2 A Note from Fr. Marinello
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Peter in today's gospel proclaims an im-portant insight into who
Jesus is and who we are as the Mystical Body of Christ and the
Church. What Jesus is we are called to be because we share in his
saving mission. Church is not something we "go to" once a week, it
is an identity we share as members of the Body of Christ into which
we are initiat-ed at baptism. We make the presence of Christ, the
Son of the living God when we gather at Mass to give God praise and
thanks. We make him known and felt when we reach out to one
an-other in need, forgive those who have wronged us, offer a word
of encour-agement, show mercy and compassion. In all this and much
more we show the identity of the church as rooted in the presence
of Jesus, the living God. This week let us allow the presence of
Jesus to be revealed in the little things we do!
The presence of Jesus is manifested in a vari-ety of ways
especially in our parish ministries. These are really the gifts of
the Spirit working in our midst. One of these gifts is our call to
educate the young. Last week I spoke about the parish school
beginning another aca-demic year and the role of the parish school.
Allow me to highlight another aspect of edu-cation through our
faith formation program - religious education, confirmation, adult
con-firmation, RCIA, and RCIC. We also have op-portunities for
adults to continue to grow in their faith; sharing groups, bible
studies, and adult catechism classes. All these gifts of the
Spirt are manifestations of what we call in the church as
CATECHESIS.
Catechesis is the act of handing on the Word of God intended to
inform the faith commu-nity and candidates for initiation into the
Church about the teachings of Christ, trans-mitted by the Apostles
to the Church. Cat-echesis also involves the lifelong effort of
forming people into witnesses to Christ and opening their hearts to
the spiritual transfor-mation given by the Holy Spirit.
I am encouraging and invit-ing all of us to continue ex-ploring
ways we can grow in the faith. Especially en-couraging our young
fami-lies and young people to grow in the faith. Please know that
we are having registrations for religious ed-ucation and
confirmation.

"Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios vivo." Pedro en el
evangelio de hoy proclama una importante comprensión de quién es
Jesús y quiénes somos como el Cuerpo Místico de Cristo y la
Iglesia. Lo que Jesús dice, es que estamos llamados a compartir su
misión de salvación. La Iglesia no es a donde "vamos" una vez a la
semana, es una identidad que compartimos como miembros del Cuerpo
de Cristo en el cual somos iniciados en el bautis-mo. Hacemos la
presencia de Cristo, el Hijo del Dios vivo, cuando nos reunimos en
Misa para darle alabanza y gracias. Lo hacemos co-nocer y sentir
cuando nos alcanzamos unos a otros en necesidad, perdonamos a los
que nos han ofendido, ofrecemos una palabra de alien-to,
demostramos misericordia y compasión. En todo esto y mucho más
mostramos la identidad de la iglesia como arraigada en la presencia
de Jesús, el Dios vivo. Esta semana dejemos que la presencia de
Jesús sea revelada en las pe-queñas cosas que hacemos! La presencia
de Jesús se manifiesta en una va-riedad de formas, especialmente en
nuestros ministerios parroquiales. Estos son realmente los dones
del Espíritu que obra en nuestro me-dio. Uno de estos regalos es
nuestro llamado a educar a los jóvenes. La semana pasada hablé
sobre la escuela parroquial que comienza otro año académico y el
papel de la escuela parro-quial. Permítanme destacar otro aspecto
de la educación a través de nuestro programa de for-mación de fe -
educación religiosa, confirma-ción, confirmación de adultos, RCIA y
RCIC. También tenemos oportunidades para que los adultos continúen
creciendo en su fe; Compar-tiendo grupos, estudios bíblicos y
clases de ca-
tecismo para adultos. Todos estos dones del Espíritu son
manifestaciones de lo que llama-mos en la iglesia como Catequesis.
La catequesis es el acto de transmitir la Pala-bra de Dios
destinada a informar a la comuni-dad de fe y a los candidatos a la
iniciación en la Iglesia sobre las enseñanzas de Cristo
trans-mitidas por los Apóstoles a la Iglesia. La cate-quesis
también implica el esfuerzo de toda la vida de formar personas en
testigos de Cristo y abrir sus corazones a la transformación
espiri-tual dada por el Espíritu Santo. Estoy alentando e invitando
a todos a conti-nuar descubriendo maneras en que podemos crecer en
la fe. Alentando especialmente a nuestras familias jóvenes a crecer
en la fe. Por favor, sepa que tenemos inscripciones para educación
religiosa y confirmación. ¡Que tengas una semana bendecida!

THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY
August 28,1988 - The new Parish Center opens. For-merly the
Sister’s convent, it was renovated at a cost of $300,000 (the
original convent, built in 1959, and cost $68,000). The center was
now the location for the parish office, clergy offices, a music
room, kitchen, nursery and several meeting rooms. August 30,1993 -
67 parishioners traveled to Ireland and visited Fr. Hegarty’s
grave, 22 years after his death. Mass was celebrated by Msgr.
Sartoris and joined by 150 of his relatives, neighbors and friends.
September 1,1975 - The parish hired the first full-time CCD
(Religious Education) Director, Mrs. Suzanne Pol-lach. September 2,
1977 - Bingo began. Held each Friday in the parish hall, it raised
money for the school. (Bingo was held weekly at the parish for 31
years) September 2, 2001 - The renovation of the church was
completed. For the previous four months, Mass was celebrated in a
large tent in the parish parking lot. September 3, 1961 - It was
announced that there would no longer be a school bus. Students who
ride the City bus will now be given a special half – priced pass
from Sister Superior. September 4, 1973 - The St. Margaret Mary
Bowling team was created

LA JERARQUIA COMO SERVICIO A LA IGLESIA Por Humberto Beltrán
Este evangelio lo leímos hace dos meses en la fiesta de san
Pedro y San Pablo. El evangelio nos cuenta la profesión de fe de
San Pedro que en San Mateo es más solemne que en los otros
evangelio. Tenemos una confesión mutua de Jesús y de Pedro: Pedro
dice quien es Jesús, y Jesús dice quien va a ser Pedro. La gente
veía en Jesús una continuidad con el pasado como uno de los grandes
profetas o uno de los héroes muertos que había vuelto a la vida,
mientras que Pedro vio la originalidad y unicidad de Jesús, el Hijo
de Dios encarnado, que venía a crear una nueva comunidad, un Nuevo
Pueblo de Dios que iba a abrazar a toda la humanidad. Pedro es uno
de aquellos sencillos a los que el Padre ha iluminado. Es el
primero en re-conocer a Jesús, viendo en él algo más profundo que
la apariencia humana. Para un judío que había sido educado en una
fe monoteísta, el confesar que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios era algo
milagroso. Jesús le cambia el nombre a Pedro para indicar que en el
futuro va a tener una nueva personalidad, siendo piedra de apoyo y
sostén para los demás discípulos. Pedro recibe el poder de atar y
desatar, que según la literatura rabíni-ca era el poder interpretar
la Ley, de poner o quitar obligaciones derivadas de la Ley; el
poder excomulgar y de echar demonios. Recibe las lla-ves, teniendo
poder absoluto y confianza en la administración de la Casa de Dios.
Pedro se convierte una especie de Gran Rabino, maestro de la Nueva
Sinagoga/iglesia de los discípulos de Jesús, y portavoz del grupo.
Pedro recibe su misión como respuesta a su fe en Jesús. Siguiendo a
Jesús, Pedro va a guiar a los discípulos y los va a inspirar con su
ejemplo de servicio y con su doctrina de amor. San Juan nos cuenta
que Pedro recibió de Jesús su misión de apacentar el rebaño con
respuesta a su triple confesión de fe después de la
resu-rrección.
El amor y la fe son las dos únicas bases para la autoridad
cristiana. A Jesús cada uno lo veía y lo ve a su modo, hablador,
agitador, pro-
feta, político, revolucionario, médico y milagre-ro. Pero Pedro
lo confiesa como Hijo de Dios. Pedro también era (y lo sigue
haciendo en sus sucesores, los papas) a su veces impulsivo,
dis-puesto a sacar la espada, valiente, cobarde, pero siempre
deseoso de ser fiel a Jesús.
Pedro recibe autoridad para una misión
de servicio. La jerarquía de la iglesia no son las autoridades,
los dignatarios, los príncipes de la iglesia y los administradores,
sino que son ante todo los Buenos Pastores y Servidores de los
siervos de Dios (Sevi Servorum Dei, como decía San Gregorio Magno),
según el modelo y ejem-plo de Jesús. El mundo con sus títulos y
crite-rios, puede contagiar a la iglesia, y puede dis-traerla de la
misión que Jesús le encomienda. La iglesia que Jesús funda sobre
Pedro será in-defectible y permanecerá para siempre; las puertas
(las partes más fortificadas de una ciu-dad) del castillo del
diablo y los poderes del in-fierno están condenados al fracaso. La
iglesia tiene al cielo de su parte; sus decisiones tienen una
dimensión de eternidad. La iglesia será fiel a su Dios y Dios será
fiel a su iglesia.
Reflexión.
La fe es un compromiso personal, res-
ponsable y consciente que debe crear en noso-tros un nuevo
estilo de vida. Para lograr este compromiso personal de nuestra fe,
tal vez nos sea útil preguntarnos una vez más: ¿Y yo que pienso de
Jesús?

parroquia y es muy informativo. Si usted es voluntario en la

de cuatro años, tendrá que tomar la clase. Todos los vo-luntarios
que tengan algún contacto con meno-res deben tomarse las huellas
dactilares. Si está trabajando con menores y no se le han tomado

FAITH FORMATION
Registrations for the Faith Formation pro-gram now open! Please
come in to the Faith Formation of-fice between 2pm and 7pm (Monday
thru Friday), or Sundays 8am to 2pm to join our Parish Faith
Formation sessions. All Faith Formation Programs are a two (2) year
process.
·Elementary Faith Formation is for chil-dren from the 1st
through 6th grades Sessions open for Saturdays from 9:00 am – 10:30
am and Sundays from 8:30 am – 10:30 am (which includes the 9:30 am

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN
All adults who are volunteering in the parish are required to
take a Virtus class called Protec ng God’s children. This is a
three hour class that is offered at the parish and is very in-forma
ve. If you are volunteering in the parish and have not yet taken
the class or you took the class more than four years ago, you will
need to take the class. All volunteers who have any contact with
minors must be fingerprinted. If you are working with minors and
have not been fingerprinted you must do so.
