Prayer
Matthew 7:7-8
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find: knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."
Talk to God and listen.
Prayer
Prayer is our natural response to God’s love.
How do you define prayer? I like:
In prayer we enter into a dialog with the Lord. We both listen to the Spirit and speak our own heartfelt prayers of Adoration,ContritionThanksgiving and Supplication.
Note the acronym: ACTS
Actively speakthen listen.
Jesus is our model in prayer.
Luke reported how Jesus prayed.
He prayed every Sabbath in the synagogueand at various Jewish religious festivals. He prayed in the morning, at noon and in the evening. He prayed before and after His meals.
Jesus is our Model
He prayed all night before
selecting His apostles.
He prayed the night before His
Passion.
He is our model in prayer as
He is in many things.
How does Jesus teach us to pray?
Prayer
How does Jesus teach us to pray?
First, He calls us to reconciliation with our brothers and
sisters.
"When you stand in prayer, forgive anyone against whom
you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in
turn forgive you your transgressions." (Mark 11:25)
Prayer
He said, pray with child like simplicity
and faith:
“If you then, evil as you are, know how
to give your children what is good, how
much more will the heavenly Father give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
(Luke 11:13)
Prayer
Jesus also teaches that we should persist in prayer.
Persistent Prayer
• Honduras CRHP/Welcome
Prayer
Jesus teaches us to pray with humility and sincerity.
From Luke 18:9-14:
"He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and disposed everyone else. 'Two people went up to the temple area to pray…’ ”
Prayer
Pray with attention to presence and future coming.
From Luke 21:34-36:
“Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent…”
Prayer
Pray with a sincere heart that is ready to do God’s will.
From Matthew 7:21:
“Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Prayer
Jesus teaches us to pray in His name.
From John 14:13
“And ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorifiwhatever you ed in the Son.”
Prayer
And finally when you pray to Jesus, He hears your prayers and answers.
The famous Jesus prayer is excellent:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”
After the break Kevin will present the Lord’s Prayer.I love the Lord’s Prayer…

This is Our Faith: Chapter 24, pages 337-344
Praying the Our Father, knowing all he has done for us, and achieving the
strength we desire to be his servant with Love, is personal to each one of us.
In Jesus' on words on the Sermon on the Mount; the message of Jesus is
one of humility, charity, and brotherly love with the Beatitudes. He teaches
transformation of the inner person, and love becomes the motivation. St.
Francis’ Prayer was for the strength to achieve the gift of love by his prayer.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven."
Gospel of St. Matthew 5:3-10
10 Commandments
I am the Lord your God, you
shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.
You shall not take the name of
the Lord your God in vain.
Remember to keep holy the
Sabbath.
Love the Lord your God with all
your whole heart and with all
your soul and with all your mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
(Matthew 22: 37-40)
2 Greatest Commandments
St. Teresa of Avila
Approach prayer with a humble
heart and full of Love to the Father.
Before this prayer God was
referenced as, “I AM”.
You received the Spirit of adoption,
through which we cry, “Abba,
Father”. (Romans 8:15)
In spite of the division among
Christians, this prayer to “our”
Father remains our common
patrimony. (CCC2791)
Jesus not only gives us the
words of our prayer, at the same
time He gives us the Spirit by
whom these words become in
us, “spirit and life.” (John 6:63,
CCC2766)
Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name
Thy Kingdom Come
Thy Will be done on
Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our
daily bread
Forgive us our
trespasses
Lead us not into
temptation
Deliver us from evil
When we pray - we pray
“Our” (not my) Father, in
solidarity with the whole
Church. We are of one
body, we are in the
communion of God and
men. (CCC2790)
We pray with all the
saints and angels, the
“Great Cloud of
Witnesses”. (Hebrews
12:1)
The expression “God the Father” had
never been revealed to anyone before.
Jesus used “Father” consistently and
Jesus, “The Word of God”, knew the right
words.
“And the word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as of the
Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth”. (John 1:14)
Thus through Jesus - God is our Father.
To call him Father, says we accept being
His child, and behave as His child, and
love our earthly father, to understand
how to love our Heavenly Father.
Thus Jesus is the perfect mirror of our
Father: loving, strong, patient, kind,
forgiving, and tender.
The biblical expression means
majestic, and he transcends
everything we can conceive.
CCC 2794
Heaven is a real place, it is our
home and Jesus is preparing a
place there especially for us.
(John 14:2-3)
If we can only imagine these first
6 thoughts in the prayer and how
much they mean:
Majestic
Holy
Wonderful
Emmanuel
Loving but stern
Forgiving and All-knowing
Hallowed means to “make
holy” and “holy” means set-
apart, sacred, special,
superior, worthy of worship.
We don’t make Him holy, but
His name becomes holy to
others, by us becoming
saints, as they cannot see
God, except through us.
Adoration - a time with Him
to light our fire within us for
Him, and let Him shine.
They cannot see our
faith except through our
works. (James 2:18)
Adoration enables us to
love him, adore him,
and turn our attention to
the God who is perfect
beauty, letting his light
shine into our darkness.
We stand facing the
light, because He
deserves our love.
“Thy Kingdom Come” refers primarily to the final coming of
the reign of God through Christ's return. But there is a
mission in this present world, this desire to commit ourselves
to it all the more strongly. (CCC 2818)
When asked why Jesus died – “to save us.”
When asked why Jesus lived?
“But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter: “You are the
Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:15-16)
“Peter upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of
the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the
keys to the kingdom of heaven...” (Matthew 16:18-19)
Jesus was setting up the new Kingdom on earth as it is in
heaven.
The key to the fulfillment of Thy Kingdom Come, is the fulfillment of
the “thy will be done”. We cannot achieve the kingdom without
reaching out to meet His will.
This is one of the easiest things in the world to understand, but the
hardest to fulfill. C.S. Lewis: “There are only two kinds of people in
the end, those who say to God, “Thy will be done”; and those to
whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.”
Sin is an absolute rebellion against God’s will.
God’s will: Two greatest commandments.
When God’s will is done on earth, we get a glimpse of heaven.
God’s will is both submissive and active - we submit to His will and
we reach out to love our neighbors, feed the poor, and so much more
- all with love.
Mother Teresa: “If you give - give with love, not with pity.”
The shortest prayer that gives God full
control of what we really need.
Does God have the wisdom, knowledge,
and love to answer this prayer?
His will is not always easy.
We must believe it will be answered, as He
promises He will answer the prayer to meet
our needs, not our wants.
What is our greatest need? Christ
“Man does not live on bread alone, but by
every word that proceeds from the mouth
of God.” (Matt 4:4)
Notice the prayer is for today only.
References spiritual food, wisdom, and the
Eucharist, The Body of Christ.
“Whoever eats this flesh, and drinks my
blood remains in me and I in him. This is
the bread that came down from heaven.”
(John 6:56)
“The words I have spoken to you are spirit
and life.” (John 6:63)
This petition is joined by one word “as”.
(CCC 2838)
Christ is commanding us to pray for our
own judgment based on our forgiveness to
others. We set the end result.
Is it impossible for us to receive God’s
forgiveness if we do not forgive others? It is
a choice of the loving heart, or cold heart.
Forgiveness allows love to overcome hurt,
and bears witness that in our world, love is
stronger than sin. (CC2846)
Jesus dying on the cross, sees his Mom,
Roman solders, Jews, and two of his
disciples, as the others have fled, is in
extreme pain, broken heart, and He says,
“Forgive them for they know not what they
are doing.”
He gave the extreme example of love.
Temptation = Trials
Request is tied to the preceding
forgiveness - Greek word “lead”
means both: “do not allow us to
enter into temptation, and do not
let us yield to temptation”.
We humbly confess our
weaknesses, and ask God to be
gentle to us as promised.
God is faithful and will not let you
be tempted beyond your strength.
(1 Cor 10:13)
In Christianity deliverance is not
an abstraction.
Deliverer is the Savior who died
for us on the cross to save us.
Evil refers to a person “Satan”, the
Evil One, the angel who opposes
God. (CC2851)
This is our last petition. “God help
us” to overcome the worldly
desires, and the corruption of sin
and death, and the evil desires of
the present, past and future.
We are promised deliverance!!
This was Christ's last petition; we tend to put our needs first, but Christ teaches us to humbly
love the Father, care for his people first, and do His will; and He will deliver us from the evil of
this world. Christ himself ended with the Cross to defeat evil.
Connecting with our Lord with a
penitent, loving, humble heart
Our Father who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be
done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who
trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation and
deliver us from evil.

“For the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory
are yours now and forever.”
'Lord, has the time come for you to restore the kingdom to Israel?'7 He replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by
his own authority,8 but you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit which will come on you, and then
you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to earth's remotest end.'
Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. Amen.
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
