FFebruary 2, 2020 ~ The Presentation of the Lord
Dear Parishioners: Today is the kickoff – not only of the Super Bowl – but of the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal here in the Archdiocese of New York. Please see the last page
of the bulletin about the importance of this Appeal and all the charitable works of the Archdiocese that it supports, including support of needy parishes and schools, the formation of our Priests, and the vast charitable works of Catholic Charities. You are well aware of all of this and have been so supportive and generous year after year. It really shows the strength of this beautiful parish, and your concern not only for the needs of our own parish, but for the needs of God’s people throughout the wider Church in the Archdiocese of New York and beyond.
Today is also the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs on February 2nd, forty days after Christmas, every year. It used to be the end of the Christmas Season years ago. This beautiful Feast is usually celebrated at daily Mass during the week. It hasn’t fallen on a Sunday since 2014, so we are blessed to be able to celebrate it with our wider Parish family this year. For those who pray the Rosary every day (it would be wonderful if we all did), we contemplate this mystery at least twice a week in the fourth Joyful Mystery. This Feast Day is also traditionally called Candlemas or the “Mass of the Candles.” Candles in the Liturgy always symbolize the Light of Christ. This is why we bless candles at the beginning of Mass today in the back of the Church. At the 9:30 Mass the children process in with lighted candles. This is reminiscent of how we begin the Easter Vigil, with the Church in darkness and the Easter Candle being blessed and lighted and carried in procession as we proclaim, “Christ our Light.”
Indeed, this Feast of the Presentation is intrinsically connected to Easter, the Paschal Mystery – the Suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. Mary and Joseph, obedient to the Law of Moses, bring their baby to the Temple to “Present” Him to God, to consecrate His Life as an offering to the Father. This is precisely why the Son of God took on our flesh and blood - to present it as an offering to God on the Cross for our sins and continues to do so in the Eucharist.
We see a foreshadowing of the Cross in the ominous prophesy of the old man Simeon as he holds the baby Jesus and says to Mary: “This child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign of contradiction – and you yourself a sword will pierce.” This must have troubled Mary greatly. But as always,
Mary pondered this in her heart and never ceased to say to God, “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Mary’s complete offering of herself to the Will of God brought the Light of the World into the darkness of our world. May we, like Mary, offer ourselves totally to God’s Will so that the Light of Christ may continue to shine in the darkness of our world through us and draw many others to that Light. May God bless us all. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey Saturday, February 1 5:00 Major James M.
