COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

SOCIAL MEDIA: FACING THE CHALLENGE In terms of human history, mass communication is a relatively recent phenomenon. The printing press was only developed in the 15th Century and changed the whole world at that time. Commercial radio was developed in the early 1900’s and television only became widely available after 1950. In the last twenty years we have seen massive developments in our ability to access new forms of social media. This technology is neither good nor bad in itself. Much of it can be inspiring and uplifting and can be a source of social cohesion and community building. It can also be a source of pain, confusion uncertainty and exclusion. As parents and educators we have to make a choice either to:

• Embrace these new technologies and educate young people to use them for their own welfare and benefit; or

• Avoid access to these new technologies. Given the proliferation of social media, avoidance is hardly a long term strategy. A much more common sense approach is to focus on educating our young people in their appropriate use. We face the huge challenge of transforming this new technology by bringing the values of the Gospel into the world of social media. This is in fact the expectation of the Church which is spelt out in the document “The Catholic School”. “….the school proper is an active force through the systematic formation of the pupils’ faculties to bring them to a measure of self-control and the ability to choose freely and conscientiously in the face of what is offered by the organs of social communication. They must be taught to subject these things to a critical and personal analysis, take what is good and integrate it into their Christian human culture”. Easier said than done, but that is the challenge we face as parents and educators. Our belief is that the human person is intrinsically good, has the ability to know good from evil, the capacity to choose what is good in life and in social media and to leave what is ‘not good’ or destructive. That is the challenge!

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Year 12 Retreats Last week, Year 12 students attended retreats at Camp Elim and Valla Beach. By all accounts the retreats were a tremendously valuable and worthwhile experience. Thank you to Ms Nora Swain, Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation, Mrs Helen Gilbert, Assistant Leader of Evangelisation, Mr Gordon West and Mr Sean Jennings (pictured) who facilitated the retreats along with other staff who all have worked tirelessly and took time away from their own families. We are fortunate that our theme of ‘Witness” is lived daily by our dedicated teachers.

New Leadership Roles for the Remainder of the Term On behalf of the College community I would like to congratulate the following staff members who will be filling new leadership roles for the remainder of Term 2. Mr Chris Kalchbauer will fill the role of Assistant Principal during Mrs Cath Eichmann’s Long Service Leave; Mr Adrian Ryan will carry out the role of Leader of Administration and Mrs Tanya Daley will join the Pastoral Team as Coordinator of Flinders House. We wish all of these staff members the very best in their leadership role and additionally wish Cath Eichmann a very restful break during her LSL. I would also like to thank the casual teachers for their fantastic work this term, particularly those who have done blocks of time for permanent staff on Long Service Leave. Principal’s Reference Year 12 students are currently working with Mr Bruce Smith and Mrs Helene Golding on their Principal’s Reference applications. The Principal’s Reference is a very good resource for assisting students in gaining scholarships for universities and residential colleges, gap year and future employment, and, most importantly, encapsulating and affirming one’s overall commitment to the St Joseph’s Regional College community. Interviews with Year 12 students who have completed their online applications Via Moodle and sought two staff referee statements (which are incorporated into the reference, will commence with me next week. While it is not compulsory for Year 12 students to go through this process, I would strongly encourage them to do so. Applications for the Principal’s Reference close at the conclusion of this term. This early deadline is necessary given the considerable amount of time it takes to write these references. I would ask that you please encourage and remind our students of their ability to avail this aspect of College life.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION

Year 12 Retreat “Memories to Cherish” I would like to thank the Year 12 students and the teachers who attended our retreat last week. It really is a special time for students and teachers to share together. I reminded students that throughout their lives they need to plan their own times of retreat so that they can reflect on where they are in terms of self, relationships, family and spirituality. A special thanks to our ministry trainees who also assisted and brought the example of great witness to our students. Below are some student reflections:

• Retreat has been the best experience in all my years at school. Amazing!

• Our journeys are made one step at a time, but with the love and support of friends, teachers and God, the path becomes less treacherous.

• A great time to reflect, renew, and re-evaluate the relationships we have in our lives.

• Retreat had such a profound impact on how I treat others and myself. I learned to accept the way I am and learned to accept the differences of others.

• It was an experience I will always remember-connecting with classmates and finding a lost faith.

• The retreat renewed my faith in God, friendships and who I am as a person. A real eye opener! I will treasure this time forever.

Vinnies Winter Appeal This term the focus of our community service within the College is to increase donations to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. We are encouraging students to donate, blanket, gloves, beanies, ugg boots, jumpers, socks or any items of warm clothing in good condition. Items can be brought in and left with PC teachers. Gardening With Soul - movie opportunity Gardening With Soul is a wonderful movie opportunity. The film documents the love, and wisdom of a New Zealand nun Sister Loyola Galvin – who also happens to be a well-respected gardener! The movie begins in Port Macquarie on May 29th. Following is a link to view the great trailer. http://www.gardeningwithsoulau.squarespace.com/ Ms Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF CURRICULUM Year 7-10 exams commence Monday, 2nd June (week 6) students have been given their exam timetable this week. Students are also able to access their study guides and exam timetables on the College Moodle page. Students should now be doing regular revision, practice questions in preparation for the upcoming exams. Change of Report Descriptors In Week 1 of Term 3, students in Years 7-10 will be receiving their Semester One reports. As part of the Colleges’ ongoing commitment to excellence in education and the effective feedback to parents on their child’s academic progress, the approaches to Learning descriptors have been modified to be more reflectively of the students’ performance and progress in class. Fee Reminder- All families should have now received their College statement via post. Please contact the office if you have not received your statement. Thank you for the prompt way the good majority of families have responded to paying the College Statement of fees. These funds assist the College considerably in delivering a first class education to your sons and daughters. As you are aware, Term 2 marks the examination and reporting cycle at St Joseph’s Regional College. In this context I am aware that it is College policy not to distribute reports to families with outstanding accounts. As it is early in the term, I would ask that all accounts are paid by 6th June so as to avoid any embarrassing moments. In addition, I would also encourage families who may have difficulties in meeting accounts to contact me to discuss alternative arrangements. Hopefully, following this process will ensure that all students receive their school reports on the designated distribution date. Reports will be distributed in Week 1 of Term 3 on the 18th July. The procedure for issuing reports requests that students share their results with their parents. Hence, report envelopes will be issued to all students with the following message on the front and on the seal: This report envelope is sealed and to be opened only by a Parent or Guardian. I would also like to inform families who pay their account by BPay, that the College is unable to allocate your payment to a particular item. Our data system will only tag the oldest outstanding amount. If you would like a particular item paid, cheque or cash paid via the College front office is the best option in this case. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the genuine sacrifices that all families make to send your sons and daughters to St Joseph’s Regional College. It is, indeed, a tremendous College and your financial contributions ultimately ensure that we can offer the best education outcomes for them.

COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION NEWS

WALKATHON – 8th August 2014

This year’s Walkathon will be held on Friday, 8th August 2014 and is a major fundraising event for the College, giving students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and next week will be given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Mr Chris Kalchbauer at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

SCIENCE NEWS Year Seven students compared the food colourings in M&M's and Smarties in Science this week using a procedure called paper chromatography. This works because different colourings dissolve differently in water and will "crawl" up a piece of blotting paper. Filters from old coffee dripolators work well too. A fun and delicious lab exercise was had by all.

RAW CHALLENGE On the 24th of May SJRC's toughest teachers and students took on the Everest, that was, the 'RAW Challenge'. An 8km adventure course with 30 obstacles at the Barrington tops. The race was an opportunity for senior students to see if the weeks of hard work during Wednesday morning bootcamps had paid off. The hot and humid conditions made the mud baths and dam crossings somewhat appealing and the many rope and wall climbs certainly separated the teachers from the students. Two hours later and we were left with muddy faces, sore legs and sense of satisfaction and achievement. Check out the photos on the College facebook site. Thank you to Mr Kelly for getting us organised for the event and to Mr Cannon for driving us there. See you all on Wednesdays at 7:00am Bootcamp in preparation for 2015.
