What is the Assump on of Mary? The Assump on of Mary is the teaching that:, “The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory” [Pius XII, Munificen ssimus Deus 44].

Does that mean it is an “ex cathedra” statement and that we have to believe it? Yes. Since it is a dogma defined by the pope (rather than by an ecumenical council, for example), it is also an “ex cathedra” statement (one delivered “from the chair” of Peter). Because it is infallibly defined, it calls for the defini ve assent of the faithful. Pope John Paul II explained, “The defini on of the dogma, in conformity with the universal faith of the People of God, defini vely excludes every doubt and calls for the express assent of all Chris ans” [General Audience, July 2, 1997].Note that all infallibly defined teachings are things we are obliged to believe, even if they aren’t defined “ex cathedra” (by the pope ac ng on his own). The bishops of the world teaching in union with the pope (either in an ecumenical council or otherwise) can also infallibly define ma ers, but these aren’t called “ex cathedra” since that term refers specifically to the exercise of the pope’s authority as the successor of St. Peter. (It’s Peter’s cathedra or “chair” that symbolizes the pope’s authority.)

Why should Mary die if she was free from Original Sin and its stain? Being free of Original Sin and its stain is not the same thing as being in a glorified, deathless condi on. Jesus was also free of Original Sin and its stain, but he could—and did—die. Expressing a common view among theologians, Ludwig O writes, “For Mary, death, in consequence of her freedom from original sin and from personal sin, was not a consequence of punishment of sin. However, it seems fi ng that Mary’s body, which was by nature mortal, should be, in conformity with that of her Divine Son, subject to the general law of death.”

What are the earliest surviving references to Mary’s Assump on? John Paul II noted, “The first trace of belief in the Virgin's Assump on can be found in the apocryphal accounts en tled Transitus Mariae [La n, “The Crossing Over of Mary”], whose origin dates to the second and third centuries.” These are popular and some mes roman cized depic ons, which in this case, however, pick up an intui on of faith on the part of God's People.

How did the recogni on of Mary’s Assump on develop in the East? John Paul II noted, “There was a long period of growing reflec on on Mary’s des ny in the next world.” This gradually led the faithful to believe in the glorious raising of the Mother of Jesus, in body and soul, and to the ins tu on in the East of the liturgical feasts of the Dormi on [“falling asleep”—i.e., death] and Assump on of Mary.

What Scriptural basis is there for the teaching? John Paul II noted, “Although the New Testament does not explicitly affirm Mary’s Assump on, it offers a basis for it because it strongly emphasized the Blessed Virgin's perfect union with Jesus’ des ny. This union, which is manifested, from the me of the Savior’s miraculous concep on, in the Mother’s par cipa on in her Son’s mission and especially in her associa on with his redemp ve sacrifice, cannot fail to require a con nua on a er death. Perfectly united with the life and saving work of Jesus, Mary shares his heavenly des ny in body and soul.” There are, thus, passages in Scripture that resonate with the Assump on, even though they do not spell it out.

How can we apply this teaching to our everyday lives? According to Pope Benedict XVI: “By contempla ng Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not the defini ve homeland for us either, and that if we live with our gaze fixed on eternal goods we will one day share in this same glory and the earth will become more beau ful. Consequently, we must not lose our serenity and peace even amid the thousands of daily difficul es. The luminous sign of Our Lady taken up into Heaven shines out even more brightly when sad shadows of suffering and violence seem to loom on the horizon. We may be sure of it: from on high, Mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispels the gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassures us with her motherly hand. Supported by awareness of this, let us con nue confidently on our path of Chris an commitment wherever Providence may lead us. Let us forge ahead in our lives under Mary's guidance [General Audience, August 16, 2006].”

FAREWELL FR. JOSEPH August 17th will be Fr. Joseph’s last day of service at St. Louise de Marillac. He will be moving to St. Anthony’s in Gardena for his second assignment within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are very grateful for the service Fr. Joseph provided the St. Louise de Marillac community during the four years he was assigned here. Please keep him in your prayers as he makes this transi on to a new assignment.

While we cannot host a farewell recep on for Father Joseph, we encourage parishioners to send him notes of well wishes. Any farewell cards can be dropped into the offertory basket or in the Parish Office.

While we expect that a new Associate Pastor will be provided to our community, as of right now, we have not received confirma on about who that might be. Please keep this inten on in your asking the Good Lord to provide an addi onal priest to con nue mee ng the many needs of this parish.

Assumption of Mary Prayer

Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise,

for all life and all holiness come from you.

In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to

be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in

reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love

and praise.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A er the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Ma hew 14:33). Most Chris ans will probably never experience such a drama c miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifesta on of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly a uned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the li le things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemna on of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one si ng, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Bap zed on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ ini a on into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta on in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Though 10 years younger than her townsman, Francis of Assisi, Clare was drawn to his radical message of serving God in abject poverty. Despite objec ons from her aristocra c family, who wanted her to marry, she gave up the world with Francis' help and founded the Second Order of St. Francis, known worldwide as the Poor Clares. For 40 years, she guided the San Damiano community, whose nuns included her sister and widowed mother. She served the other nuns who went out to beg, was o en sick because of their hard life, and was proclaimed a saint just two years a er she died. h ps://catholiccurrent.org/saints/saint-clare-of-assisi/

DID YOU KNOW?

Build appropriate social media rela onships

Online rela onships are important, especially for teens and young people. But adults who use social media to connect with the children in their lives need to be sure that they are building appropriate rela onships. Before sending a friend request, consider the “PAN” standard. While used commonly for appropriate real-life touch, in today’s increasingly virtual use, PAN is a good benchmark for online interac ons. Communica ons should be Public, Appropriate, and Non-sexual. For more informa on, request a copy of the VIRTUS ar cle “Before you send a young person a ‘friend request’” at h ps://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/. For more informa on on other ways to keep kids safe, contact Linda Filkins, the Parish Safeguard Commi ee Chairperson at (626) 214-7846 or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office at (213) 637-7227.
