walker. Also to Mr Blackmoore, Alex Small, Eamonn Shannon and Jacob Corbet. Ms Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation
