~~ January 24, 2021 ~ Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners: Today is Announcement Weekend kicking off this year’s Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship

Appeal here in the Archdiocese of New York. Please see the page in today’s bulletin about the importance of this Appeal and all the charitable works of the Archdiocese that it supports for those in need throughout this vast Archdiocese.

This is a difficult time for everyone, I know. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused so much suffering, loss, and stress in people’s lives. With so much need in our Communities, the charitable works of the Church are needed now more than ever. We can only do the best we can, but please know that whatever you are able to do in these difficult times is so much needed and appreciated. You have been so supportive of and generous to this Appeal year after year. It really shows the strength of this beautiful parish, and your concern not only for the needs of our own parish, but for the needs of God’s people throughout the wider Church in the Archdiocese of New York and beyond.

This year our Parish has been given the goal of raising $171,500 toward this work of the Gospel. Last year we finished with 389 families participating and fell about $30,000 short of our goal, which is fantastic given what a difficult year this has been for all of us. With 2,300 households in our parish, if we can significantly increase the number of households participating, we should be able to meet our goal this year and do a lot of good.

If you have not received a pledge envelope in the mail, you can get one in the back of the Church and either place it in the mail, drop it in the offertory basket at Mass or at the Rectory in the weeks ahead, or you can fill it out online by visiting cardinalsappeal.org. There will also be an opportunity to make a gift during Mass on Commitment Weekend which will be held on March 6th & 7th. And thank you to all who have already participated in this year’s Cardinal’s Appeal.

In today’s Gospel we hear the first words of Jesus as He begins His public ministry: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at Hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel.” The Kingdom of God is at hand because the King, our Lord Jesus Christ, has come into the world. All the Prophets throughout the Old Testament pointed toward His coming and now that He has come everything has to change. Therefore, Jesus says, Repent and believe in

the Gospel. That is change, change the way you think, change the way you see things, change the way you live.

Saint Paul in our Second Reading today speaks of what this change looks like in a person who has truly repented and come to believe in the Gospel. Saint Paul speaks of living a God-centered and not a self-centered life. Everything in this world, Saint Paul says, is passing away. That is why Saint Paul could say throughout his writings that whether he lives or dies, whether he is rich or poor, whether he is healthy or sick, it doesn’t really matter as long as he is doing the Will of God. As I heard one preacher put it: If I am rich let my wealth serve the Lord, if I am poor let my poverty serve the Lord, if I am healthy let my health serve the Lord, if I am sick let my suffering serve the Lord.

This is the attitude of a person of real faith. Such a person is truly free and at peace, and is an instrument of that peace to others. May God bless us all.

Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey

“Year of St. Joseph” “Unnoticed Worker” Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen

To our parishioners:

Unfortunately, this year our Christmas envelopes arrived close to New Year’s Day. To date, we have received less than half of the amount we normally receive at Christmas. If you have not yet contributed and would like to, please put your Christmas envelope in the weekend collection, or mail it to us, or use our online giving through “We Share” at https://stmartindeporres.churchgiving.com

Thanks so much for your generous support of our parish.
